Female Ramblers and the Reconstruction of Private Space in Jane Eyre, Passing and Girls

    Get PDF
In this paper, focusing on the moments where female ramblers make significant movements in Charlotte Brontës Jane Eyre (1847), Nella Larsens Passing (1929), and Lena Dunhams Girls (2012), I explore the way the texts questions the constraint on female bodies through the window of female rambling and the texts deal with the dynamics embedded in the reconstruction of private space where a female achieves a fresh sense of agency through her experience of rambling or her imaginary rambling. This paper refers to Walter Benjamins notion of the flâneur while revising it, while accepting the view of Virginia Woolfs narrator in A Room of Ones Own where she urges a female writer to do an imaginary rambling to restore the unrecorded histories on the streets. This paper suggests that the movements of female ramblers in the above texts dramatically embody and explore the potentiality embedded in Woolfs notion of imaginary rambling

Effect of Aquatic Exercise on Foot Pressure Balance and Posture Stability in Elderly Women

The purpose was investigate the foot pressure balance and body posture stability in elderly women. Sixteen elderly women participated in this study (mean age:72.63?~79.38?.46yrs, mean BMI: 25.03?.83~27.99?.78). They were divided into two groups (aqua exercise group, n=8, control group, n=8). Participants were tested before and after the study to measure foot pressure balance, body posture stability and advanced balance ability(limits of stability) were measured Biorescure(RM Ingenierie Co, France) which has % quarterly sector(RF, LF, RB, LB). Aqua exercise training program was performed for 50minutes per session, 3times per week for 12weeks. Data was analyzed with ANOVA for repeated measures, t-test using SPSS ver 19.0 program. Aquatic exercise considered a senior citizen fall prevention and improved quality of life

Hyaluronan- and RNA-binding deubiquitinating enzymes of USP17 family members associated with cell viability

BACKGROUND: Protein degradation by the ubiquitin system plays a crucial role in numerous cellular signaling pathways. Deubiquitination, a reversal of ubiquitination, has been recognized as an important regulatory step in the ubiquitin-dependent degradation pathway. RESULTS: While identifying putative ubiquitin specific protease (USP) enzymes that contain a conserved Asp (I) domain in humans, 4 USP17 subfamily members, highly homologous to DUB-3, have been found (USP17K, USP17L, USP17M, and USP17N), from human chorionic villi. Expression analysis showed that USP17 transcripts are highly expressed in the heart, liver, and pancreas and are expressed moderately in various human cancerous cell lines. Amino acid sequence analysis revealed that they contain the highly conserved Cys, His, and Asp domains which are responsible for the deubiquitinating activity. Biochemical enzyme assays indicated that they have deubiquitinating activity. Interestingly, the sequence analysis showed that these proteins, with exception of USP17N, contain the putative hyaluronan/RNA binding motifs, and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC)-precipitation analysis confirmed the association between these proteins and intracellular hyaluronan and RNA. CONCLUSION: Here, we report that the overexpression of these proteins, with exception of USP17N, leads to apoptosis, suggesting that the hyaluronan and RNA binding motifs in these enzymes play an important role in regulating signal transduction involved in cell death

miR-143 Regulation of Prostaglandin-Endoperoxidase Synthase 2 in the Amnion: Implications for Human Parturition at Term

    Get PDF
The human amnion plays a pivotal role in parturition. Two of its compartments, the placental amnion and the reflected amnion, have distinct transcriptome and are functionally coordinated for parturition. This study was conducted to determine the microRNA (miRNA) expression pattern and its significance in the placental amnion and the reflected amnion in association with labor at term.<0.05). Luciferase assay and transfection confirmed miR-143 binding to 3′ UTR of prostaglandin-endoperoxidase synthase 2 (PTGS2) mRNA and miR-143 regulation of PTGS2 in AMCs.We report region-specific amniotic microRNAome and miR-143 regulation of PTGS2 in the context of human labor at term for the first time. The findings indicate that miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression machinery in the amnion plays an important role in the compartments (placental amnion vs reflected amnion) and in a cell type-specific manner (AECs vs AMCs) for parturition

Dieulafoy's Lesion of Jejunum: Presenting Small Bowel Mass and Stricture

    Get PDF
Dieulafoy's lesion is an uncommon cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. Hemorrhage occurs through mucosal erosion from an abnormally dilated submucosal artery. Although Dieulafoy's lesion is usually located in the stomach, it may occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. We report here on a case of jejunal Dieulafoy's lesion presenting as a mass and short segment stricture on CT and enteroclysis

Rehabilitation of edentulous maxilla with implant-supported milled bar overdenture using CAD/CAM customized abutment: A case report

    Get PDF
In patients with fully edentulous maxilla, fabrication of implant-supported overdenture can be a viable treatment option, when a minimum of six implants were strategically placed. Among several attachment systems used for implant-supported overdentures, milled-bars prevent rotational movement of denture, thus showing great stability, and have the advantage of splinting multiple implants with each other. In this case report, a milled-bar supported overdenture was fabricated for a patient suffering from condition of fully edentulous maxilla with severe ridge resorption in the anterior residual ridge. Seven implants composed of three different systems were effectively utilized by CAD/CAM customized abutment and cement-retained milled bar.ope
