    Numerical Study of the Correspondence Between the Dissipative and Fixed Energy Abelian Sandpile Models

    We consider the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on the large square lattice with a single dissipative site (sink). Particles are added by one per unit time at random sites and the resulting density of particles is calculated as a function of time. We observe different scenarios of evolution depending on the value of initial uniform density (height) h0=0,1,2,3h_0=0,1,2,3. During the first stage of the evolution, the density of particles increases linearly. Reaching a critical density ρc(h0)\rho_c(h_0), the system changes its behavior sharply and relaxes exponentially to the stationary state of the ASM with ρs=25/8\rho_s=25/8. We found numerically that ρc(0)=ρs\rho_c(0)=\rho_s and ρc(h0>0)ρs\rho_c(h_0>0) \neq \rho_s. Our observations suggest that the equality ρc=ρs\rho_c=\rho_s holds for more general initial conditions with non-positive heights. In parallel with the ASM, we consider the conservative fixed-energy Abelian sandpile model (FES). The extensive Monte-Carlo simulations for h0=0,1,2,3h_0=0,1,2,3 have confirmed that in the limit of large lattices ρc(h0)\rho_c(h_0) coincides with the threshold density ρth(h0)\rho_{th}(h_0) of FES. Therefore, ρth(h0)\rho_{th}(h_0) can be identified with ρs\rho_s if the FES starts its evolution with non-positive uniform height h00h_0 \leq 0.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

    Quasinormal modes and late-time tails in the background of Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string: scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations

    We have studied the quasinormal modes and the late-time tail behaviors of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in the Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string. Although the metric is locally identical to that of the Schwarzschild black hole so that the presence of the string will not imprint in the motion of test particles, we found that quasinormal modes and the late-time tails can reflect physical signatures of the cosmic string. Compared with the scalar and electromagnetic fields, the gravitational perturbation decays slower, which could be more interesting to disclose the string effect in this background.Comment: 17 pages; 7 figure

    Theoretical Study of Corundum as an Ideal Gate Dielectric Material for Graphene Transistors

    Using physical insights and advanced first-principles calculations, we suggest that corundum is an ideal gate dielectric material for graphene transistors. Clean interface exists between graphene and Al-terminated (or hydroxylated) Al2O3 and the valence band offsets for these systems are large enough to create injection barrier. Remarkably, a band gap of {\guillemotright} 180 meV can be induced in graphene layer adsorbed on Al-terminated surface, which could realize large ON/OFF ratio and high carrier mobility in graphene transistors without additional band gap engineering and significant reduction of transport properties. Moreover, the band gaps of graphene/Al2O3 system could be tuned by an external electric field for practical applications

    A comparative study of frequency of postnatal depression among subjects with normal and caesarean deliveries

    Background: Prevalence of postnatal depression (PND) is 12-15%. Recent studies are equivocal about the earlier inference that PND is higher among caesarian than normal delivery. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of PND among the Indian women and the association between the mode of delivery and PND. Material and method: Fifty subjects each; having delivered normally and by caesarian section was chosen. All the women were within 3 months post delivery and could understand Kannada language. Those who consented were asked to complete the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Those found to have scores suggestive of depression on EPDS were assessed for depression according to ICD-10. The data was analyzed using paired t test and chi square test. Result and conclusion: Among Post caesarean subjects, depression was diagnosed in 20% (n=10) as compared to 16% (n=8) in subjects that delivered normally. However there was no significant difference in the frequency of depression among the two groups. Due to the small sample size the results cannot be generalized

    Assessing the influence of the Merzbacher Lake outburst floods on discharge using the hydrological model SWIM in the Aksu headwaters, Kyrgyzstan/NW China

    Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) often have a significant impact on downstream users. Including their effects in hydrological models, identifying past occurrences and assessing their potential impacts are challenges for hydrologists working in mountainous catchments. The regularly outbursting Merzbacher Lake is located in the headwaters of the Aksu River, the most important source of water discharge to the Tarim River, northwest China. Modelling its water resources and the evaluation of potential climate change impacts on river discharge are indispensable for projecting future water availability for the intensively cultivated river oases downstream of the Merzbacher Lake and along the Tarim River. The semi-distributed hydrological model SWIM was calibrated to the outlet station Xiehela on the Kumarik River, by discharge the largest tributary to the Aksu River. The glacial lake outburst floods add to the difficulties of modelling this high-mountain, heavily glaciated catchment with poor data coverage and quality. The aims of the study are to investigate the glacier lake outburst floods using a modelling tool. Results include a two-step model calibration of the Kumarik catchment, an approach for the identification of the outburst floods using the measured gauge data and the modelling results and estimations of the outburst flood volumes. Results show that a catchment model can inform GLOF investigations by providing ‘normal’ (i.e. without the outburst floods) catchment discharge. The comparison of the simulated and observed discharge proves the occurrence of GLOFs and highlights the influences of the GLOFs on the downstream water balance. © 2013 The Authors.
