<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Flap necrosis and epidermolysis occurs in 18-30% of all mastectomies. Complications may be prevented by intra-operative detection of ischemia. Currently, no technique enables quantitative valuation of mastectomy skin perfusion. Optical Diffusion Imaging Spectroscopy (ViOptix T.Ox Tissue Oximeter) measures the ratio of oxyhemoglobin to deoxyhemoglobin over a 1 脳 1 cm area to obtain a non-invasive measurement of perfusion (StO2).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study evaluates the ability of ViOptix T.Ox Tissue Oximeter to predict mastectomy flap necrosis. StO2 measurements were taken at five points before and at completion of dissection in 10 patients. Data collected included: demographics, tumor size, flap length/thickness, co-morbidities, procedure length, and wound complications.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One patient experienced mastectomy skin flap necrosis. Five patients underwent immediate reconstruction, including the patient with necrosis. Statistically significant factors contributing to necrosis included reduction in medial flap StO2 (p = 0.0189), reduction in inferior flap StO2 (p = 0.003), and flap length (p = 0.009).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>StO2 reductions may be utilized to identify impaired perfusion in mastectomy skin flaps.</p

Wsp贸艂czesna robotyka rozwija si臋 bardzo dynamicznie. Coraz wi臋cej os贸b prywatnych i in偶ynier贸w konstruuje r贸偶nego rodzaju pojazdy mobilne. Dlatego autorzy niniejszego referatu postawili sobie nast臋puj膮c膮 tez臋: mo偶liwa jest budowa lataj膮cego robota mobilnego na bazie kontrolera o niskiej mocy obliczeniowej oraz prostego regulatora, i podj臋li si臋 jej udowodnienia.A quadrocopter is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. The development of the quadrocopter is caused by their use not only by the military or rescue services, but also by civilians for the most unusual tasks such as cleaning bot, pesticide sprayer for vast fields of crops or respraying paint on lines on the roads. Therefore, the authors of the paper undertook to build a flying mobile robot based on low computing power controller and simple speed regulator. The paper presents a prototype of a flying robot, purposely equipped with a weak 8-bit microcontroller and a simple regulator, in order to check the possibility of proper regulation and flight control. The constructed robot consists of: a support frame, four engines fitted with propellers and motor controllers. The measurement system is based on an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The final version of the robot is controlled by two 8-bit microcontrollers. The constructed robot test results, such as: 15-minute flight time, the steady-state error of less than 1掳 and casual smooth maneuvering and flight control , proved that it is possible to realize a quadrocopter flight control system using low computational power microcontrollers and a simple cascade controller

Infrared spectra of basal cell carcinomas are distinct from non-tumor-bearing skin components

Infrared spectroscopy, by probing the molecular vibration of chemical bonds, directly indicates tissue biochemistry. An expanding body of literature suggests that infrared spectra distinguish diseased from normal tissue. The authors used infrared spectroscopy to examine basal cell carcinoma to explore distinctive characteristics of basal cell carcinoma versus normal skin samples and other skin neoplasms. Spectra of epidermis, tumor, follicle sheath, and dermis were acquired from unstained frozen sections, and analyzed qualitatively, by t-tests and by linear discriminant analyses. Dermal spectra were significantly different from the other skin components mainly due to absorptions from collagen in dermis. Spectra of normal epidermis and basal cell carcinoma were significantly different by virtue of subtle differences in protein structure and nucleic acid content. Linear discriminant analysis characterized spectra as arising from basal cell carcinoma, epidermis, or follicle sheath with 98.7% accuracy. Use of linear discriminant analysis accurately classified spectra as arising from epidermis overlying basal cell carcinoma versus epidermis overlying nontumor-bearing skin in 98.0% of cases. Spectra of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, nevi, and malignant melanoma were qualitatively similar. Distinction of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanocytic lesions by linear discriminant analyses, however, was 93.5% accurate. Therefore, spectral separation of abnormal versus normal tissue was achieved with high sensitivity and specificity, which points to infrared spectroscopy as a potentially useful screening tool for cutaneous neoplasia.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye

    Phytoserotonin: A review

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; SER) is one of the well-studied indoleamine neurotransmitters in vertebrates. Recently SER has also been reported in wide range of plant species. The precise function of SER at the physiological level, particularly growth regulation, flowering, xylem sap exudation, ion permeability and plant morphogenesis in plant system has not been clear. Though SER is found in different parts of plant species including leaves, stems, roots, fruits and seeds, the quantity of SER within plant tissues varies widely. SER has been recently shown as a plant hormone in view of its auxin-like activity. This brief review provides an overview of SER biosynthesis, localization, its role in plant morphogenesis and possible physiological functions in plants. This would certainly help to elucidate further the multiple roles of SER in plant morphogenesis. In the future it may form the basis for studies on involvement of SER in cellular signaling mechanisms in plants. Apart from these gaps in understanding the role of SER in ontogeny of plant physiology and ecological, adaptations have been emphasized. Thus, overall perspectives in this area of research and its possible implications have been presented
