Pedagogical Thoughts on Album des Six: a piano set by Les Six to represent French Nationalism

    Get PDF
Les Six, formally established in 1920, included a group of young French composers: Georges Auric (1899-1983), Louis Durey (1888-1979), Arthur Honegger (1892-1955), Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) and Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983). The primary motivation for their formation was the reaction against foreign influences, especially German Romantic music, in French music. Jean Cocteau, inspired by Erik Satie’s style, proposed a new French musical aesthetic: simplicity, directness, clarity, and terseness. Les Six followed these ideals in their formative years. Their artistic association was short-lived, but while it lasted it produced Album des Six, their sole joint production, a published six-piece piano set, in 1920. The works in the Album were primarily composed as independent pieces between 1914 and 1920, and were deliberately assembled to symbolize Les Six as a coherent group in 1920. However, the group was never cohesive. Durey’s refusal to contribute music for Les mariés de la tour Eiffel, Cocteau’s ballet, in 1921 began the disintegration of their association. This treatise examines Album des Six from a pedagogical perspective. Album des Six not only demonstrates the youthful styles of the composers, but also offers an engaging and effective pedagogical work. While furthering a Cocteau-Satie vision of nationalism, this set also reflects its composers’ appreciation of the achievement of other then prominent Parisian composers such as Debussy and Stravinsky. This variety of influences demonstrates the richness of this concise collection. The central component of this treatise is the discussion of Album des Six in chapter 3. In order to establish the groundwork for the discussion, this treatise briefly synthesizes the following components: Erik Satie and his piano works; Parisian cultural atmosphere; the Cocteau-Satie association and Cocteau’s manifesto. The treatise concludes by highlighting important elements of the Satie-Cocteau aesthetics in the Album

Agrarian Future(s) of Rural Nepal: Revitalizing Peasant Agriculture?

    Get PDF
Discourses on peasant agriculture have heightened in the context of recurrent food crisis and persistent poverty in Nepal as in many parts of the global South. Although an industrialized model of agriculture has been promoted as a pathway to a food-secure future, it has been heavily criticized for being environmentally destructive and socially unbearable. In this broader context, we examine peasant farming to explore enabling factors and barriers for its revitalization in Nepal, where the vast majority of rural people depends on farming for their livelihoods. This research draws on case studies of two agrarian villages characterized mainly by the subsistence nature of farming systems, but with one of them having significant prospects for commercial agriculture. While scholars are increasingly acknowledging peasant agriculture as a viable approach to ensure food security and a sustainable future, this article shows that peasants are unlikely to continue such practices given the local and global challenges created by outmigration of laborers, neoliberal policy of the government, and diminished attraction of farming to young people. We suggest that these challenges should be addressed through reframing agricultural discourse and policy

ByIntroduction: Eyelashes are unique hair follicles normally found at the eyelid margin. The spectrum of cilial anomalies includes cilial row duplication, agenesis and ectopic placement. Ectopic cilia are the rarest of cilial anomalies. Case Report: A 15 years old girl presented with the complaints of eyeache and headache for three months. She also complained of extra lashes over left upper eyelid with secretion of tears while crying from the area of extra lashes. She was a diagnosed case of epilepsy under treatment for three months. On examination, visual acuity was 6/6p in right eye and 6/6p in left eyewith best corrected visual acuity being 6/6 with -0.25DS in both the eyes. The anterior and posterior segment findings were normal except for presence of extra bunch of cilia on the temporal side of the left upper eyelid two mm above the upperlid crease with dimpling of the underlying skin. Conclusion: Ectopic cilia,a rare congenital condition, is asymptomatic and surgical treatment can be done for cosmetic correction
