    Pseudo-unitary symmetry and the Gaussian pseudo-unitary ensemble of random matrices

    Employing the currently discussed notion of pseudo-Hermiticity, we define a pseudo-unitary group. Further, we develop a random matrix theory which is invariant under such a group and call this ensemble of pseudo-Hermitian random matrices as the pseudo-unitary ensemble. We obtain exact results for the nearest-neighbour level spacing distribution for (2 X 2) PT-symmetric Hamiltonian matrices which has a novel form, s log (1/s) near zero spacing. This shows a level repulsion in marked distinction with an algebraic form in the Wigner surmise.     Quantum chaos, random matrix theory, and statistical mechanics in two dimensions - a unified approach

    We present a theory where the statistical mechanics for dilute ideal gases can be derived from random matrix approach. We show the connection of this approach with Srednicki approach which connects Berry conjecture with statistical mechanics. We further establish a link between Berry conjecture and random matrix theory, thus providing a unified edifice for quantum chaos, random matrix theory, and statistical mechanics. In the course of arguing for these connections, we observe sum rules associated with the outstanding counting problem in the theory of braid groups. We are able to show that the presented approach leads to the second law of thermodynamics.Comment: 23 pages, TeX typ

    Constraints On Radiative Neutrino Mass Models From Oscillation Data

    The three neutrino Zee model and its extension including three active and one sterile species are studied in the light of new neutrino oscillation data. We obtain analytical relations for the mixing angle in solar oscillations in terms of neutrino mass squared differences. For the four neutrino case, we obtain the result sin22θ1[(ΔmAtm2)2/(4ΔmLSND2Δm2)]2\mathsf{sin^2 2 \theta_\odot \approx 1 - [ (\Delta m^2_{Atm})^2/(4 \Delta m^2_{LSND} \Delta m^2_\odot) ]^2}, which can accommodate both the large and small mixing scenarios. We show that within this framework, while both the SMA-MSW and the LMA-MSW solutions can easily be accommodated, it would be difficult to reconcile the LOW-QVO solutions.     Participatory research for assessing the suitability of potential innovations: A case study on high-yielding varieties options for rice farmers in north east India

    This study examines the potential of participatory research to investigate the suitability and performance of high yielding rice varietal technologies with farmers of both hill and valley districts of Manipur based on front line demonstrations (FLDs) conducted from 2005 to 2012. Demonstrations were carried out in all the 9 districts (4 valley and 5 hill) in coordination with Krishi Vigyan Kendras to demonstrate the performance of RC Maniphou 10 on the farmers’ fields. Leimaphou a very popular variety among the farmers was grown as a check variety. The average yield of check variety ranged from 3.3 to 4.8 tonnes/ha, whereas the demonstrated variety RC Maniphou 10 recorded yield ranging from 4.6 to 6.2 tonnes/ha and yield gain over the check variety ranged from 27 to 43% in different districts. It was found that net returns have increased from 34% (in Imphal West) to 69% in Tamenglong- under improved practice (IP) than farmer’s practice (FP). The crop profitability has also increased by 40% in Imphal West and 75% in Tamenglong. The technology gap analysis revealed highest gap in the demonstration yield over potential yield in Senapati and Chandel districts (3.89 tonnes/ha), whereas it was lowest in Thoubal district (2.36 tonnes/ha). High extension gap of 1.52 tonnes/ha was recorded in Churachandpur followed by Tamenglong district. The technology index was minimum in Thoubal (27.7%) as compared to other districts. From this participatory research, farmers were convinced about the performance of RC Maniphou 10 and neighbouring farmers have taken seed which helped in spread of the variety. The variety was found suitable for both valley and hill areas

    Sneutrino Vacuum Expectation Values and Neutrino Anomalies Through Trilinear R-parity Violation

    Neutrino mass spectrum is reanalyzed in supersymmetric models with explicit trilinear RR violation. Models in this category are argued to provide simultaneous solution to the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies. It is shown specifically that large mixing and hierarchical masses needed for the vacuum solution of neutrino anomalies arise naturally in these models without requiring any additional symmetries or hierarchies among the trilinear couplings.Comment: References added and typos correcte

    Results from PAMELA, ATIC and FERMI : Pulsars or Dark Matter ?

    It is well known that the dark matter dominates the dynamics of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Its constituents remain a mystery despite an assiduous search for them over the past three decades. Recent results from the satellite-based PAMELA experiment detect an excess in the positron fraction at energies between 10-100 GeV in the secondary cosmic ray spectrum. Other experiments namely ATIC, HESS and FERMI show an excess in the total electron (\ps + \el) spectrum for energies greater 100 GeV. These excesses in the positron fraction as well as the electron spectrum could arise in local astrophysical processes like pulsars, or can be attributed to the annihilation of the dark matter particles. The second possibility gives clues to the possible candidates for the dark matter in galaxies and other astrophysical systems.     Approaching the motional ground state of a 10-kg object

    The motion of a mechanical object, even a human-sized object, should be governed by the rules of quantum mechanics. Coaxing them into a quantum state is, however, difficult because the thermal environment masks any quantum signature of the object\u27s motion. The thermal environment also masks the effects of proposed modifications of quantum mechanics at large mass scales. We prepared the center-of-mass motion of a 10-kilogram mechanical oscillator in a state with an average phonon occupation of 10.8. The reduction in temperature, from room temperature to 77 nanokelvin, is commensurate with an 11 orders-of-magnitude suppression of quantum back-action by feedback and a 13 orders-of-magnitude increase in the mass of an object prepared close to its motional ground state. Our approach will enable the possibility of probing gravity on massive quantum systems

    A System Dynamics Approach for Hospital Waste Management in a City in a Developing Country: The Case of Nablus, Palestine

    Hospitals and health centers provide a variety of healthcare services and normally generate hazardous waste as well as general waste. General waste has a similar nature to that of municipal solid waste and therefore could be disposed of in municipal landfills. However, hazardous waste poses risks to public health, unless it is properly managed. The hospital waste management system encompasses many factors, i.e., number of beds, number of employees, level of service, population, birth rate, fertility rate, and not in my back yard (NIMBY) syndrome. Therefore, this management system requires a comprehensive analysis to determine the role of each factor and its influence on the whole system. In this research, a hospital waste management simulation model is presented based on the system dynamics technique to determine the interaction among these factors in the system using a software package, ithink. This model is used to estimate waste segregation as this is important in the hospital waste management system to minimize risk to public health. Real data has been obtained from a case study of the city of Nablus, Palestine to validate the model. The model exhibits wastes generated from three types of hospitals (private, charitable, and government) by considering the number of both inpatients and outpatients depending on the population of the city under study. The model also offers the facility to compare the total waste generated among these different types of hospitals and anticipate and predict the future generated waste both infectious and non-infectious and the treatment cost incurred
