    Hydroxyapatite Humidifier Vibrator Housing Fabrication and Characteristics

    The humidifier vibrator housing is difficult to clean and prone to contamination due to its metallic material. To overcome these shortcomings, the humidifier vibrator housing was manufactured using Hydroxyapatite as a raw material. Although hydroxyapatite has excellent antibacterial properties and biocompatibility, it is difficult to manufacture a sintered body due to its weak fracture toughness. Therefore, hydroxyapatite sintered compacts were prepared according to the amount of plasticizer added and their physical properties were compared. The average compressive strength was 395.1 N·mm-2 at 8 % of the amount of added plasticizer, and the average bending strength was 61.8 N·mm-2 at 6 % of the amount of added plasticizer. The hydroxyapatite sintered compact showed the effect of inhibiting the production of bacteria regardless of the amount of plasticizer added. As a result of this physical property study, it was possible to develop a humidifier vibrator housing with excellent antibacterial properties and maintaining mechanical strength

    Mycobiota community and fungal species response to development stage and fire blight disease in apples

    Fire blight disease, caused by the bacterial pathogen Erwinia amylovora, has been a significant concern for over 50 countries worldwide. The efficacy of chemical pesticides currently available for disease control is limited. To address this issue, research is being conducted to explore environmentally friendly control methods, particularly biological control using beneficial microorganisms. However, there is limited research on the apple microbiota community and minimal research has been conducted on fungal communities that may exhibit reliable performance in apple trees. Therefore, our objective was to analyze the fungal communities present in apples at different developmental stages and in different tissues, aiming to identify potential biological control agents for fire blight disease. Our findings indicate that the fungal communities present in apple buds, flowers and leaves play an important role in inhibiting the invasion of E. amylovora. Specifically, we propose GS11 and Lipomyces starkeyi as potential keystone taxa that respond to fire blight disease. These findings provide insights into the continuity and discontinuity of fungal community structure in different developmental stages of apples and offer predictions for potential biological control agents for fire blight disease

    Concurrent Multilocular Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma and Leiomyoma in the Same Kidney: Previously Unreported Association

    We present an unusual case of concurrent occurrence of a multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma and a leiomyoma in the same kidney of a patient with no evident clinical symptoms. A 38-year-old man was found incidentally to have a cystic right renal mass on computed tomography. Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy was performed under a preoperative diagnosis of cystic renal cell carcinoma. Histology revealed a multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma and a leiomyoma. This is the first report of this kind of presentation

    Securing Equal Work Opportunities: Korea’s Mandatory Quota Policy and Training to Promote Employment of People with Disabilities

    Park Jeong-gil has severe cerebral palsy. While one might assume that this would limit his employment opportunities, Jeong-gil in fact works as a web designer at an advertising company. He completed a web-design training course at a job training center for people with disabilities, and subsequently found a job through the employment service provided by the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled (KEAD). At work, he benefits from assistive technology devices, including an adjustable desk and special keyboards. He shows that “if an adequate working environment is provided, people with disabilities can surely work.” He receives more than a minimum wage, is enrolled in social security insurance, and pays earned income taxes. Prior to the early 1990s, Park Jeong-gil’s situation would have been unlikely, as people with disabilities encountered significant difficulties in finding employment. In the midst of Korea’s rapid growth, national policy emphasized other arenas of economic development and reconstruction from the Korean War the in early 1950’s and focused less on the welfare and employment of people with disabilities. However, awareness of the rights of people with disabilities increased throughout the 1980s, and especially with the international spotlight brought by the 1988 Seoul Olympics and Paralympics, public interest turned more to this issue. Policymakers responded to growing public calls for greater opportunities for the disabled by passing the ‘Promotion, etc. of Employment of Disabled Persons Act’ in order to increase work opportunities for people with disabilities. The Act created a mandatory employment system that obligated national and local governments, public organizations, and private enterprises of a certain size to hire people with disabilities for a certain proportion of positions (See Table 1). In order to enforce implementation, the Act imposed levies on employers who did not meet the proportion of employees with disabilities. Also, the government established the KEAD in September of 1990 with the mandate to implement the quota system. The implementation of the mandatory employment quota system led to additional job creation of 197,000 jobs in the competitive labor markets. Additionally, 164,000 individuals with disabilities are employed in private companies and central and local governments reaching an actual employment rate 2.14 percentage in 2015

    Anti-inflammatory activity of hydrosols from Tetragonia tetragonoides in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells

    The present study was performed to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of Tetragonia tetragonoides hydro- sols (TTH) and its underlying mechanism in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Gas chromatog- raphy (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry and retention index calculations showed that TTH were mainly com- posed of tetratetracontane (29.5 %), nonacosane (27.6 %), and oleamide (17.1 %). TTH significantly decreased the production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Consistent with these observations, TTH treatment decreased the protein expression levels of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). The molecular mechanism of its anti-inflamma- tory activity was found to be associated with inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of NF-κB 65. Furthermore, TTH markedly suppressed the LPS-induced phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Taken together, these data indicate that TTH exerts an anti-inflam- matory activity by inhibiting the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells

    A Review of Double-Walled and Triple-Walled Carbon Nanotube Synthesis and Applications

    Double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs and TWNTs) consist of coaxially-nested two and three single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). They act as the geometrical bridge between SWNTs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), providing an ideal model for studying the coupling interactions between different shells in MWNTs. Within this context, this article comprehensively reviews various synthetic routes of DWNTs’ and TWNTs’ production, such as arc discharge, catalytic chemical vapor deposition and thermal annealing of pea pods (i.e., SWNTs encapsulating fullerenes). Their structural features, as well as promising applications and future perspectives are also discussed.
