The Highway of Stolen Innocence: Sex Trafficking in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Get PDF
In this study I looked to examine the causes of sex trafficking in Sub-Saharan Africa. Pulling data from the World Bank, Human Development Reports, the U.S. Department of State, and international organizations like the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women and the International Justice Mission, I examined five potential causes – corruption, lack of information, economic inequality, gender discrimination, and, finally, culture, hypothesizing that gender discrimination and culture are the two factors most directly linked to the problem. I used correlations and a multiple linear regression model to show the relationships between the first four of my independent variables and the extent of sex trafficking in the region, using qualitative data from Nigeria and South Africa to bolster these relationships, fill in the gaps in the data, and examine culture. Essentially, I show that until there is more research conducted, we still cannot be sure as to what exactly causes sex trafficking; however, culture definitely aids in its perpetuation. Since there are huge holes in the data out there, I explain that sex trafficking needs to be studied more if this world is ever to see it on the decline

The present thesis is entitled: “A History of Missouri Synod Work in Japan. It gives a brief history of the work done by members of the Missouri Synod in Japan itself from September, 1948, to January, 1953. In order that this thesis might give a more complete picture, Chapter II will be devoted to an overview of the past activities of the Missouri Synod which led to the opening of the field in Japan in 1948. For a more detailed picture of those activities, the reader would do well to consult the B.D. thesis mentioned above. This overview will be followed by a discussion of the survey trip to Japan made by Dr. O.H. Schmidt, Executive Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, including the arrival of the Rev. William J. Danker and the beginnings of his work

Childhood Obesity: Adding Metformin to Lifestyle Modification for Weight Reduction

    Get PDF
One of the most challenging health conditions primary care providers face is combating the ever-rising incidence of obesity, especially among children. The objective of this literature review is to determine the effects of metformin implemented in addition to lifestyle modification for the treatment of childhood obesity. Efficacy, to include change in weight, BMI, insulin resistance, and overall safety of metformin was studied. The online databases searched in this review were PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and CINAHL. Literature chosen for review included randomized control trials, meta-analysis, and systematic reviews published between 2015 and 2020. Much of the studied research indicates positive effects of metformin for weight loss when added to a structured lifestyle modification plan, however, improvement in insulin resistance remains controversial. Safety analysis reveals metformin to be mostly well-tolerated among pediatric patients, with known gastrointestinal side effects being the most common adverse event. While some current research exhibits promising results for weight management, more research must be done to determine the most effective dose and treatment program length
