Le groupe de Ostrea (Turkostrea) multicostata Deshayes, 1832

The history of the Ostrea (Turkostrea) multicostata group goes back to the Paleocene and its north african origin seems established now. The most ancient forms of the group, O. (T.) multicostata multicostata and O. (T.) multicostata strictiplicata, were found in the southern confines of Tunisia and Algeria where they manifested themselves simultaneously. In a later Paleocene time, the former produced O. (T.) reili reili and, in the middle Eocene, O. (T.) multicostata strictiplicata was modified in central Tethys to produce a type with a gryphoid umbo, O. (T.) turkestanensis whereas in Africa a second lateral offshoot was separated from it, O. (T.) bogharensis. In the same time, a marginal population of O. (T.) reili reili developed in Senegal and acquired particular characteristics which led the author to separate it into a new subspecies, O. (T.) reili marginalis. Finally, from O. (T.) turkestanensis will derive in the upper Eocene two new forms, Sokolowia esterhazyi kaufmanni and S. esterhazyi esterhazyi, which are Gryphaea homeomorphs. A certain geographical localisation and (or) a change in the life habits of the animal seem to have been the determing factors of speciation within this group.L'histoire du groupe de Ostrea (Turkostrea) multicostata remonte au Paléocène et son origine nord-africaine paraît maintenant établie. Les plus anciennes formes du groupe, O. (T.) multicostata multicostata et O. (T.) multicostata stricti-plicata, furent trouvées dans les confins méridionaux de la Tunisie et de l'Algérie où elles se sont manifestées simultanément. A une époque plus récente du Paléocène, la première de ces formes donna naissance à O. (T.) reili reili et, à l'Eocène moyen, O. (T.) multicostata strictiplicata se modifia dans la Téthys centrale en produisant un type à crochet gryphoide, O. (T.) turkestanensis tandis qu'en Afrique se séparait d'elle un second rameau latéral, O. (T.) bogharensis. En même temps, une population marginale de O. (T.) reili reili s'est développée au Sénégal et a acquis des caractéristiques particulières qui conduisent l'auteur à en faire une sous-espèce nouvelle, O. (T.) reili marginalis. Enfin, de O. (T.) turkestanensis dériveront à l'Eocène supérieur deux nouvelles formes, Sokolowia esterhazyi kaufmanni et S. esterhazyi esterhazyi, qui sont des homéomorphes de Gryphaea. Une certaine localisation géographique et (ou) un changement dans les habitudes de vie de l'animal semblent avoir été les facteurs déterminants de la spéciation à l'intérieur de ce groupe.Strougo Amin.
