    A Building Program Study

    The purpose of this field study is to explore the need for a building program, to give recommendations for the best building site and why, and to check the feelings of the community on the passing of a referendum in Community Unit #3, Palestine, Illinois. This study included an evaluation of both the elementary and the high school buildings. This included the condition and availability of classroom space and special education space. The best possible site for a building program and reasons for the choice site were considered. The community of Palestine in the past has passed referendums for building projects, if the school has been capable of showing a real need for the building. It is the belief of this author that a referendum could pass, but it will take much research and communication between the school personnel and the community. The board of education and administration must be definite on what they want and be convinced that it is the best building program possible, before they try to persuade the citizens of the community to support the program. The reason for the consideration of a building program is a result of all the mandated programs and the emergence of girls athletics. The Palestine Community Unit Schools are located in the village of Palestine, Illinois, a town situated in the south eastern area of Crawford County. The Palestine Community Unit District #3 is a consolidated unit school district with the assessed valuation of 10,599,455andthebondingabilityof10,599,455 and the bonding ability of 1,486,764. The town of Palestine has a population of about 1,650 people. The Unit #3 District has a population of about 612 students of which 190 are presently enrolled in grades 9 through 12. Many parents live in the Palestine area and commute to Robinson which is 7 miles west of Palestine. The rural areas have a diversified type of agriculture, and business in the village is geared largely as supportive of agriculture enterprise. Palestine school district is considered 100% rural. The district has no private or parochial schools. The community is composed primarily of middle class citizens--a stable community of citizens who take pride in their homes, schools, and businesses. A large portion of this population is native to the Palestine area. However, current trends seem to indicate increased movement from the metropolitan areas. Most of the residents are commuter oriented-working in nearby towns. The working population seems to be primarily skilled and semi-skilled laborers. The main education level of the people of the Palestine Community has risen sharply within the last five years. This increase in education level is due in part, to the courses offered at Lincoln Trail Junior College and the courses offered at Palestine through the continuing education program. The high school student enrollment has been stable over the last ten years and by all indications it will remain stable for at least the next five years. Realizing that quality education can not exist without good facilities, high morale on the part of the faculty, and contentment, pride, and a learning attitude on the part of the students, this writer feels that the citizens of this community would support a building program, if they could be assured that it would solve the majority of the problems that the school district now has

    Adaptive Antenna Arrays for Ad-Hoc Millimetre-Wave Wireless Communications

    New technologies that employ millimetre-wave frequency bands to achieve high speed wireless links are gaining more attention (Dyadyuk et. al., 2007, 2009b, 2010a; Hirata et. al., 2006; Lockie & Peck, 2009; Kasugi et. al., 2009; Wells, 2009) due to increasing demand for wideband wireless communications. Very wide uncongested spectrum is available in the E—bands (71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz) recently allocated for wireless communications in USA, Europe, Korea, Russia and Australia. The E-band provides an opportunity for line-of – sight (LOS) links with higher data rates, well suited for fibre replacement and backhaul applications. Future mobile and ad-hoc communications networks will require higher bandwidth and longer range. An ad-hoc or mobile (e.g. inter-aircraft) network that relies on high gain antennas also requires beam scanning. Adaptive antenna arrays have found a wide rage of applications and are becoming essential parts of wireless communications systems (Abbaspour-Tamijani & Sarabandi, 2003; Do-Hong & Russer, 2004; Gross, 2005; Guo, 2004; Krim & Viberg, 1996; Mailloux, 2005, 2007; Rogstad et al., 2003; Singh et al., 2008). While the spectrum available in the millimetre-wave frequency bands enables multi-gigabit-per second data rates, the practically achievable communication range is limited by several factors. These include the higher atmospheric attenuation at these frequencies and limited output power of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) (Doan et al., 2004; Dyadyuk et al., 2008a; Kasper et al., 2009; Floyd et al., 2007; Reynolds et. al., 2006; Vamsi et. al., 2005, Zirath et al., 2004) due to physical constraints. Therefore, the performance of the ad-hoc or mobile millimetre-wave networks requires enhancement by using spatial power combining antenna arrays

    Elastic turbulence in curvilinear flows of polymer solutions

    Following our first report (A. Groisman and V. Steinberg, \sl Nature 405\bf 405, 53 (2000)) we present an extended account of experimental observations of elasticity induced turbulence in three different systems: a swirling flow between two plates, a Couette-Taylor (CT) flow between two cylinders, and a flow in a curvilinear channel (Dean flow). All three set-ups had high ratio of width of the region available for flow to radius of curvature of the streamlines. The experiments were carried out with dilute solutions of high molecular weight polyacrylamide in concentrated sugar syrups. High polymer relaxation time and solution viscosity ensured prevalence of non-linear elastic effects over inertial non-linearity, and development of purely elastic instabilities at low Reynolds number (Re) in all three flows. Above the elastic instability threshold, flows in all three systems exhibit features of developed turbulence. Those include: (i)randomly fluctuating fluid motion excited in a broad range of spatial and temporal scales; (ii) significant increase in the rates of momentum and mass transfer (compared to those expected for a steady flow with a smooth velocity profile). Phenomenology, driving mechanisms, and parameter dependence of the elastic turbulence are compared with those of the conventional high Re hydrodynamic turbulence in Newtonian fluids.Comment: 23 pages, 26 figure

    Oscillations of a solid sphere falling through a wormlike micellar fluid

    We present an experimental study of the motion of a solid sphere falling through a wormlike micellar fluid. While smaller or lighter spheres quickly reach a terminal velocity, larger or heavier spheres are found to oscillate in the direction of their falling motion. The onset of this instability correlates with a critical value of the velocity gradient scale Γc∌1\Gamma_{c}\sim 1 s−1^{-1}. We relate this condition to the known complex rheology of wormlike micellar fluids, and suggest that the unsteady motion of the sphere is caused by the formation and breaking of flow-induced structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Exclusive Photoproduction of the Cascade (Xi) Hyperons

    We report on the first measurement of exclusive Xi-(1321) hyperon photoproduction in gamma p --> K+ K+ Xi- for 3.2 < E(gamma) < 3.9 GeV. The final state is identified by the missing mass in p(gamma,K+ K+)X measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant number of the ground-state Xi-(1321)1/2+, and have estimated the total cross section for its production. We have also observed the first excited state Xi-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Xi's. We discuss the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Xi5-- and Xi5+ pentaquarks.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Definitive intensity modulated proton re-irradiation for lung cancer in the immunotherapy era

    IntroductionAs immunotherapy has improved distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), isolated locoregional recurrences have increased. However, management of locoregional recurrences can be challenging. We report our institutional experience with definitive intent re-irradiation using Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT).MethodRetrospective cohort study of recurrent or second primary NSCLC or LS-SCLC treated with IMPT. Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used for time-to-event analyses.Results22 patients were treated from 2019 to 2021. After first course of radiation (median 60 Gy, range 45-70 Gy), 45% received adjuvant immunotherapy. IMPT re-irradiation began a median of 28.2 months (8.8-172.9 months) after initial radiotherapy. The median IMPT dose was 60 GyE (44-60 GyE). 36% received concurrent chemotherapy with IMPT and 18% received immunotherapy after IMPT. The median patient’s IMPT lung mean dose was 5.3 GyE (0.9-13.9 GyE) and 5 patients had cumulative esophagus max dose &gt;100 GyE with 1-year overall survival (OS) 68%, 1-year local control 80%, 1-year progression free survival 45%, and 1-year DMFS 60%. Higher IMPT (HR 1.4; 95% CI 1.1-1.7, p=0.01) and initial radiotherapy mean lung doses (HR 1.3; 95% CI 1.0-1.6, p=0.04) were associated with worse OS. Two patients developed Grade 3 pneumonitis or dermatitis, one patient developed Grade 2 pneumonitis, and seven patients developed Grade 1 toxicity.
