J.R.R. Tolkien and the Music of Middle Earth

Often referred to as “the Father of Modern Fantasy,” J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy between 1937 and 1949. Selling millions of copies each year, the Lord of the Rings is one of the bestselling books to date, and between the four books, six movies have been produced in an effort to relay the story of Middle Earth. However, movies do not stand alone as the only other art based off the trilogy. Throughout the novels, Tolkien includes poems that his characters sing, and in 1967, Donald Swann, after collaborating with the author, published a song cycle called The Road Goes Ever On. Based on the songs within the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this song cycle provides what could be considered the “official” music behind the words. The Road Goes Ever On provides a deeper look into the musical culture of Tolkien’s world through connections between the literature and the music as well as connections to “real-world” music, all while recombining the poetry of the novels to narrate the story of a traveler

    Shakespeare\u27s Philosophy of Music

Shakespeare is one of the most widely read figures in literature, but his use of music is not usually touched on in literary discussions of his works. In this paper, I discuss how Shakespeare portrays music within the context of his plays, both through dialogue and songs performed within each work. In Shakespeare’s time, Boethius’ philosophy of the music of the spheres was still highly popular. This was the idea that the arrangement of the cosmos mirrored musical proportions. As a result, every aspect of the universe was believed to be highly ordered, and this idea is prominent throughout Shakespeare’s works, from Hamlet to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. To make this clear to the reader, I discuss dialogue symmetry weaved throughout The Merchant of Venice, clear allusions to the music of the spheres in Pericles, and the use of music as a signifier of the strange and mysterious – from madness to love – in numerous works, always relating these topics back to the philosophy of the music of the spheres. In order to compile this information and make it clear, I researched the philosophy of music during Shakespeare’s era. I also researched how he uses music thematically to emphasize different characters’ struggles as well as plot details. After examining his plays as well as the other sources available on the subject, it is clear that Shakespeare was highly influenced by the philosophical and practical ideas regarding music of his time, specifically the theory of the music of the spheres

    This is My Stage

This project is an EP, for which I wrote or cowrote all the songs, acted as producer, worked with others to record, and mixed each song. During my semester in Nashville, I was asked to write a song either every week or every other week, and the songs on this EP represent about half of what I wrote over the course of the semester. Each week, instructors would tweak arrangements and the form of each song so that we could put on a concert each Thursday, and I made sure that I used our recording studio to record the best ones. All of these recordings were done in ProTools using the recording studio at the Contemporary Music Center in Nashville, and each session was moderated by Hannah Patey, Andrew Corbett, and myself. They were mixed in the studios on Cedarville’s campus, and a few extra parts were added and recorded at Cedarville as well. Overall, the EP reflects a lot of my personal journey during my Nashville semester, even though very abstractly at some points, and I titled it “This is My Stage,” to reflect that growth. As I want to work in the music industry after graduation, this project represents my first major step towards that goal, both in songwriting and mixing

Determination of Silver Traces in Pure Metallic Copper and Zinc by a Catalytic Photometric Method

Determination of silver traces in the presence of copper, zinc and sulphate ions by a catalytic method was studied. The highly sensitive method of silver determination is based on the catalytic effect of silver ions on the oxidation of salicylic acid by persulphate in the presence of 2,2\u27-dipyridyl as an activator. The reaction was followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the rate of change in absorbance with time at 420 nm after 10 min of reagents mixing. The sensitivity, precision and accuracy of the determination of silver traces were investigated in solutions containing excesses of interfering ions. The studied range of interfering ions concentrations was 8 × 10–6 to 2.4 × 10–2 mol dm–3 and corresponds to an amount ratio of interfering to silver ions from 50 to 150 000. The performed analyses showed that the accuracy and precision of silver trace determination by the proposed method is high even in the presence of a huge amount excess of interfering ions. The method was used for quantitative determination of silver contents in a copper foil and in a zinc rod. The obtained results were compared with the analyses performed by FAAS
