    Breaking up with my idol: A qualitative study of the psychological adaptation process of renouncing fanship

    Introduction:This study aimed to explore the psychological adaptation process of renouncing fanship due to para-loveshock in the context of fandom culture.MethodsWe adopted netnography to explore social media platforms used by fans in China (Weibo, WeChat, and Douban) as research fields for 3 years.Results(1) The process of “breaking up with” or renouncing an idol can be divided into three phases: the resistance phase with acute stress, the negotiation phase with bargaining, and the recovery phase with attachment reconstruction. In the resistance phase, fans displayed acute stress responses due to loveshock in psychological, physical, and behavioral aspects. In the negotiation phase, fans faced four barriers to renouncement: cognitive dissonance, emotional attachment, behavioral dependence, and social threat. They bargained within the three types of cognitive framework before deciding to “leave” or “re-follow” their idol. In the recovery phase, fans adopted two types of strategies to promote recovery: healing the past and facing the future. Healing the past involved public outcry, sharing their breakup plans, cognitive reconstruction, and seeking closure to the fan role. Facing the future involved switching environments, seeking new interests, and inhibiting the re-intrusion of trauma cues. (2) Internal factors affecting the psychological adaptation process of renouncement include the level of initiative, attribution styles, experience, attachment status and core belief systems, and alternative lifestyles; external factors include social support, peer pressure from the fan community, life stressors, and types and impact of traumatic events. (3) Based on the two dimensions of orientation and commitment, fans were classified into four types: short-term rational, short-term passionate, bounded loyal, and unconditionally loyal, corresponding to non-traumatic, stressful, accumulated, and traumatic breakup processes, respectively. (4) The post-renouncement growth of fans mainly manifested in the development of mental modes, coping skills toward trauma, emotional adaptation experience, and behavior patterns.ImplicationsThis investigation of the recovery process from para-loveshock after renouncement of fanship can provide theoretical and practical insights into the development of psychological resilience for fans, reduction of the psychological distress and negative outcomes, and public governance on social media platform and cyber pop culture industry

    Associations between Benign Cutaneous Nevi and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Men and Women: Results from Two Prospective Cohort Studies

    poster abstractABSTRACT Objective: Previous studies suggest that the number of cutaneous nevi and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are both associated with endogenous sex hormone levels. However, no prospective studies have specifically examined the relationship between the number of benign cutaneous nevi and T2DM. Research Design and Methods: We prospectively examined the associations between the number of nevi and risk of T2DM among 23,748 men (1986-2010) from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) and 67,050 women (1989-2010) from the Nurses' Health Study (NHS). Information on the numbers of melanocytic nevi on arms and the incidence of T2DM was collected by validated questionnaires. Results: During 1,831,118 person-years of follow-up, we documented 8748 incident cases of T2DM. After adjustment for age, BMI, and other diabetes risk factors, the number of nevi was significantly associated with increased risk of T2DM. Multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) for <1, 1-5, 6-14, and ≥15 nevi were 1.00 (reference), 1.02 (0.92, 1.14), 1.10 (0.87, 1.38), and 1.70 (1.22, 2.36), respectively, for men (P trend = 0.03) and 1.00 (reference), 1.15 (1.09, 1.21), 1.25 (1.11, 1.40), and 1.70 (1.38, 2.09), respectively, for women (P trend = 0.019). This positive association remained consistent across subgroups of participants. Conclusions: Mole count may represent a novel marker for development of T2DM in men and women, indicating a unique nevus development-related mechanism, possibly due to altered levels or functions of endogenous steroid sex hormones, in the pathogenesis of T2DM. Further studies are warranted to clarify the relationship of nevogenesis and T2DM and underlying mechanisms

    Change in Ubiquitin Proteasome System of Grass Carp Ctenopharyngodon idellus Reared in the Different Stocking Densities

    The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) is a highly regulated mechanism of intracellular protein degradation and turnover. To evaluate the effect of crowding stress on the UPS in fish, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) were randomly reared at low stocking density (LSD, 0.9 kg m−2) or high stocking density (HSD, 5.9 kg m−2) for 70 days. The expression of the genes regulating UPS, stress-related parameters, and profiles of amino acid in white muscle as well as growth rate of fish reared at two stocking densities were investigated. Fish exhibited significantly higher growth rate in the LSD group compared to the HSD group. Serum concentrations of cortisol, total protein, and glucose did not vary significantly in fish between two groups. There was no significant difference in the mRNA levels of nrf2, keap1, and hsp90 in white muscle of fish stocked at two densities at the endpoint of the experiment. In the UPS pathway, the expressions of ub, chip, psmc1 in the LSD group were significantly higher than those in the HSD group (P &lt; 0.05). Ubiquitinated protein level and the content of 3-Methylhistidine elevated significantly in the LSD group (P &lt; 0.05). The mRNA levels of mafbx, murf1, and s6k1 in the LSD group were significantly higher than those in HSD group (P &lt; 0.05). These results illustrate that the fish cultured in lower stocking density would exhibit a greater growth rate and a fast protein turnover in muscle

    A review of possible mechanisms for mercury migration in diagenesis: Clay to pyrite

    Though sedimentary mercury in marine sediments has been regarded as a geological indicator of volcanic activity based on volcanism activity is the dominant natural source of Hg to the oceans, the influence of diagenesis on mercury cannot be dismissed. Marine mudstone has been selected to explore the migration of mercury from the syn-sedimentary stage to the diagenetic stage in this review. Marine mudstones undergo a series of significant transformation processes, including the illitization of smectite and the formation of framboidal pyrite aggregates during the diagenetic stage. This process makes the adsorption capacity of minerals change significantly that clay minerals are weakened, while pyrites are enhanced. In this reason, it is inferred that the sedimentary mercury may re-migrate from clay minerals to pyrite. This at least means that the indication of volcanic activity by mercury enrichment in marine mudstone need to be re-evaluated

    Long-term intake of gluten and cognitive function among US women

    Importance: Gluten avoidance has been suggested as having a benefit to cognitive health among the general population, given the link between gluten and cognitive impairment in patients with celiac disease. However, data are lacking in individuals without celiac disease. Objective: To examine whether gluten intake is associated with cognitive function in women without celiac disease. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study included US women who participated in the longitudinal, population-based Nurses\u27 Health Study II and had not previously or subsequently been diagnosed with celiac disease. Dietary data were collected from 1991 to 2015, and data on cognitive function were collected from 2014 to 2019. Data analysis was conducted from October 2020 to April 2021. Exposures: Energy-adjusted gluten intake, cumulatively averaged across questionnaire cycles prior to cognitive assessment. Main Outcomes and Measures: Three standardized cognitive scores assessed by the validated Cogstate Brief Battery: (1) psychomotor speed and attention score, (2) learning and working memory score, and (3) global cognition score. Higher scores indicated better performance. Results: The cohort included 13 494 women (mean [SD] age, 60.6 [4.6] years). The mean (SD) gluten intake was 6.3 (1.6) g/d. After controlling for demographic and lifestyle risk factors in linear regression, no significant differences in standardized cognitive scores (mean [SD], 0 [1]) by quintile of gluten intake were found across highest and lowest quintiles of gluten intake (psychomotor speed and attention: -0.02; 95% CI, -0.07 to 0.03; P for trend = .22; learning and working memory: 0.02; 95% CI, -0.03 to 0.07; P for trend = .30; global cognition: -0.002; 95% CI, -0.05 to 0.05; P for trend = .78). The null associations persisted after additional adjustment for major sources of dietary gluten (ie, refined grains or whole grains), comparing decile categories of gluten intake, using gluten intake updated at each previous questionnaire cycle, or modeling changes in gluten intake. Similarly, these associations were not materially altered in sensitivity analyses that excluded women who had reported cancer or dementia diagnosis or had not completed all dietary assessments. Conclusions and Relevance: In this study, long-term gluten intake was not associated with cognitive scores in middle-aged women without celiac disease. Our results do not support recommendations to restrict dietary gluten to maintain cognitive function in the absence of celiac disease or established gluten sensitivity
