Alley farming in the humid zone: Linking crop and livestock production
Review of work being carried out by ILCA's Humid Zone Programme based at Ibadan, Nigeria to improve small ruminant production in this area. Evaluates ways of linking crop & small ruminant production through the use of fast growing leguminous trees such as Leucaena leucocephala & Gliricidia sepium which can provide both high quality fodder & mineral rich mulch for crop production; with particular reference to the cut-and-carry feeding of browse to small ruminants & a partial budget analysis of short-term fallow grazing & continuous cropping
Small ruminant production under pressure: The example of goats in southeast Nigeria
Presents preliminary assessment of animals' performance under a free-roaming and movement-restricted production system and farmers' responses to changed husbandry practices in southeast Nigeria; with particular reference to flock dynamics & male to female ratio; reproductive performance; growth rate; mortality; and farmers management & breeding strategy
Economic analysis of alley farming with small ruminants
Evaluates alley farming models with small ruminants based on field and experimental data from southwest Nigeria, and compares them to basic alley cropping and to fallow systems. Describes the basic fallow model, the basic alley cropping model without animals, the alley farming model with goats, as well as with sheep
Collection and initial evaluation of Gliricidia sepium from Costa Rica
Describes a recently completed collection of Gliricidia sepium germplasm in Costa Rica. Presents and describes some characteristics of the collection sites and the range of variation in some plant characteristics
Small ruminant feed production in a farming systems context
Describes ILCA's research w. integrated alley farming, Gliricidia & Leucaena w. food crops, in southwest Nigeria, either w. a cut-and-carry browse feeding system for both sheep & goats or a grazed fallow system for sheep, outlining its biological & economic advantages and assessing its applicability in other parts of West Africa
Leuca-fence: Living fence for sheep using Leucaena leucocephala
Describes construction features of a `live' Leucaena leucocephala fence, developed by ILCA as part of its Small Ruminant Programme in Ibadan, Nigeria, that has been successfully used in restraining the movements of sheep
La culture en allees dans la zone humide: Une association de l'elevage et de l'agriculture
Alley farming with Gliricidia sepium: Germplasm evaluation and planting density trial
Reports results of two experiments conducted to evaluate a collection of Gliricidia sepium for initial growth and mulch production and to determine the effect of planting density on the establishment and subsequent production of Gliricidia
Sheep and goats, men and women: Household relations and small ruminant development in southwest Nigeria
Describes small ruminant production systems for the humid areas of southern Nigeria. Discusses the differences in ownership patterns between men and women; household relations particularly decision making processes related to the potential use of browse as fertilizer or feed; and the unique nature of small ruminants among agricultural resources
