The Chirality operators for Heisenberg Spin Systems

The ground state of closed Heisenberg spin chains with an odd number of sites has a chiral degeneracy, in addition to a two-fold Kramers degeneracy. A non-zero chirality implies that the spins are not coplanar, and is a measure of handedness. The chirality operator, which can be treated as a spin-1/2 operator, is explicitly constructed in terms of the spin operators, and is given as commutator of Permutation operators.Comment: 7 pages, report IC/94/23. Covariance Risk, Mispricing, and the Cross Section of Security Returns

    Get PDF
This paper offers a multisecurity model in which prices reflect both covariance risk and misperceptions of firms' prospects, and in which arbitrageurs trade to profit from mispricing. We derive a pricing relationship in which expected returns are linearly related to both risk and mispricing variables. The model thereby implies a multivariate relation between expected return, beta, and variables that proxy for mispricing of idiosyncratic components of value tends to be arbitraged away but systematic mispricing is not. The theory is consistent with several empirical findings regarding the cross-section of equity returns, including: the observed ability of fundamental/price ratios to forecast aggregate and cross-sectional returns, and of market value but not non-market size measures to forecast returns cross-sectionally; and the ability in some studies of fundamental/price ratios and market value to dominate traditional measures of security risk. The model also offers several untested empirical implications for the cross-section of expected returns and for the relation of volume to subsequent volatility.

Spin Decoherence from Hamiltonian dynamics in Quantum Dots

The dynamics of a spin-1/2 particle coupled to a nuclear spin bath through an isotropic Heisenberg interaction is studied, as a model for the spin decoherence in quantum dots. The time-dependent polarization of the central spin is calculated as a function of the bath-spin distribution and the polarizations of the initial bath state. For short times, the polarization of the central spin shows a gaussian decay, and at later times it revives displaying nonmonotonic time dependence. The decoherence time scale dep ends on moments of the bath-spin distribuition, and also on the polarization strengths in various bath-spin channels. The bath polarizations have a tendency to increase the decoherence time scale. The effective dynamics of the central spin polarization is shown to be describ ed by a master equation with non-markovian features.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures Accepted for publication in Phys.Rev

Formation of quasi-free and bubble positronium states in water and aqueous solutions

It is shown that in aqueous solutions a positronium atom is first formed in the quasi-free state, and, after 50-100 ps, becomes localized in a nanobubble. Analysis of the annihilation spectra of NaNO3 aqueous solutions shows that the hydrated electron is not involved in the positronium (Ps) formation

Divergent barotropic instability of the tropical asymmetric easterly jet

    Get PDF
The divergent barotropic instability of a zonally averaged, observed, tropical, upper tropospheric, monsoon easterly jet is investigated by numerical integration of a linear spectral model. The Rossby radius of deformation for the upper troposphere is computed from a three-layer model of the atmosphere. It is shown that the antisymmetric zonal flow components in the jet contribute in stabilizing the short waves and destabilizing the long waves. Furthermore, the maximum amplitude of the asymmetric preferred wave is shifted southward (to 6°N) to a region where a largest positive maximum of −ūvv is located for the asymmetric profile. A large decrease in the meridional scale of the wave and a threefold increase in the ratio of the computed maximum southward-to-northward easterly momentum transports is also found for the asymmetric jet compared to the symmetric jet. The divergence is found to increase the growth rates of all the waves and, also to increase the preferred wavelength. The most unstable divergent asymmetric wave is shown to have a wavelength of 6500 km, an e-folding time of 6.5 days and a westward phase speed of 23.5 m s−1. The zonal scale of the preferred wave is nearly equal to the Rossby radius of deformation

Deep Learning for Forecasting Stock Returns in the Cross-Section

Many studies have been undertaken by using machine learning techniques, including neural networks, to predict stock returns. Recently, a method known as deep learning, which achieves high performance mainly in image recognition and speech recognition, has attracted attention in the machine learning field. This paper implements deep learning to predict one-month-ahead stock returns in the cross-section in the Japanese stock market and investigates the performance of the method. Our results show that deep neural networks generally outperform shallow neural networks, and the best networks also outperform representative machine learning models. These results indicate that deep learning shows promise as a skillful machine learning method to predict stock returns in the cross-section.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 8 tables, accepted at PAKDD 201

Combustion synthesis of cadmium sulphide nanomaterials for efficient visible light driven hydrogen production from water

    Get PDF
Anion-doped cadmium sulphide nanomaterials have been synthesized by using combustion method at normal atmospheric conditions. Oxidant/fuel ratios have been optimized in order to obtain CdS with best characteristics. Formation of CdS and size of crystallite were identified by X-ray diffraction and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of C and N in the CdS matrix. The observed enhanced photocatalytic activity of the CdS nanomaterials for the hydrogen production from water (2120 μmol/h) can be attributed to high crystallinity, low band gap and less exciton recombination due to the C and N doping

Effective chiral-spin Hamiltonian for odd-numbered coupled Heisenberg chains

An L×L \times \infty system of odd number of coupled Heisenberg spin chains is studied using a degenerate perturbation theory, where LL is the number of coupled chains. An effective chain Hamiltonian is derived explicitly in terms of two spin half degrees of freedom of a closed chain of LL sites, valid in the regime the inter-chain coupling is stronger than the intra-chain coupling. The spin gap has been calculated numerically using the effective Hamiltonian for L=3,5,7,9L=3,5,7,9 for a finite chain up to ten sites. It is suggested that the ground state of the effective Hamiltonian is correlated, by examining variational states for the effective chiral-spin chain Hamiltonian.Comment: 9 Pages, Latex, report ICTP-94-28

Enhancement in electron and ion temperatures due to solar flares as measured by SROSS-C2 satellite

    Get PDF
The observations on the ionospheric electron and ion temperatures (Te and Ti) measured by the RPA payload aboard the SROSS-C2 satellite have been used to study the effect of solar flares on ionospheric heating. The data on solar flare has been obtained from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) Boulder, Colorado (USA). It has been found that the electron and ion temperatures have a consistent enhancement during the solar flares on the dayside Earth's ionosphere. The estimated enhancement for the average electron temperature is from 1.3 to 1.9 times whereas for ion temperature it is from 1.2 to 1.4 times to the normal days average temperature. The enhancement of ionospheric temperatures due to solar flares is correlated with the diurnal variation of normal days' ionospheric temperatures. The solar flare does not have any significant effect on the nightside ionosphere. A comparison with the temperature obtained from the IRI-95 model also shows a similar enhancement
