Studies on some smectogenic compounds with large bilayer spacings

In mesomorphic compounds with strongly polar end groups, near neighbor molecules have antiparallel correlations. This results in a bilayer structure which in turn leads to several interesting phenomena like reentrance and smectic polymorphism. After a brief review of the development of this subject, we report some unusual properties in several compounds with relatively large bilayer spacings (≥ 1.6 times the molecular length). For example, 4-n-decylphenyl-3'-methyl-4'-(4"-nitrobenzoyloxy)benzoate (10 PMNBB) shows a remarkably large expansion (~20%) of the bilayer spacing on cooling in the SA phase, the rate of expansion increasing with decrease of temperature. Further, the dielectric anisotropy reverses sign, becoming negative at lower temperatures. When the nitro group is replaced by a cyano group (10 PMCBB), (a) the rate of expansion of the bilayer spacing decreases with decrease of temperature, and (b) an SA - SA transition takes place with a jump of ~0.4 Å in the layer spacing at TAN - T ≈ 15°. We present results on several homologues of both the compounds as also on compounds with a lateral methoxy substituent

PL-AOMDV: An Enhanced Energy Efficient Multipath Routing for MANETs

    Get PDF
Multipath routing protocols are more prominent in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), as they beat certain impediments of single-path routing. Contrasted with single-path routing methodologies they have numerous points of interest in term of lower end-to-end delay, higher throughput, higher energy efficiency and network lifetime. Energy efficiency is essential prerequisites in numerous applications as nodes in MANETs are battery worked. In this paper, Power and Load Aware Ad-hoc On-demand Multipath Distance Vector Routing (PL-AOMDV) is presented. PL-AOMDV is a multipath routing protocol which chooses ways between source-destination pair in light of a consolidated cost function. The cost function is registered by considering remaining battery strength of a node and its present traffic. This article assesses the execution of PL-AOMDV by contrasting it with existing protocol AOMDV. Simulation results recommend that the proposed protocol has lower energy consumption, higher packet delivery ratio and throughput

Comparative X-ray and dielectric studies on some structurally related smectogenic compounds

    Get PDF
In continuation of our earlier work on smectogenic compounds exhibiting large bilayer spacings, we report in this paper a comparative study of several compounds with lateral methyl or methoxy substituent. Some of the compounds do not have any strongly polar end groups while others have a cyano end group. The dielectric (both static and relaxation studies up to 13 MHz) and X-ray investigations on these compounds enable us to elucidate the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed differences in the properties of the compounds. We also discuss the possible origin of the often observed reduction of the activation energy corresponding to the ε|| -relaxation in the smectic A phase compared to that in the nematic phase

Differential regulation of cholera toxin-inhibited Na-H exchange isoforms by butyrate in rat ileum

Electroneutral Na absorption occurs in the intestine via sodium-hydrogen exchanger (NHE) isoforms NHE2 and NHE3. Bicarbonate and butyrate both stimulate electroneutral Na absorption through NHE. Bicarbonate- but not butyrate-dependent Na absorption is inhibited by cholera toxin (CT). Long-term exposure to butyrate also influences expression of apical membrane proteins in epithelial cells. These studies investigated the effects of short- and long-term in vivo exposure to butyrate on apical membrane NHE and mRNA, protein expression, and activity in rat ileal epithelium that had been exposed to CT. Ileal loops were exposed to CT in vivo for 5 h and apical membrane vesicles were isolated. 22Na uptake was measured by using the inhibitor HOE694 to identify NHE2 and NHE3 activity, and Western blot analyses were performed. CT reduced total NHE activity by 70% in apical membrane vesicles with inhibition of both NHE2 and NHE3. Reduced NHE3 activity and protein expression remained low following removal of CT but increased to control values following incubation of the ileal loop with butyrate for 2 h. In parallel there was a 40% decrease in CT-induced increase in cAMP content. In contrast, NHE2 activity partially increased following removal of CT and was further increased to control levels by butyrate. NHE2 protein expression did not parallel its activity. Neither NHE2 nor NHE3 mRNA content were affected by CT or butyrate. These results indicate that CT has varying effects on the two apical NHE isoforms, inhibiting NHE2 activity without altering its protein expression and reducing both NHE3 activity and protein expression. Butyrate restores both CT-inhibited NHE2 and NHE3 activities to normal levels but via different mechanisms

Magnetic stress as a driving force of structural distortions: the case of CrN

We show that the observed transition from rocksalt to orthorhombic Pnma_{nma} symmetry in CrN can be understood in terms of stress anisotropy. Using local spin density functional theory, we find that the imbalance between stress stored in spin-paired and spin-unpaired Cr nearest neighbors causes the rocksalt structure to be unstable against distortions and justifies the observed antiferromagnetic ordering. This stress has a purely magnetic origin, and may be important in any system where the coupling between spin ordering and structure is strong.Comment: 4 pages (two columns) 4 figure
