    A FILTER-FORCING TURBULENCE MODEL FOR LARGE EDDY SIMULATION INCORPORATING THE COMPRESSIBLE POOR MAN\u27S NAVIER--STOKES EQUATIONS

    A new approach to large-eddy simulation (LES) based on the use of explicit spatial filtering combined with backscatter forcing is presented. The forcing uses a discrete dynamical system (DDS) called the compressible ``poor man\u27s\u27\u27 Navier--Stokes (CPMNS) equations. This DDS is derived from the governing equations and is shown to exhibit good spectral and dynamical properties for use in a turbulence model. An overview and critique of existing turbulence theory and turbulence models is given. A comprehensive theoretical case is presented arguing that traditional LES equations contain unresolved scales in terms generally thought to be resolved, and that this can only be solved with explicit filtering. The CPMNS equations are then incorporated into a simple forcing in the OVERFLOW compressible flow code, and tests are done on homogeneous, isotropic, decaying turbulence, a Mach 3 compression ramp, and a Mach 0.8 open cavity. The numerical results validate the general filter-forcing approach, although they also reveal inadequacies in OVERFLOW and that the current approach is likely too simple to be universally applicable.     Masculinity—Femininity

    Six areas of research in developmental and personality psychology concerning sex-typed traits, attitudes, and interests are identified as elements of a common “masculinity-femininity” paradigm needing reexamination. The masculinity-femininity paradigm is defined in relationship to Money and Ehrhardt's model for gender identity differentiation and dimorphism. The six lines of research in the masculinity-femininity paradigm are then briefly critically examined: (1) the measurability of masculinity-femininity as a trait, (2) the identification model of masculinity-femininity development, (3) the effects of father absence on boys, (4) correlates of masculinity-femininity in life adjustment, (5) cross-sex identity in males, and (6) sex role identity problems in black males. The empirical and conceptual problems in each line of research are explored, and are substantial enough to suggest the need for alternate paradigms. Two alternate models for masculinity-femininity development are briefly sketched. First, masculinity-femininity development is analogized to moral development, as a phasic process ideally leading to sex role transcendence and androgyny.     Empirical Legal Studies Before 1940: A Bibliographic Essay

    The modern empirical legal studies movement has well-known antecedents in the law and society and law and economics traditions of the latter half of the 20th century. Less well known is the body of empirical research on legal phenomena from the period prior to World War II. This paper is an extensive bibliographic essay that surveys the English language empirical legal research from approximately 1940 and earlier. The essay is arranged around the themes in the research: criminal justice, civil justice (general studies of civil litigation, auto accident litigation and compensation, divorce, small claims, jurisdiction and procedure, civil juries), debt and bankruptcy, banking, appellate courts, legal needs, legal profession (including legal education), and judicial staffing and selection. Accompanying the essay is an extensive bibliography of research articles, books, and reports

    Wound dressings for a proteolytic-rich environment

    Wound dressings have experienced continuous and significant changes over the years based on the knowledge of the biochemical events associated with chronic wounds. The development goes from natural materials used to just cover and conceal the wound to interactive materials that can facilitate the healing process, addressing specific issues in non-healing wounds. These new types of dressings often relate with the proteolytic wound environment and the bacteria load to enhance the healing. Recently, the wound dressing research is focusing on the replacement of synthetic polymers by natural protein materials to delivery bioactive agents to the wounds. This article provides an overview on the novel protein-based wound dressings such as silk fibroin keratin and elastin. The improved properties of these dressings, like the release of antibiotics and growth factors, are discussed. The different types of wounds and the effective parameters of healing process will be reviewed

    Life Cycle Analysis of School Lunch Waste

    This project presents a life cycle analysis of the solid waste generated by local K-12 schools. We focus primarily on the waste produced during meal periods, locate the “pain points” in the waste stream, and provide alternatives and recommendations. Specifically, we analyze the waste generated at South Junior High School and Timberline High School. In performing our waste audit, we separated the waste by similar categories and quantified the amount of waste by volume. Our analysis of the waste stream found that many of the waste products are lightweight and have a high volume to weight ratio. This is problematic because Republic Services (the waste collection agency) charges by a fixed volume instead of by weight. The greatest pain point is the extensive use of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS, or plastic #6) which occupies a large volume of space, does not biodegrade and is often confused for food by animals, causing a painful death. We present alternatives to EPS, including mushroom mycelium plates, sugarcane-bagasse plates, plastic serving baskets, and ceramic trays, all of which present a much lower environmental impact
