Eating and stress at work: The need for public health promotion intervention and an opportunity for food product development?
YesGiven the large proportion of time spent at work, it is surprising
that relatively little research has been devoted to understanding
food selection in the work place. A growing
literature suggests that stress, particularly occupation-related
stress, negatively impacts upon food choice and may
contribute to population ill health. The consensus is that
work stress induces consumption of foods that are high in
sugar, fat and salt which are likely to contribute to overweight
and have long-term detriment to health. The interaction between
stress and eating appears to vary by sex and type of
work undertaken. This paper argues an imperative for further
longitudinal and intervention research to understand interactions
between food choice and stress in the work context
with a view to the design of dietary health promotion and
the development of nourishing food products targeted at those
experiencing stress and which could be made accessible in the
work place
Caught in a āspiralā. Barriers to healthy eating and dietary health promotion needs from the perspective of unemployed young people and their service providers
NoThe number of young people in Europe who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) is increasing.
Given that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to have diets of poor nutritional
quality, this exploratory study sought to understand barriers and facilitators to healthy eating and dietary
health promotion needs of unemployed young people aged 16ā20 years. Three focus group discussions
were held with young people (n = 14). Six individual interviews and one paired interview with service
providers (n = 7). Data were recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically content analysed. Themes
were then fitted to social cognitive theory (SCT). Despite understanding of the principles of healthy eating,
a āspiralā of interrelated social, economic and associated psychological problems was perceived to render
food and health of little value and low priority for the young people. The story related by the young people
and corroborated by the service providers was of a lack of personal and vicarious experience with food.
The proliferation and proximity of fast food outlets and the high perceived cost of āhealthyā compared
to ājunkā food rendered the young people low in self-efficacy and perceived control to make healthier
food choices. Agency was instead expressed through consumption of junk food and drugs. Both the young
people and service providers agreed that for dietary health promotion efforts to succeed, social problems
needed to be addressed and agency encouraged through (individual and collective) active engagement
of the young people themselves
Factors determining the integration of nutritional genomics into clinical practice by registered dietitians
YesPersonalized nutrition has the potential to improve health, prevent disease and reduce healthcare expenditure. Whilst research hints at positive consumer attitudes towards personalized nutrition that draws upon lifestyle, phenotypic and genotypic data, little is known about the degree to which registered dietitians (RD) are engaged in the delivery of such services. This review sought to determine possible factors associated with the integration of the emerging science of Nutritional Genomics (NGx) into the clinical practice setting by practicing registered dietitians.
Scope
Search of online databases (Pubmed; National Library of Medicine; Cochrane Library; Ovid Medline) was conducted on material published from January 2000 to December 2014. Studies that sampled practicing dietitians and investigated integration or application of NGx and genetics knowledge into practice were eligible. Articles were assessed according to the American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist.
Key findings
Application of nutritional genomics in practice has been limited. Reluctance to integrate NGx into practice is associated with low awareness of NGx, a lack of confidence in the science surrounding NGx and skepticism toward Direct to consumer (DTC) products. Successful application to practice was associated with knowledge about NGx, having confidence in the science, a positive attitude toward NGx, access to DTC products, a supportive working environment, working in the clinical setting rather than the public health domain and being in private rather than public practice.
Conclusions
There is a need to provide RGs with a supportive working environment that provides ongoing training in NGx and which is integrated with clinical practice
Correlates of food choice in unemployed young people: The role of demographic factors, self-efficacy, food involvement, food poverty and physical activity.
yesAssociations between socio-demographic and psychological factors and food choice patterns were explored in unemployed young people who constitute a vulnerable group at risk of poor dietary health. Volunteers (N = 168), male (n = 97) and female (n = 71), aged 15ā25 years were recruited through United Kingdom (UK) community-based organisations serving young people not in education training or employment (NEET). Survey questionnaire enquired on food poverty, physical activity and measured responses to the Food Involvement Scale (FIS), Food Self-Efficacy Scale (FSS) and a 19-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). A path analysis was undertaken to explore associations between age, gender, food poverty, age at leaving school, food self-efficacy (FS-E), food involvement (FI) (kitchen; uninvolved; enjoyment), physical activity and the four food choice patterns (junk food; healthy; fast food; high fat). FS-E was strong in the model and increased with age. FS-E was positively associated with more frequent choice of healthy food and less frequent junk or high fat food (having controlled for age, gender and age at leaving school). FI (kitchen and enjoyment) increased with age. Higher FI (kitchen) was associated with less frequent junk food and fast food choice. Being uninvolved with food was associated with more frequent fast food choice. Those who left school after the age of 16 years reported more frequent physical activity. Of the indirect effects, younger individuals had lower FI (kitchen) which led to frequent junk and fast food choice. Females who were older had higher FI (enjoyment) which led to less frequent fast food choice. Those who had left school before the age of 16 had low food involvement (uninvolved) which led to frequent junk food choice. Multiple indices implied that data were a good fit to the model which indicated a need to enhance food self-efficacy and encourage food involvement in order to improve dietary health among these disadvantaged young people
Assessment of health claims, content, and safety of herbal supplements containing Ginkgo biloba
Background: European Regulation 1924/2006 states that all health claims made on foods need to be substantiated scientifically. Objective: To apply the PASSCLAIM criteria for the scientific substantiation of health claims on foods to herbal supplements containing Ginkgo biloba. Evaluation of three selected claimed health effects for G. biloba (improvement of blood circulation, improvement of symptoms of old age, and improvement of memory) was achieved through review of publicly available scientific data. A total of 35 human intervention studies were evaluated. Commercially available products claimed to contain mainly G. biloba (N=29) were randomly sampled in the Netherlands and analyzed for their content on ginkgo extract. Also, a toxicological risk assessment was performed. Results: The three selected health claims investigated could not be substantiated. This was mainly because of a lack of data from studies in healthy volunteers. In most studies results performed with a 24% standardized G. biloba extract were described. However, our chemical analysis showed that 25 of the 29 sampled products did not contain the required minimum 24% standardized extract. Moreover, in most preparations the content of substances typical for G. biloba did not conform to what was declared on the label. Since toxicity data for G. biloba are very limited, a safety limit could not be established. Conclusions : Evidence is lacking for three health claims of herbal products with G. biloba. Neither safety nor efficacy can be guaranteed at the recommended daily dose. The multidisciplinary approach described in this paper provides good insight into issues that are relevant for the evaluation of health claims for herbal food supplements
Donāt mind milk? The role of animal suffering, speciesism, and guilt in the denial of mind and moral status of dairy cows
Reminding meat-eaters that animals are being harmed for meat production, elicits psychological tension about meat consumption. Individuals deal with this tension by either reducing or stopping meat consumption or by denying the mind of food animals, thereby lowering the moral status of animals. It is currently unclear whether similar reactions occur when considering dairy consumption. In a preregistered experiment (N = 345 animal product consumers), we manipulated perceived harm levels inflicted upon dairy cows (higher versus lower) to investigate peopleās use of dairy-related cognitive dissonance reduction strategies. Participants in the high (vs low) harm condition felt more guilty which in turn, was associated with a) lower mind attribution and moral concern for the cow and b) greater intentions to reduce or stop dairy consumption. These effects were especially pronounced for participants higher in speciesism, while among those lower in speciesism, the effects were weaker (on guilt and intentions to change dairy consumption) or non-significant (on mind attribution, moral concern). The findings demonstrate that increased awareness of animal harm in dairy farms, elicits guilt and dissonance reduction reactions similar to meat-related dissonance reactions. Evidence of dairy-related cognitive dissonance highlights the need for a greater research focus on the consumption of animal products other than meat
Perceptions and experiences of early-adopting registered dietitians in integrating nutrigenomics into practice
yesPurpose - This research explores the perceptions and experiences of early adopters of the technology.
Design/Method/Approach - Registered Dietitians (RDĀ“s) (N=14) were recruited from the UK, Canada, South-Africa, Australia, Mexico and Israel. Six qualitative interviews and two focus groups were conducted online using a conference calling platform. Data were recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed.
Findings - Early adopters of Nutrigenomics (NGx) were experienced, self-efficacious RDās who actively sought knowledge of NGx through communication with one another and the broader scientific community. They considered NGx an extension of current practice and believed RDās had the skills to deliver it. Perceived barriers to widening the application of NGx were linked to skepticism among the wider dietetics community. Proliferation of unregulated websites offering tests and diets was considered āpseudoscienceā and detrimental to dietetics fully embracing NGx. The lack of a sustainable public health model for the delivery of NGx was also perceived to hinder progress. Results are discussed with reference to ādiffusion of innovation theoryā.
Originality/Value - The views of RDās who practice NGx have not been previously studied. These data highlight requirements for future dietetic training provision and more inclusive service delivery models. Regulation of NGx services and formal recognition by professional bodies is needed to address the research/practice translation gap
Minding some animals but not others: Strategic attributions of mental capacities and moral worth to animals used for food in pescatarians, vegetarians, and omnivores
While moral concern for animals has become increasingly important for both consumer food choice and food policy makers, previous research demonstrated that meat eaters attribute lower moral status and mental capacities to animals raised for meat compared to non-food animals. The current research investigated whether this strategic flexibility in moral concern and mind perceptions also occurs when considering aquatic food animals and animals used for dairy and egg products, and the degree to which these concerns and perceptions are evident in pescatarians and vegetarians. We compared perceptions (mind attributions and moral concern) of land food animals versus aquatic food animals, and of animals in the meat versus dairy and egg industry between omnivores (n = 122), pescatarians (n = 118), vegetarians (n = 138), vegans (n = 120), and flexitarians (n = 60). Pescatarians scored lower than other dietary groups on moral concern and mind attribution for aquatic animals relative to farmed land animals. Unlike the other dietary groups, pescatarians and vegetarians scored lower on moral concern and mind attribution for dairy than beef cows and for layer chickens than broiler chickens. These findings demonstrate that pescatarians and vegetarians were flexible in their moral thinking about different types of food animals in ways that suited their consumption habits, even when the same animal was evaluated (e.g., dairy vs beef cows). This research highlights the psychological barriers that might prevent people from reducing animal product consumption and may need to be addressed in interventions to encourage transitioning towards more plant-based diets

A survey of breastfeeding attitudes and health locus of control in the Nigerian population
YesBreastfeeding is important to infant health and survival in sub-Saharan Africa. To promote breastfeeding effectively, understanding of psychological factors associated with infant feeding choices is required. This study investigated
breastfeeding attitudes and health locus of control (HLoC) in a Nigerian community sample.
Men and women (N=400) (71% female; mean age 34.2 years/ range 18ā86 years) were recruited through community groups in Nigeria. Self-report survey by questionnaire measured breastfeeding attitudes using the Iowa Infant Feeding
Attitude Scale (IIFAS) and health locus of control using the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLoCs).
IIFAS scores (mean=57.7; sd=7.8) became less favourable with increasing age (p=0.02). Men had higher
IIFAS scores (mean=58.6; sd=7.6) than women (mean=56.6; sd=8.0) indicating more favourable attitudes toward breastfeeding (p=0.02). Women scored higher than men on external chance HLoC (ECHLoC) (p=0.003) and external powerful
others HLoC (EPHLoC) (p=0.02). Increasing age was associated with higher scores on ECHLoC (p<0.01) and EPHLoC
(p<0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis was significant (p<0.001) and explained 7.8% of variance in breastfeeding
attitude. Lower IIFAS scores, reflecting more negative attitudes to breastfeeding, were associated with higher ECHLoC
(p<0.01) and EPOHLoC (p<0.05). Higher IIFAS scores, reflecting more positive attitudes to breastfeeding, were associated
with greater IHLoC (p<0.01). Neither age nor gender were associated with IIFAS scores in the final model.
This implies a need to explore health locus of control when promoting positive attitudes to breastfeeding and
supporting families in breastfeeding advocacy
Effects of zinc supplementation on cognitive function in healthy middle-aged and older adults: the ZENITH study
A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled design was employed to investigate the effects of Zn supplementation on cognitive function in 387 healthy adults aged 55ā87 years. Several measures of visual memory, working memory, attention and reaction time were obtained using the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery at baseline and then after 3 and 6 months of 0 (placebo), 15 or 30 mg Zn/d. Younger adults (70 years), and performance improved with practice on some measures. For two out of eight dependent variables, there were significant interactions indicating a beneficial effect (at 3 months only) of both 15 and 30 mg/d on one measure of spatial working memory and a detrimental effect of 15 mg/d on one measure of attention. Further work is required to establish whether these findings generalise to older adults in poorer mental and physical health and with less adequate Zn intake and status than the present sample
