    Affordance-Experimentation-Actualization Theory in Artificial Intelligence Research – A Predictive Maintenance Story

    Artificial intelligence currently counts among the most prominent digital technologies and promises to generate significant business value in the future. Despite a growing body of knowledge, research could further benefit from incorporating technological features, human actors, and organizational goals into the examination of artificial intelligence-enabled systems. This integrative perspective is crucial for effective implementation. Our study intends to fill this gap by introducing affordance-experimentation-actualization theory to artificial intelligence research. In doing so, we conduct a case study on the implementation of predictive maintenance using affordance-experimentation-actualization theory as our theoretical lens. From our study, we find further evidence for the existence of the experimentation phase during which organizations make new technologies ready for effective use. We propose extending the experimentation phase with the activity of ‘conceptual exploration’ in order to make affordance-experimentation-actualization theory applicable to a broader range of technologies and the domain of AI-enabled systems in particular

    They Said: An Analysis of State Level Sexual and Gender Harassment Data

    Occurrences of sexual harassment are usually studied at the job site level. Yet there is evidence to indicate that sexual harassment occurs in a number of disparate job settings and affects all types of victims. In this research we document the incidence and attributes of sexual harassment in a state level population using four years of a specially devised victimization survey. In this paper we present the findings regarding the victims, offenders, and the nature and prevalence of such harassment in a rural mountain state. We found that for all four years, almost 20% of working people in Idaho experienced some form of sexual or gender harassment each year. Moreover, the rate of that harassment remained somewhat constant throughout the study periods. We also found that young, unmarried women were the most likely victims of sexual or gender harassment in this statewide study

    Loss of TIMP3 exacerbates atherosclerosis in ApoE null mice.

    Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 3 (TIMP3) is a stromal protein that inhibits the activity of various proteases and receptors. We have previously shown TIMP3 to be downregulated in metabolic and inflammatory disorders, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. We have now generated an ApoE(-/-)Timp3(-/-) mouse model in which, through the use of genetics, metabolomics and in-vivo phenotypical analysis we investigated the role of TIMP3 in the development of atherosclerosis. En face aorta analysis and aortic root examination showed that ApoE(-/-)Timp3(-/-) mice show increased atherosclerosis with increased infiltration of macrophages into the plaque. Serum concentration of MCP-1 were elevated in the serum of ApoE(-/-)Timp3(-/-) mice coupled with an expansion of the inflammatory (M1) Gr1+ macrophages, both in the circulation and within the aortic tissue. Targeted analysis of metabolites revealed a trend to reduced short chain acylcarnitines. Our study shows that lack of TIMP3 increases inflammation and polarizes macrophages towards a more inflammatory phenotype resulting in increased atherosclerosis.
