Let q1q\geq 1 be any integer and let ϵ[111,12) \epsilon \in [\frac{1}{11}, \frac{1}{2}) be a given real number. In this short note, we prove that for all primes pp satisfying p\equiv 1\pmod{q}, \quad \log\log p > \frac{\log 6.83}{\frac{1}{2}-\epsilon} \mbox{ and } \frac{\phi(p-1)}{p-1} \leq \frac{1}{2} - \epsilon, there exists a quadratic non-residue gg which is not a primitive root modulo pp such that gcd(g,p1q)=1gcd\left(g, \frac{p-1}{q}\right) = 1.Comment: to appear in Bulletin of the Australian Mathematical Societ

    Get PDF
Nephrotic syndrome is a spectrum of renal disorders in which proteinuria is a hallmark. When pregnancy is affected by nephrotic syndrome, the maternal and fetal outcome, as well as the required treatment, depends on the underlying cause and severity of the disease. Pregnant patients with nephrotic syndrome are more prone to develop pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, low birth weight babies and intrauterine fetal growth restriction. Here we are presenting a case report on pregnancy with nephrotic syndrome which was managed by multidisciplinary approach with successful outcome

    Get PDF
AbstractThrombocytosis and hyperkalemia are entities which can have sinister complications in the perioperative period and can be worrisome to the alert anesthesiologist. Hence it is good to be aware of variants which are quite benign and need not lead to delaying of anaesthesia administration. One such case is reported to highlight this fact

    A Generalized Log-Weibull Distribution with Bio-Medical Applications

    Get PDF
Here we consider a generalized log-transformed version of the Weibull distribution and investigate some of its important properties like expressions for the cumulative distribution function hazard rate function, quantile function, characteristic function, raw moments, incomplete moments, etc. The distribution and moments of order statistics are obtained along with some results on certain structural properties of the distribution. The maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the distribution is attempted for both complete and censored data sets and the usefulness of the distribution is illustrated with the help of real-life data sets from biomedical fields

    Get PDF
Cloud computing is one of the leading computing paradigms that offers services like Infrastructure as a Service called IaaS, Platform as a Service called PaaS, Software as a Service called SaaS to users on a pay per use model. The massive data centers that help cloud offer all the above stated services are virtualized. Virtualization enables easy management of resources. However, the massive physical servers in the data centers tend to consume enormous energy, leading to high environmental impact. So, energy conservation with optimum usage and management is one of the prominent areas of research in cloud. The major techniques to manage energy is to identify unused physical resources and put them to low power state or sleep state. But, the usage of resources depends heavily on the user requirements in an elastic environment like cloud. Hence machine learning techniques can be used to predict the usage patterns thereby identifying the physical resources required to fulfill the user demand. This paper aims to survey the avenues wherein machine learning can be applied to help energy management in a cloud data center

The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced various aspects of our lives and triggered many long-term consequences. The actual well-being of women IT employees is in danger due to the prolonged period of work from home as the pandemic has influenced individuals differently across the world. Physical distancing, dread, vulnerability, and a continued period of remote working has prompted an enormous number of women in the IT sector to experience challenges to emotional well-being. Work-related pressure is one of the major sources of stress in the modern working environment. Stress and unfavorable working conditions have been connected to low efficiency, truancy, and increasing rates of mishaps in and out of work. This is largely due to ailments, substance abuse, and family issues experienced by a large number of work-from-home women software company employees. Extended period of work from home can disturb women and their mental health as they try to strike a work-life balance. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of occupational stress factors on the mental health of the women software professionals working remotely in urban Bangalore during the COVID-19 pandemic. The exploratory factor analysis identifies that Workload, Job Insecurity, Poor Work Environment, Personal Problems, and Lack of Structure as the main five factors of occupational stress while working from home for women IT employees in urban Bangalore. Multiple regression analysis undertaken in the study indicates that the relationship between the five factors of Occupational Stress and Mental Health is negatively significant with an inverse relationship

Clinical Evaluation and Therapeutic Outcome in Hirsutism

INTRODUCTION : Hirsutism is defined as the presence of terminal coarse hairs in women in a male like distribution. Hirsutism affects approximately 5 to 10% of women of reproductive age. Androgen dependent areas include the chin, upper lip, chest, abdomen, back and anterior thighs. Hirsutism usually represents a variation of normal hair growth, but rarely it is a harbinger of a serious underlying condition. It may be a complaint for which the patient seeks medical advice or may be only a suspicion by a dermatologist seeing a woman for other androgen related problems like female pattern hair loss. Studies of the psychological burden of hirsutism suggest that it has a significant impact and adversely affects quality of life. Virilisation refers to a condition in which androgen levels are sufficiently high to cause additional signs and symptoms such as deepening of voice, breast atrophy, increased muscle bulk, clitoromegaly and increased libido. Virilisation is an ominous sign that suggests the possibility of an ovarian or adrenal neoplasm. Genetic factors and ethnic background also influence hair growth. In general, dark haired individuals tend to be more hirsute than fair individuals. AIMS OF THE STUDY 1. To know the prevalence of hirsutism among different age groups. 2. To identify the associated factors like acne, acanthosis nigricans, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and obesity. 3. To study the etiology of hirsutism. 4. To study the efficacy of Nd YAG laser & IPL in selected hirsutism patients. 5. To study the incidence of side effects following Nd YAG laser & IPL. MATERIALS AND METHODS : Study design : Prospective descriptive study. Study centre : Department of Dermatology, Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, Chennai Study period : October 2009 to September 2011. Sample size : Seventy three patients. Inclusion criteria : All hirsutism patients with Ferriman Gallway score of 8 or more. Exclusion criteria : Patients with Ferriman Gallway score of <8. Clinical evaluation : Complete history, general examination and dermatological examination were done for all patients included in the study by using a proforma. Investigations including postprandial blood glucose, lipid profile, USG abdomen & pelvis, hormonal assay - LH, FSH, testosterone, thyroid function test & prolactin were done for all patients. DHEAS & 17 hydroxy progesterone were done for indicated cases. With the investigation results, endocrine opinion was obtained for all patients. Polycystic ovarian disease was diagnosed based on Rotterdam Consesus Criteria. CONCLUSIONS : 1. Hirsutism is commonly seen in the age group of 14 to 48 years. Adolescent patients appear to be more concerned about hirsutism as compared to those in the older age group. 2. Acanthosis nigricans (31.5%) was the most common cutaneous finding in our study. Acne was associated in 17.8% patients. Androgenetic alopecia was found in 15% of cases. 3. Infertility was seen in 12.2% case. Diabetes mellitus with hypertension was seen in 9.6% patients and obesity in 28% of patients. 4. Idiopathic hirsutism (53%) was the most common cause in our study. PCOS (31.5%) was the second common cause. Family history was present in 22% cases. 5. Due to PCOS, hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome, 48% of patients had menstrual irregularities. 6. Most of the patients (73%) had Ferri Gallwey score in the range of 8 to 16. All patients, however, were more concerned about facial hair than those on other body areas. 70 7. In Q switched Nd YAG, most of the patients had good response after the 5th sitting. In IPL, majority had good response after the 4th sitting. 8. Good response was seen in 70% of the patients in both NdYAG and IPL groups. Excellent response was seen in 20% of Nd YAG group and 15% of IPL group. There is no difference in hair removal efficacy between PCOS and non PCOS patients. 9. In Q switched Nd YAG and IPL hair removal, there was no difference in efficacy in different skin types. 10. Transient erythema, edema and crusting were the complications observed in Q switched Nd YAG laser hair reduction. No side effects with IPL laser were noted in our study

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are defined as “a collective term embracing a number of clinical problems that involve the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint and associated structures, or both”.MRI is an excellent imaging method for evaluating soft tissue abnormalities of the TMJ with a very high predictive value. AIM: The aim of this study is to correlate the clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder with articular disc morphology and position in MRI. METHODOLOGY: A Prospective analytical study was conducted among 15 patients with symptomatic temporomandibular joint disorders. Patients were clinically examined and parameters were recorded. MRI images were taken for these patients and interpreted for articular eminence morphology, articular disc morphology and disc position in open and close mouth. Clinical parameters were then correlated with MRI findings. Data was analysed using SPSS software. RESULTS: Sigmoid was the most prevalent articular eminence morphology on both right (80.0%) and left (60.0%) TMJ. Biconcave was the predominant disc morphology on both TMJ (66.7%). Disc was posteriorly positioned in open mouth in both TMJ (86.7%) and anterosuperiorly positioned in close mouth in both TMJ(53.3%). CONCLUSION: Though we have correlated numerous clinical and radiographic features we couldn’t conclude any particular clinical feature with radiographic feature which may be due to smaller sample size
