    Study on Training Strategies for Effective Peer Review

    As a form of collaborative learning, peer review has gained increasing popularity in writing instruction and been wildly adopted in EFL writing classrooms. Preparing students for peer review are an essential part of training. Since 1990s, there has been a number of studies conducted in the application of this technique. However, there is surprisingly little training in college on how to develop this essential skill or discussion of best practices to ensure that reviewers at all levels efficiently provide the most useful review. This paper presents some strategies of training students before, during and after peer review and aims to help students become effective peer reviewers.

    Study on “Chinese Cultural Aphasia” of Non-English Majors

    Learning language is, as a matter of fact, a process of learning its culture.  However, current college English language teaching focusses on Western culture, while Chinese culture is being neglected. Therefore, many college students cannot accurately express words or sentences about Chinese culture in English. The study found that more than half of the non-English majors have difficulty in expressing some words or sentences which connect with Chinese culture in English. The author presents some of the causes of this phenomenon and puts forward some relevant strategies to solve the “Chinese Cultural Aphasia”

    Impacts of Peer Response on the Cultivation of English Writing Ability

    There are some common problems existing in the cultivation of university students’ English writing ability, such as college students’ low writing ability, the strong dependence of English writing, the lack of communication between teachers and students, the shortage of English teachers, and the longtime of teachers’ essay scoring. The effective reforms must be adopted in order to change the present cultivation situation of university students’ English writing ability. Peer response has several advantages in improving the cultivation models of English writing ability and can produce important impacts on the cultivation of university students’ English writing ability. The study explores the impacts from the assessment of English writing, improving students’ cognitive development, cultivating students’ critical thinking and stimulating students’ writing activity

    Irregular meal timing is associated with Helicobacter pylori infection and gastritis

    Background Helicobacter pylori (HP) is associated with chronic gastritis and gastric cancer, and more than half of the world’s population is chronically infected. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate whether an irregular meal pattern is associated with increased risk of gastritis and HP infection. Methods The study involved 323 subjects, divided into three groups: subjects with HP infection and gastritis, with gastritis, and a control group. Subjects were interviewed on eating habits and meal timing. Multivariate logistic regression was used to compare groups. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were derived controlling for gender, age, stress and probiotic consumption. Results Subjects who deviated from their regular meals by 2 hours or more had a significantly higher incidence of HP infection with gastritis (adjusted OR= 13.3, 95% CI 5.3–33.3, p<0.001) and gastritis (adjusted OR=6.1, 95% CI 2.5–15.0, p<0.001). Subjects who deviated their meals by 2 hours or more, twice or more per week, had an adjusted OR of 6.3 and 3.5 of acquiring HP infection with gastritis (95% CI 2.6–15.2, p<0.001) and gastritis (95% CI 1.5–8.5, p<0.001) respectively. Conclusion Frequent deviation in meal timing over a prolonged period appears associated with increased risk of developing HP infection and gastritis

    Urinary acrolein protein conjugates-tocreatinine ratio is positively associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Acrolein, an unsaturated aldehyde, plays a pathological role in neurodegenerative diseases. However, less is known about its effects on peripheral neuropathy. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of acrolein and diabetic peripheral neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes. We recruited 148 ambulatory patients with type 2 diabetes. Each participant underwent an assessment of the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument Physical Examination. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy was defined as Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument Physical Examination score ≥ 2.5. Serum levels and urinary levels of acrolein protein conjugates were measured. Urinary acrolein protein conjugates-to-creatinine ratios were determined. Patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy had significantly higher urinary acrolein protein conjugates-to-creatinine ratios than those without diabetic peripheral neuropathy (7.91, 95% CI: 5.96–10.50 vs 5.31, 95% CI: 4.21–6.68, P = 0.029). Logarithmic transformation of urinary acrolein protein conjugates-to-creatinine ratios was positively associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy in univariate logistic analysis, and the association remained significant in multivariate analysis (OR = 2.45, 95% CI: 1.12–5.34, P = 0.025). In conclusion, urinary acrolein protein conjugates-to-creatinine ratio may act as a new biomarker for diabetic peripheral neuropathy in type 2 diabetes. The involvement of acrolein in the pathogenesis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy warrants further investigation

    The prognostic index PRIMA-PI combined with Ki67 as a better predictor of progression of disease within 24 months in follicular lymphoma

    BackgroundProgression of disease within 24 months (POD24) is a risk factor for poor survival in follicular lymphoma (FL), and there is currently no optimal prognostic model to accurately predict patients with early disease progression. How to combine traditional prognostic models with new indicators to establish a new prediction system, to predict the early progression of FL patients more accurately is a future research direction.MethodsThis study retrospectively analyzed patients with newly diagnosed FL patients in Shanxi Provincial Cancer Hospital from January 2015 to December 2020. Data from patients undergoing immunohistochemical detection (IHC) were analyzed using χ2 test and multivariate Logistic regression. Also, we built a nomogram model based on the results of LASSO regression analysis of POD24, which was validated in both the training set and validation set, and additional external validation was performed using a dataset (n = 74) from another center, Tianjin Cancer Hospital.ResultsThe multivariate Logistic regression results suggest that high-risk PRIMA-PI group, Ki-67 high expression represent risk factors for POD24 (P&lt;0.05). Next, PRIMA-PI and Ki67 were combined to build a new model, namely, PRIMA-PIC to reclassify high and low-risk groups. The result showed that the new clinical prediction model constructed by PRIMA-PI with ki67 has a high sensitivity to the prediction of POD24. Compared to PRIMA-PI, PRIMA-PIC also has better discrimination in predicting patient’s progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). In addition, we built nomogram models based on the results of LASSO regression (histological grading, NK cell percentage, PRIMA-PIC risk group) in the training set, which were validated using internal validation set and external validation set, we found that C-index and calibration curve showed good performance.ConclusionAs such, the new predictive model-based nomogram established by PRIMA-PI and Ki67 could well predict the risk of POD24 in FL patients, which boasts clinical practical value

    Application of circulating tumour DNA in terms of prognosis prediction in Chinese follicular lymphoma patients

    Background: Follicular lymphoma (FL), an indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), is generally incurable. Favourable prognosis and durable remission are crucial for FL patients. The genetic mutation spectrum provides novel biomarkers for determining the prognosis of FL patients, but its detection is easily affected by the collection of tumour tissue biopsies. In this study, we aimed to describe the mutational landscape of FL using circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) samples and to explore the relationship between mutations and prognostic indicators of clinical outcome in patients with newly diagnosed follicular lymphoma and the prognostic value of such mutations.Methods: A total of 28 patients with newly diagnosed FL were included in this study. A targeted NGS-based 59-gene panel was used to assess the ctDNA mutation profiles. Differences in clinical factors between patients carrying mutations and those without mutations were analysed. We also explored the relationship between gene mutation status, mean VAFs (variant allele frequencies) and clinical factors. The Kaplan‒Meier method was applied to analyse the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of patients carrying mutations and those without mutations.Results: ctDNA mutations were detectable in 21 (75%) patients. The most commonly mutated genes were CREBBP (54%, 15/28), KMT2D (50%, 14/28), STAT6 (29%, 8/28), CARD11 (18%, 5/28), PCLO (14%, 4/28), EP300 (14%, 4/28), BCL2 (11%, 3/28), and TNFAIP3 (11%, 3/28), with a mutation frequency of &gt;10%. Patients with detectable ctDNA mutation tended to present with advanced Ann Arbor stage (III-IV) (p = 0.009), high FLIPI risk (3–5) (p = 0.023) and severe lymph node involvement (No. of involved areas ≥5) (p = 0.02). In addition, we found that the mean VAF was significantly higher in patients with advanced Ann Arbor stage, high-risk FLIPI, elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH: 0–248U/L), advanced pathology grade, bone marrow involvement (BMI) and lymph node involvement. Additionally, KMT2D, EP300, and STAT6 mutations were associated with inferior PFS (p &lt; 0.05).Conclusion: We described the ctDNA mutation landscapes in Chinese patients with newly diagnosed FL and found that ctDNA VAF means reflect tumour burden. Moreover, PFS was shorter in patients with KMT2D, EP300 and STAT6 mutations
