Revisiting the ‘Reformed Objection’ to Natural Theology

    Get PDF
In the present paper I address two significant and prevalent errors concerning to natural theology within the Reformed theological tradition. First, contrary to Alvin Plantinga, I argue that the idea of properly basic theistic belief has not motivated or otherwise grounded opposition to natural theology within the Reformed tradition. There is, in fact, a Reformed endorsement of natural theology grounded in the notion that theistic belief can be properly basic. Secondly, I argue that late nineteenth- and twentieth-century Reformed criticisms of natural theology do not constitute an objection to natural theology as such but rather an objection to natural theology construed in a particular way. I explore the nature of this objection and its compatibility with an alternative understanding of natural theology

In a 2007 Travel Management Plan, the United States Forest Service limited roads and trails designated for motorized recreation use and implemented a dispersed camping rule. Alleging violations of the Montana Wilderness Study Act and the National Environmental Policy Act, groups in support of motorized recreation challenged the Service’s Plan. The trial court granted the recreational groups’ motion for summary judgment on both the Study Act and NEPA allegations; the Ninth Circuit reversed

    City of Hugo v. Nichols

The City of Hugo, Oklahoma, entered into a contract with the City of Irving, Texas, for the sale of water. The Oklahoma Water Resources Board denied Hugo’s permit application to allocate water to Irving, basing its decision on Oklahoma law. Hugo sued the Board arguing that the dormant Commerce Clause trumped the Oklahoma law under the Supremacy Clause. The Tenth Circuit determined the dormant Commerce Clause did not convey a specific right to Hugo; therefore, Hugo lacked standing, as well as jurisdiction, to bring the claim in federal court

Strategic logic of elite purges in dictatorships

    Get PDF
Why do some leaders eliminate rivals from authoritarian regimes and therefore diminish elites' capabilities to remove them via coups, while others do not? By examining both dictators' incentives and opportunities to weaken regime elites, I show that dictators are more likely to eliminate rivals when elites' capabilities to oust dictators via coup is temporarily low. Thus, somewhat paradoxically, my theory predicts that dictators are more likely to weaken elites' capabilities as the threat of coup decreases rather than when coup risk is high. Furthermore, I argue that successful coups that put new dictators in power temporarily diminish elites' capabilities to remove dictators and, thus, provide a window of opportunity for the dictators to take steps to consolidate power. Empirical results using a new dataset on purges of militaries from 1969 to 2003 provide strong evidence for my hypotheses

Established in 1989, the G. Ross Roy Collection of Robert Burns and Burnsiana at the University of South Carolina\u27s Thomas Cooper Library is one of the world\u27s foremost collections dedicated to the study of Scotland\u27s greatest poet. Of the approximately six thousand items described in this catalogue, the largest sections are works by Burns and items of Burnsiana. These include not only separate editions of the poet\u27s major works but also editions with distinctive bindings and variants. Among the notable highlights is one of only two known first-edition copies of The Merry Muses of Caledonia (1799) and the only one with a complete title page. Also detailed are landmark collections of Burns, including the exceptionally rare Kilmarnock edition (1786) and the 1787 Edinburgh edition. The collection includes as well Burns\u27s annotated copy of John Moore\u27s novel Zeluco and a copy of The World with more than sixty ascriptions and comments in Burns\u27s hand. The catalogued Burnsiana features almost every book-length study of the poet as well as numerous pamphlets and books with significant sections about Burns. Among the collection\u27s manuscripts described in the catalog is the song Lesley Bailie—A Scots Ballad (1792), the only known copy in Burns\u27s hand. And the most unique artifacts of realia seen here are Burns\u27s porridge bowl and horn spoon, inherited by Roy from his grandfather. This illustrated catalogue of the collection\u27s expansive holdings was published in 2009 on the occasion of Burns\u27s 250th birthday as a guide to the current collection for researchers and collectors alike. Several hundred new items have been added to the Roy Collection since the publication of this catalogue in 2009.
