Transport and magnetic anomalies due to A-site ionic size mismatch in La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5x_{0.5-x}Ba_{x}MnO3_3

We present results of electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and ac and dc magnetic susceptibility on polycrystalline samples of the type La(0.5)Ca(0.5-x)Ba(x)MnO(3) synthesized under identical heat treatment conditions. The substitution of larger Ba ions for Ca results in a non- monotonic variation of the curie temperature as the system evolves from a charge ordered insulating state for x=0 to a ferromagnetic metallic state for x=0.5. An intermediate compositino, x=0.1, interestingly exhibits ferromagnetic. insulating behaviour with thermal hysteresis in ac chi around the curie tem- perature (120K). The x=0.2 and 0.3 compounds exhibit semiconducting like behavior as the temperature is lowered below 300K, with a broad peak in rho around 80-100K: These compositions exhibit a weak increase in rho as the temperature lowered below 30K, indicative of electron localization effects. These compositions also undergo ferromagnetic transitions below about 200 and 235K respectively, though these are non-hysteretic; above all, for these compositions, MR is large and conveniently measurable over the entire tempera- ture range of measurement below Tc. This experimental finding may be of interest from the application point of view. We infer that the A-site ionic-size mismatch plays a crucial role in the deciding these properties.Comment: 5 pages, 6 Figures, Resubmitted with extended abstract on 26 Nov, 199

Can i teach a robot to replicate a line art

Line art is arguably one of the fundamental and versatile modes of expression. We propose a pipeline for a robot to look at a grayscale line art and redraw it. The key novel elements of our pipeline are: a) we propose a novel task of mimicking line drawings, b) to solve the pipeline we modify the Quick-draw dataset to obtain supervised training for converting a line drawing into a series of strokes c) we propose a multi-stage segmentation and graph interpretation pipeline for solving the problem. The resultant method has also been deployed on a CNC plotter as well as a robotic arm. We have trained several variations of the proposed methods and evaluate these on a dataset obtained from Quick-draw. Through the best methods we observe an accuracy of around 98% for this task, which is a significant improvement over the baseline architecture we adapted from. This therefore allows for deployment of the method on robots for replicating line art in a reliable manner. We also show that while the rule-based vectorization methods do suffice for simple drawings, it fails for more complicated sketches, unlike our method which generalizes well to more complicated distributions.Comment: 9 pages, Accepted for the 2020 Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV '20); Supplementary Video: https://youtu.be/nMt5Dw04Xh

Site-directed spin labeling of 2′-amino groups in RNA with isoindoline nitroxides that are resistant to reduction

Post-print (lokagerð höfundar)Two aromatic isothiocyanates, derived from isoindoline nitroxides, were synthesized and selectively reacted with 2′-amino groups in RNA. The spin labels displayed limited mobility in RNA, making them promising candidates for distance measurements by pulsed EPR. After conjugation to RNA, a tetraethyl isoindoline derivative showed significant stability under reducing conditions. This work was supported by the Icelandic Research Fund (141062-051). Magnetic behaviour of Eu_2CuSi_3: Large negative magnetoresistance above Curie temperature

We report here the results of magnetic susceptibility, electrical-resistivity, magnetoresistance (MR), heat-capacity and ^{151}Eu Mossbauer effect measurements on the compound, Eu_2CuSi_3, crystallizing in an AlB_2-derived hexagonal structure. The results establish that Eu ions are divalent, undergoing long-range ferromagnetic-ordering below (T_C=) 37 K. An interesting observation is that the sign of MR is negative even at temperatures close to 3T_C, with increasing magnitude with decreasing temperature exhibiting a peak at T_C. This observation, being made for a Cu containing magnetic rare-earth compound for the first time, is of relevance to the field of collosal magnetoresistance.Comment: To appear in PRB, RevTex, 4 pages text + 6 psFigs. A green bio-organic catalyst (taurine) promoted one-pot synthesis of (R/S)-2-thioxo-3,4-dihydropyrimidine(TDHPM)-5-carboxanilides: chiral investigations using circular dichroism and validation by computational approaches

Owing to the massive importance of dihydropyrimidine (DHPMs) scaffolds in the pharmaceutical industry and other areas, we developed an effective and sustainable one-pot reaction protocol for the synthesis of (R/S)-2-thioxo-DHPM-5-carboxanilides via the Biginelli-type cyclo-condensation reaction of aryl aldehydes, thiourea and various acetoacetanilide derivatives in ethanol at 100 °C. In this protocol, taurine was used as a green and reusable bio-organic catalyst. Twenty-three novel derivatives of (R/S)-TDHPM-5-carboxanilides and their structures were confirmed by various spectroscopy techniques. The aforementioned compounds were synthesized via the formation of one asymmetric centre, one new C–C bond, and two new C–N bonds in the final product. All the newly synthesized compounds were obtained in their racemic form with up to 99% yield. In addition, the separation of the racemic mixture of all the newly synthesized compounds was carried out by chiral HPLC (Prep LC), which provided up to 99.99% purity. The absolute configuration of all the enantiomerically pure isomers was determined using a circular dichroism study and validated by a computational approach. With up to 99% yield of 4d, this one-pot synthetic approach can also be useful for large-scale industrial production. One of the separated isomers (4R)-(+)-4S developed as a single crystal, and it was found that this crystal structure was orthorhombic
