Derivation of the Rules of Quantum Mechanics from Information-Theoretic Axioms
Conventional quantum mechanics with a complex Hilbert space and the Born Rule
is derived from five axioms describing properties of probability distributions
for the outcome of measurements. Axioms I,II,III are common to quantum
mechanics and hidden variable theories. Axiom IV recognizes a phenomenon, first
noted by Turing and von Neumann, in which the increase in entropy resulting
from a measurement is reduced by a suitable intermediate measurement. This is
shown to be impossible for local hidden variable theories. Axiom IV, together
with the first three, almost suffice to deduce the conventional rules but allow
some exotic, alternatives such as real or quaternionic quantum mechanics. Axiom
V recognizes a property of the distribution of outcomes of random measurements
on qubits which holds only in the complex Hilbert space model. It is then shown
that the five axioms also imply the conventional rules for all dimensions.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure
The stromal cell–derived factor-1α/CXCR4 ligand–receptor axis is critical for progenitor survival and migration in the pancreas
The SDF-1α/CXCR4 ligand/chemokine receptor pair is required for appropriate patterning during ontogeny and stimulates the growth and differentiation of critical cell types. Here, we demonstrate SDF-1α and CXCR4 expression in fetal pancreas. We have found that SDF-1α and its receptor CXCR4 are expressed in islets, also CXCR4 is expressed in and around the proliferating duct epithelium of the regenerating pancreas of the interferon (IFN) γ–nonobese diabetic mouse. We show that SDF-1α stimulates the phosphorylation of Akt, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and Src in pancreatic duct cells. Furthermore, migration assays indicate a stimulatory effect of SDF-1α on ductal cell migration. Importantly, blocking the SDF-1α/CXCR4 axis in IFNγ-nonobese diabetic mice resulted in diminished proliferation and increased apoptosis in the pancreatic ductal cells. Together, these data indicate that the SDF-1α–CXCR4 ligand receptor axis is an obligatory component in the maintenance of duct cell survival, proliferation, and migration during pancreatic regeneration

An Exactly Solvable Model for the Integrability-Chaos Transition in Rough Quantum Billiards
A central question of dynamics, largely open in the quantum case, is to what
extent it erases a system's memory of its initial properties. Here we present a
simple statistically solvable quantum model describing this memory loss across
an integrability-chaos transition under a perturbation obeying no selection
rules. From the perspective of quantum localization-delocalization on the
lattice of quantum numbers, we are dealing with a situation where every lattice
site is coupled to every other site with the same strength, on average. The
model also rigorously justifies a similar set of relationships recently
proposed in the context of two short-range-interacting ultracold atoms in a
harmonic waveguide. Application of our model to an ensemble of uncorrelated
impurities on a rectangular lattice gives good agreement with ab initio

Recent advances on information transmission and storage assisted by noise
The interplay between nonlinear dynamic systems and noise has proved to be of
great relevance in several application areas. In this presentation, we focus on
the areas of information transmission and storage. We review some recent
results on information transmission through nonlinear channels assisted by
noise. We also present recent proposals of memory devices in which noise plays
an essential role. Finally, we discuss new results on the influence of noise in

Prevention and management of excessive gestational weight gain: a survey of overweight and obese pregnant women
Background - Excessive gestational weight gain is associated with adverse infant, childhood and maternal outcomes and research to develop interventions to address this issue is ongoing. The views of women on gestational weight gain and the resources they would consider helpful in addressing this are however largely unknown. This survey aimed to determine the views of newly pregnant women, living in areas of social disadvantage, on 1) their current body weight and potential gestational weight gain and 2) the resources or interventions they would consider helpful in preventing excessive gestational weight gain.
Methods - A convenience sample of overweight and obese pregnant women living in Fife, UK, were invited to complete a short anonymised questionnaire at their 12 week booking visit.
Results - 428 women, BMI>25 kg/m2, completed the questionnaire. Fifty-four per cent of respondents were obese (231) and 62% were living in areas of mild to moderate deprivation. Over three-quarters of participants felt dissatisfied with their current weight (81%). The majority of women (60%) expressed some concern about potential weight gain. Thirty-nine percent were unconcerned about weight gain during their pregnancy, including 34 women (19%) who reported having retained weight gained in earlier pregnancies. Amongst those concerned about weight gain advice on physical activity (41%) and access to sports/leisure facilities were favoured resources (36%). Fewer women (12%) felt that group sessions on healthy eating or attending a clinic for individualised advice (14%) would be helpful. "Getting time off work" was the most frequently cited barrier (48%) to uptake of resources other than leaflets.
Conclusions- These data suggest a lack of awareness amongst overweight and obese women regarding excessive gestational weight gain. Monitoring of gestational weight gain, and approaches for its management, should be formally integrated into routine antenatal care. Barriers to the uptake of resources to address weight gain are numerous and must be considered in the design of future interventions and services
An investigation of psychological, social and environmental correlates of obesity and weight gain in young women
Objectives: This study explored the biological, psychological, social and environmental correlates of young women\u27s current weight and retrospective 2-year weight change. Methods: A total of 790 young women (mean age 26.8 years), sampled from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women\u27s Health, provided self-reported data on their height and weight, sociodemographics and a range of biological, psychological, social and environmental variables. Results: Several variables from all domains (biological, psychological, social support and environmental) were correlated with higher body mass index, and less strongly greater 2-year weight change. Key correlates included the tendency to never put on weight, no matter what; self-efficacy for avoiding weight gain, and for healthy eating; attention paid to weight; family support and friends\u27 support/sabotage of physical activity/healthy eating; and perceived difficulty of taking the stairs rather than the elevator as part of the daily routine. Conclusions: Intervention strategies aimed at reducing weight gain and obesity may need to focus on social and environmental, as well as psychological factors; however, further research is necessary to confirm these findings given that a number of hypothesized associations were not observed.<br /
