    Women-led Fisheries Management: A Case Study From Bangladesh

    This is a case study of a women-led fishery in Bangladesh. Although women constitute 50% of the total population of Asia (Southern)-Bangladesh; only 18% are economically involved inthe total labor force. They are involved in diversified work within their homesteads. However, during times offamily needs and economic crisis, women are involved in non-traditional jobs. In the fisheries sector, Muslimwomen are traditionally not involved in fishing but they are involved in fish drying and salting. In the Hindudominated areas such as Goakhola-Hatiara, women are involved in fish catch as well as the collection of otheraquatic resources as one of their livelihood strategies. Women and subsistence fishers are taking the lead inmanaging a common capture fishery resource in Goakhola-Hatiara with the support from an NGO for perhapsthe first time in Bangladesh. However, the role of women in the Beel Management Committee is not well defined.Under the leadership of women the socio-economic conditions have changed and the social capital has increased

    Adaptation or conflict? Responses to climate change in water management in Bangladesh

    The potential of climate change to impact local conflict and cooperation over natural resources has received relatively little attention. Bangladesh floodplains are highly vulnerable to environmental stresses that are worsening with climate change, and community organisations have to respond to water insecurity − seasonally too little or too much. Two case studies based on action research in contrasting water and climate stressed floodplain environments in Bangladesh investigate local conflicts over water management that worsened when water regimes changed. By overcoming conflicts and improving adaptation for all local actors the cases reveal the importance of local knowledge, innovations in institutions, external facilitation, and incentives provided by disadvantaged groups who contribute towards costs in return for a share in decision making power and better adapted water management. The cases show how community organisations diversified their responsibilities and took up the challenge of water management to address local priorities and overcome conflicts. Without a more flexible and enabling approach, public investments in adaptation are likely to focus on strengthening existing water management infrastructure without understanding local social interactions and complexity. This may strengthen elite dominance and local conflicts if there is no comparable investment in developing robust and fair local institutions

    High Field (up to 140kOe) Angle Dependent Magneto Transport of Bi2Te3 Single Crystals

    We report the angle dependent high field (up to 140kOe) magneto transport of Bi2Te3 single crystals, a well-known topological insulator. The crystals were grown from melt of constituent elements via solid state reaction route by self-flux method. Details of crystal growth along with their brief characterization up to 5 Tesla applied field was reported by some of us recently [J. Magn. Mag. Mater. 428, 213 (2017)]. The angle dependence of the magneto-resistance (MR) of Bi2Te3 follows the cos Theta function i.e., MR is responsive, when the applied field is perpendicular (tilt angle Theta = o and/or 180) to the transport current. The low field (10 kOe) MR showed the signatures of weak anti localization (WAL) character with typical cusp near origin at 5 K. Further, the MR is linear right up to highest applied field of 140 kOe. The large positive MR are observed up to high temperatures and are above 250 and 150 percent at 140 kOe in perpendicular fields at 50 K and 100 K respectively. Heat capacity CP(T) measurements revealed the value of Debye temperature to be 135 K.     Aquaculture extension impacts in Bangladesh: a case study from Kapasia, Gazipur

    With many ponds and high demand for fish, Bangladesh has a high potential for aquaculture . Since the 1980s, there have been many aquaculture extension projects. As a result, pond aquaculture production is estimated to have trebled between approximately 1990 and 2000, and is currently estimated to be in order of 750 000 t per year. This gave an ideal opportunity to understand the impacts of aquaculture extension. This study investigated the practices and performance of farmers about six years after specific extension efforts had ended, in order to gain a better understanding of the sustained practices and benefits achieved by fish farmers from extension. It followed up an earlier project in Kapasia Upazila (subdistrict) in Gazipur District north of the capital Dhaka, where the WorldFish Center with funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Danish International Development Agency (Danida), had researched on farming systems and had introduced adaptive integrated aquaculture practices.     Coping and resilience in riverine Bangladesh

    This paper investigates the impacts of two successive years of severe floods on households, their coping strategies and resilience to riverine hazards in northern Bangladesh. Based on focus groups and interviews with the same households after floods in 2016 and 2017, we found a cumulative decline in assets through sale of livestock and borrowing, and almost all households evacuated short term to higher places. Three notable recent ways that vulnerable households use socio-hydrological landscapes to enhance their resilience to hazards were revealed. Firstly, local flood protection embankments were the main destination for evacuation and were highly valued as safe places, although they breached and failed to protect the land. Secondly, community organisations, formed mainly for livelihood enhancement, took initiatives to provide warnings, to help households relocate during floods, and to access relief and rehabilitation services. Thirdly, seasonal migration by men, particularly to urban areas, is an important element of long-term coping and resilience based on diversified livelihoods for about 70% of these rural households. Although the unintended use of infrastructure, social capital and urban opportunities all form part of coping and resilience strategies in hazardous riverine landscapes, the high mobility that they are based on is not supported by enabling policies

    High Field Magneto-Conductivity Analysis of Bi2Se3 Single Crystal

    We report the high field (up to 14Tesla) magneto-conductivity analysis of Bi2Se3 topological insulator grown via the self flux method. The detailed experimental investigations including crystal growth as well as the electrical, thermal and spectroscopic characterizations of the resultant Bi2Se3 single crystal are already reported by some of us. The current letter deals with high field magneto-conductivity analysis in terms of Hikami Larkin Nagaoka (HLN) model, which revealed that the electronic conduction is dominated by both surface states driven weak anti localization (WAL), as well the bulk WL (weak localization) states. Further, by applying the HLN equation we have extracted the fitting parameters i.e., phase coherence length and the pre-factor. The HLN equation exhibited values of [pre factor close to -1.0, indicating both WAL and WL contributions. On the other hand, the extracted phase coherence length is seen to decrease from 11.125 nm to 5.576 nm as the temperature is increased from 5K to 200K respectively.
