    Nickel Cadmium Charge Control Concepts

    Get PDF
The design and testing of charge control concepts for several power systems is presented. The design of the CRAM charge control system for the SAS satellites and the design of the battery charge regulator for the AMPTE satellites is reviewed. Another charge control concept examined is for the OPEN program and its use of a microprocessor. The use of the voltage limiter is also discussed

Performance of wind turbines in a turbulent atmosphere

    Get PDF
The effect of atmospheric turbulence on the power fluctuations of large wind turbines was studied. The significance of spatial non-uniformities of the wind is emphasized. The turbulent wind with correlation in time and space is simulated on the computer by Shinozukas method. The wind turbulence is modelled according to the Davenport spectrum with an exponential spatial correlation function. The rotor aerodynamics is modelled by simple blade element theory. Comparison of the spectrum of power output signal between 1-D and 3-D turbulence, shows the significant power fluctuations centered around the blade passage frequency

Less than perfect quantum wavefunctions in momentum-space: How phi(p) senses disturbances in the force

We develop a systematic approach to determine the large |p| behavior of the momentum-space wavefunction, phi(p), of a one-dimensional quantum system for wich the position-space wavefunction, psi(x), has a discontinuous derivative at any order. We find that if the k-th derivative of the potential energy function has a discontinuity, there is a corresponding discontinuity in psi^{(k+2)}(x) at the same point. This discontinuity leads directly to a power-law tail in the momentum-space wavefunction proportional to 1/p^{k+3}. A number of familiar pedagogical examples are examined in this context, leading to a general derivation of the result.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Am. J. Phy

Hybrid A/D converter for 200 deg C operation

    Get PDF
A 12 bit A/D converter was designed and developed which will operate at 200 C with .05 linearity, 1/accuracy, 350 WSec conversion time, and only 455 mW power consumption. This product also necessitated the development of a unique three metal system in which aluminum wire bonding is done utilizing aluminum bonding pads, gold wire bonding to all gold areas, and employment of a nickel interface between gold and aluminum connections. This system totally eliminates the formation of a intermetallics at the bonding interface which can lead to bond failure. This product represents an advancement in electronics as it proved the operation of integrated circuits at high temperature, as well as providing information about both the electrical and mechanical reliability of hybrid circuits at 200 C

Dancing with loneliness in later life: A pilot study mapping seasonal variations

    Get PDF
Temporal variations in loneliness at the individual and population level have long been reported in longitudinal studies. Although the evidence is limited due to methodological distinctions among studies, we broadly know that loneliness as one ages is a dynamic experience with people becoming more or less lonely or staying the same over time. There is, however, less evidence to understand individual variations in loneliness over shorter periods of time. This paper reports on one element of a small mixed method pilot study to investigate seasonal variations in loneliness over the course of one year and to test the effectiveness of tools used to collect data at repeated short intervals. Our findings confirm that loneliness is dynamic even over shorter periods of time with participants reporting to be lonelier in the evenings, weekends and spring-summer period. Data measures were at times problematic due to language and/or interpretation and reinforce the relevance of reviewing the more common approaches to studying loneliness to more effectively capture the complex and individual nature of the experience.Brunel University Londo

The Southern Vilnius Photometric System. IV. The E Regions Standard Stars

This paper is the fourth in a series on the extension of the Vilnius photometric system to the southern hemisphere. Observations were made of 60 stars in the Harvard Standard E regions to increase a set of standard stars.Comment: 6 pages, TeX, requires 2 macros (baltic2.tex, baltic4.tex) included no figures, to be published in Baltic Astronomy, Vol 6, pp1-6 (1997

    Self-contained breathing apparatus

    Get PDF
A self-contained breathing apparatus with automatic redundant fluid pressure controls and a facemask mounted low pressure whistle alarm is described. The first stage of the system includes pair of pressure regulators connected in parallel with different outlet pressures, both of which reduce the pressure of the stored supply gas to pressures compatible with the second stage breathing demand regulator. A primary regulator in the first stage delivers a low output pressure to the demand regulator. In the event of a failure closed condition of the primary regulator an automatic transfer valve switches on the backup regulator. A warning that the supply pressure has been depleted is also provided by a supply pressure actuated transfer valve which transfers the output of the first stage pressure regulators from the primary to the backup regulator. The alarm is activated in either the failure closed condition or if the supply pressure is reduced to a dangerously low level

Exploring Farm Business and Household Expenditure Patterns and Community Linkages

    Get PDF
Farm operators are an integral part of some rural economies. The businesses they operate often hire seasonal and full-time employees and purchase goods and services from local farm implement dealers, input suppliers, and financial institutions. Farm household spending on food, furniture and appliances, trucks and automobiles, and a range of consumer goods also support local jobs and retail businesses in some communities. Based on the 2002 agricultural census and the 2004 Agricultural Resource Management Survey, this paper explores the linkages between farm household/ business expenditures and local communities.Farm business expenditures, farm household spending, employment, community linkage, Consumer/Household Economics, Farm Management, Community/Rural/Urban Development,
