    The genome and transcriptome of Japanese flounder provide insights into flatfish asymmetry

    Flatfish have the most extreme asymmetric body morphology of vertebrates. During metamorphosis, one eye migrates to the contralateral side of the skull, and this migration is accompanied by extensive craniofacial transformations and simultaneous development of lopsided body pigmentation(1-5). The evolution of this developmental and physiological innovation remains enigmatic. Comparative genomics of two flatfish and transcriptomic analyses during metamorphosis point to a role for thyroid hormone and retinoic acid signaling, as well as phototransduction pathways. We demonstrate that retinoic acid is critical in establishing asymmetric pigmentation and, via cross-talk with thyroid hormones, in modulating eye migration. The unexpected expression of the visual opsins from the phototransduction pathway in the skin translates illumination differences and generates retinoic acid gradients that underlie the generation of asymmetry.     Effect of Service Priority on the Integrated Continuous Berth Allocation and Quay Crane Assignment Problem after Port Congestion

    Container seaport congestion is a challenging problem in improving the service level and optimizing evacuating container vessels after congestion. There is a lack of research on container vessel evacuation strategies for continuous terminals. In this article, the weight of the objective function is regarded as the index for the service priority of vessels. The effects of the service priority on the continuous terminal are analyzed by establishing a mixed integer programming model. The model minimizes the total weighted delay departure time of vessels. Two sets of weight values are adopted, including handling volume of each ship and the squared handling volume, then the optimization results are compared with the unweighted scenario. The model is solved using a genetic algorithm. Lianyungang Port is selected as a case study. The results show that the method using the square of handled container volume is more conducive to ensuring the shipping period of large vessels after congestion. Besides, the quay crane number of large vessels affecting the scheduling strategy is discussed. The method proposed in this article provides a new idea for arranging scheduling strategies in other ports under congestion situations, which can better ensure the planned shipping period of large vessels

    The complete mitochondrial genome of Comaster schlegelii (Crinoidea, Comatulida)

    Comaster schlegelii, belonging to the family Comatulidae, is a variable feather star distributed in the Pacific Ocean. The complete mitochondrial genome of this species was 15,887 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transport RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes and one control region. The whole mitochondrial genome of C. schlegelii had a high AT content of 72.73%. The phylogenetic relationship was reconstructed with 16 relevant echinoderms, which revealed C. schlegelii was closely clustered with Anneissia pinguis in the family Comatulidae

    Height and lung cancer risk: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

    The association between height and lung cancer risk has been investigated by epidemiological studies but the results are inconsistent. This meta-analysis was to evaluate whether the height is associated with lung cancer.We identified relevant articles by searching the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases, and reviewed the reference lists of selected papers. A random effect model was used to calculate summary odds ratios (OR) and relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Publication bias was estimated using Egger's regression asymmetry test.We included a total 16 studies (15 prospective studies and one case-control study) on adult height and lung cancer risk in the meta-analysis. Overall, per 10-cm height increases were associated with increased risk of lung cancer (RR 1.06; 95% CI 1.03-1.09, I2 = 43.6%).In this meta-analysis, high adult height is related to increased lung cancer risk. Well-designed, large prospective studies are required to obtain a better indication of the relationship

    Assessment of knowledge integration in student learning of momentum

    Momentum is a foundational concept in physics. Although it is often taught in introductory mechanics courses, there are a limited number of studies on this topic in the literature. The results from these studies have consistently shown that students have difficulties in understanding momentum, especially the connections between net force, time, and change in momentum, which are signs of fragmented knowledge structure and poor knowledge integration. This study adopts the conceptual framework representation to model student understanding and guide the design of an assessment test on momentum. Informed by the previous work on knowledge integration, the conceptual framework maps out the key concepts and their connections within a student’s knowledge structure. Recent studies have shown that a conceptual framework can be used as a guide to create assessment items that follow different reasoning pathways, probing various misconceptions and student difficulties. In this study, an assessment of momentum was developed and tested among a large number of U.S. college freshmen and Chinese high school students. Based on testing and interview results, students’ understanding is separated into three progression levels of knowledge integration including novicelike, transitional, and expertlike. Furthermore, the comparison between the two countries’ curriculum and momentum test results indicates that an emphasis on the central idea of impulse-momentum theorem can be an essential instructional strategy to help students make the necessary connections within their knowledge structure, leading to a deeper conceptual understanding of momentum

    Discovery and biological evaluation of novel CARM1/HDAC2 dual-targeting inhibitors with anti-prostate cancer agents

    AbstractProstate cancer (PCa) is a clinically heterogeneous disease with a progressively increasing incidence. Concurrent inhibition of coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) and histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) could potentially be a novel strategy against PCa. Herein, we identified seven compounds simultaneously targeting CARM1 and HDAC2 through structure-based virtual screening. These compounds possessed potent inhibitory activities at the nanomolar level in vitro. Among them, CH-1 was the most active inhibitor which exhibited excellent and balanced inhibitory effects against both CARM1 (IC50 = 3.71 ± 0.11 nM) and HDAC2 (IC50 = 4.07 ± 0.25 nM). MD simulations presented that CH-1 could stably bind the active pockets of CARM1 and HDAC2. Notably, CH-1 exhibited strong anti-proliferative activity against multiple prostate-related tumour cells (IC50 < 1 µM). In vivo, assessment indicated that CH-1 significantly inhibited tumour growth in a DU145 xenograft model. Collectively, CH-1 could be a promising drug candidate for PCa treatment
