    Life satisfaction questionnaire (Lisat-9): reliability and validity for patients with acquired brain injury

    The aim of this study was to determine the reliability and discriminant validity of the Dutch version of the life satisfaction questionnaire (Lisat-9 DV) to assess patients with an acquired brain injury. The reliability study used a test-retest design, and the validity study used a cross-sectional design. The setting was the general rehabilitation centre. There were 159 patients over 18 years of age, with an acquired brain injury, in the chronic phase. The main outcome measures were weighted kappa of test and retest data on the nine questions of the Lisat-9 DV and significance levels of differences between subgroups of patients who are expected to differ in terms of Lisat-9 scores, on the basis of other instruments. The results were as follows: the reliability was moderate, with the weighted kappa ranging from 0.41 to 0.64. In terms of validity, subgroups of patients who were expected to differ in terms of the Lisat-9 domains did indeed differ significantly, except for the difference in the Lisat score for 'contact with friends and acquaintances' between subgroups defined by higher or lower scores on the corresponding domain of the Frenchay Activities Index. As there was a plausible explanation for not finding a significant difference between subgroups defined by one of the Frenchay Activities Index domains and significant differences were found between the subgroups defined by other instruments corresponding to the same domain, we conclude that the discriminant validity is good. The reliability was not clearly affected by cognitive disorder or aphasia. The conclusions were that the reliability of the Lisat-9 DV for patients with an acquired brain injury was moderate; the discriminant validity was good

    Prenatal diagnosis by ultrasound in pregnancies at risk for autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease

    Abstract In 15 pregnancies at risk of the autosomal recessive type of polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), there were six recurrences (40%), five of which were diagnosed prenatally between 17 and 26 weeks (mean, 22 weeks). In the remaining affected case, normal kidney size and echogenicity were still present at 30 weeks of gestation. Fetal kidney enlargement and increased echogenicity are the key ultrasonographic signs for the detection of ARPKD. Absent fetal bladder filling and oligohydramnios were only documented in two of the six affected pregnancies. The variability in onset, the intrafamilial variability and the limitations of excluding ARPKD by second trimester ultrasound have to be considered when counselling a couple at risk for this particular disorder

    Stock assessment of Australian east coast Spanish mackerel : Predictions of stock status and reference points

    The stock assessment describes Australia’s east coast Spanish mackerel fishery operating in ocean waters between Cape York Peninsula and northern New South Wales. The species are a large offshore pelagic fish that can live for up to 26 years and weigh in excess of 30 kg. Spanish mackerel reach maturity above the minimum legal size of 75 cm at between two and four years of age. The stock assessment was conducted at the whole stock level and included commercial, charter, recreational and research data from both New South Wales and Queensland. The data included estimates of Spanish mackerel harvest from logbook systems and recreational fishing surveys, catch rates from commercial logbooks and historical surveys of long term commercial fishers, and annual fish age-length compositions. The fishery for east coast Spanish mackerel commenced in the early 1900s. Annual east coast harvests taken by commercial, charter and recreational fishing steadily built to peak at 1000–1300 tonnes (t) per year during the 1970s and 1000–1150 t per year between 1998 and 2003. The estimated annual Spanish mackerel harvest since 2005 reduced to 500–760 t per year. Most fishers harvest Spanish mackerel using line-fishing techniques. Net fishing for Spanish mackerel is illegal. In recent years about 47 per cent, 6 per cent and 47 per cent of annual Spanish mackerel harvests were taken respectively by commercial, charter and recreational fishing across all east coast waters. Population modelling of the data estimated that Spanish mackerel population size in 2016 was between 30–50 per cent of original biomass estimated at the start of the fishery in 1911 (best estimate around 40 per cent biomass). Estimates of recommended sustainable annual harvest of Spanish mackerel for all fishing sectors and east-coast waters ranged between 400 and 800 t. There is presently substantial unfished commercial quota. The current Queensland total allowable commercial catch quota is 574.6 t. If this were to be largely utilised, together with current or increased charter, recreational and New South Wales commercial harvests, then the biomass of the Spanish mackerel population may decline. Such high harvests would result in overfishing and reduce average catch rates longer-term. The results suggested annual harvests of around 550 t (across all sectors) will build the biomass towards the 60 per cent level, consistent with the 2027 biomass targets set in the Queensland Government’s Sustainable Fisheries Strategy. If there is a desire to operate the fishery closer towards 60 per cent biomass for better economic yield and quality of fishing (higher catch rates), then fishing pressure will need to reduce for a period of time to build the fish population to a higher biomass

    Specific pathway abundances in the neonatal calf faecal microbiome are associated with susceptibility to Cryptosporidium parvum infection: a metagenomic analysis.

    Cryptosporidium parvum is the main cause of calf scour worldwide. With limited therapeutic options and research compared to other Apicomplexa, it is important to understand the parasites' biology and interactions with the host and microbiome in order to develop novel strategies against this infection. The age-dependent nature of symptomatic cryptosporidiosis suggests a link to the undeveloped immune response, the immature intestinal epithelium, and its associated microbiota. This led us to hypothesise that specific features of the early life microbiome could predict calf susceptibility to C. parvum infection. In this study, a single faecal swab sample was collected from each calf within the first week of life in a cohort of 346 animals. All 346 calves were subsequently monitored for clinical signs of cryptosporidiosis, and calves that developed diarrhoea were tested for Rotavirus, Coronavirus, E. coli F5 (K99) and C. parvum by lateral flow test (LFT). A retrospective case–control approach was taken whereby a subset of healthy calves (Control group; n = 33) and calves that went on to develop clinical signs of infectious diarrhoea and test positive for C. parvum infection via LFT (Cryptosporidium-positive group; n = 32) were selected from this cohort, five of which were excluded due to low DNA quality. A metagenomic analysis was conducted on the faecal microbiomes of the control group (n = 30) and the Cryptosporidium-positive group (n = 30) prior to infection, to determine features predictive of cryptosporidiosis. Taxonomic analysis showed no significant differences in alpha diversity, beta diversity, and taxa relative abundance between controls and Cryptosporidium-positive groups. Analysis of functional potential showed pathways related to isoprenoid precursor, haem and purine biosynthesis were significantly higher in abundance in calves that later tested positive for C. parvum (q ≤ 0.25). These pathways are either absent or streamlined in the C. parvum parasites. Though the de novo production of isoprenoid precursors, haem and purines are absent, C. parvum has been shown to encode enzymes that catalyse the downstream reactions of these pathway metabolites, indicating that C. parvum may scavenge those products from an external source. The host has previously been put forward as the source of essential metabolites, but our study suggests that C. parvum may also be able to harness specific metabolic pathways of the microbiota in order to survive and replicate. This finding is important as components of these microbial pathways could be exploited as potential therapeutic targets for the prevention or mitigation of cryptosporidiosis in bovine neonates

    Stock assessment of the Australian east coast sea mullet (Mugil cephalus) fishery 2018

    The sea mullet (Mugil cephalus) is found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. On the east coast of Australia, sea mullet are harvested from a single continous stock which occurs from Baffle Creek in Queensland to Eden in New South Wales. Sea mullet undertake annual migrations along ocean beaches to spawn that make them susceptible to overfishing. This stock assessment covers the Australian east coast and incorporates Queensland and NSW catch data up to 2016. The vast majority of the harvest is taken in the commercial fishery, with the catch in NSW exceeding the Queensland catch (approximately 65% and 35% of the catch respectively). The current assessment combined data in an annual age-structured population model tailored for the biology, management and fishing history of sea mullet and estimates the sea mullet biomass in 2016 is around 50 per cent of unfished exploitable biomass (all sectors and jurisdictions). Biological information for sea mullet has revealed a cyclic pattern of new fish recruitment over years. This has produced a cyclic fluctuation in the exploitable biomass results with a midpoint at around 50% of virgin levels which is trending downward. The final year of the model occurs during a downward phase in a long term cycle of biomass peaks and troughs and fishing could exacerbate this downward biomass trend. The assessment noted that the Bundaberg to Noosa stock range was experiencing below average harvests. Further assessment of the extent of regional decline will increase our understanding of the relationshop between historical levels of fishing and environmental change. The assessment provides estimates of the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and recommends a total allowable catch to rebuild the stock to the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy (SFS) longer term target of 60% unfished biomass (as a proxy for MEY) by 2027

    The 21 cm Signature of Shock Heated and Diffuse Cosmic String Wakes

    The analysis of the 21 cm signature of cosmic string wakes is extended in several ways. First we consider the constraints on GμG\mu from the absorption signal of shock heated wakes laid down much later than matter radiation equality. Secondly we analyze the signal of diffuse wake, that is those wakes in which there is a baryon overdensity but which have not shock heated. Finally we compare the size of these signals compared to the expected thermal noise per pixel which dominates over the background cosmic gas brightness temperature and find that the cosmic string signal will exceed the thermal noise of an individual pixel in the Square Kilometre Array for string tensions Gμ>2.5×108G\mu > 2.5 \times 10^{-8}.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Appendix added, version published in JCA

    The views of five participating undergraduate students of the Student Associates Scheme in England

    This paper reports findings from a study which explored undergraduate perceptions of the Student Associates Scheme in England (SAS). The scheme was established by the Training and Development Agency for Schools in an attempt to increase the number of graduates entering the teaching profession, particularly in shortage subjects such as the physical sciences and mathematics. The scheme places undergraduate students on short-term placements in secondary schools throughout England to provide them with experiences that may encourage them to consider teaching as a career option. Findings show that the SAS school placements were a positive experience for the students participating in this study. However, a question emerged as to whether or not the scheme is targeting students who have yet to decide upon teaching as a career or just reinforcing the existing aspirations of students who have already decided to teach. As the scheme is attempting to increase the number of teachers entering the profession this question has important implications for this study and further work which will focus on undergraduates who think that their career ambitions would not be fulfilled by teaching

    Background and objectives Exposure to particulate matter (PM),2.5 mm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) has been linked to detrimental health effects. This study aimed to describe the relationship between long-term PM2.5 exposure and kidney disease, including eGFR, level of albuminuria, and incident CKD. Design, setting, participants, & measurements The study included 10,997 participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort who were followed from 1996–1998 through 2016. Monthly mean PM2.5 concentrations (mg/m3 ) were estimated at geocoded participant addresses using geographic information system–based, spatiotemporal generalized additive mixed models—including geospatial covariates such as land use—and then averaged over the 12-month period preceding participant examination. Covariate-adjusted, cross-sectional associations of PM2.5, baseline eGFR, and urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) were estimated using linear regression. PM2.5 and incident CKD (defined as follow-up eGFR,60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 with $25% eGFR decline relative to baseline, CKD-related hospitalization or death based on International Classification of Diseases 9/10 codes, or development of ESKD) associations were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression. Modeling was stratified by study site, and stratum-specific estimates were combined using random-effects meta-analyses. Results Baseline mean participant age was 63 (66) years and eGFR was 86 (616) ml/min per 1.73 m2. There was no significant PM2.5-eGFR association at baseline. Each 1-mg/m3 higher annual average PM2.5 was associated with higher UACR after adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic status, and clinical covariates (percentage difference, 6.6%; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 2.6% to 10.7%). Each 1-mg/m3 higher annual average PM2.5 was associated with a significantly higher risk of incident CKD (hazard ratio, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.10). Conclusions Exposure to higher annual average PM2.5 concentrations was associated with a higher level of albuminuria and higher risk for incident CKD in a community-based cohort

    This report is the result of a joint study by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and Jarðfeingi (the Faroese Earth and Energy Directorate) on behalf of the Faroe-Shetland Consortium (FSC) and presents a regional analysis of Jurassic stratigraphy of the Faroe-Shetland region and the implications for the evolution of the proto-NE Atlantic margin. This report integrates the main conclusions of the various component studies that comprise the ‘Jurassic Project’. Readers are directed to the individual, detailed reports for further background information, a discussion of methodology and a fuller discussion of the conclusions.     B-->pi and B-->K transitions in standard and quenched chiral perturbation theory

    We study the effects of chiral logs on the heavy-->light pseudoscalar meson transition form factors by using standard and quenched chiral perturbation theory combined with the static heavy quark limit. The resulting expressions are used to indicate the size of uncertainties due to the use of the quenched approximation in the current lattice studies. They may also be used to assess the size of systematic uncertainties induced by missing chiral log terms in extrapolating toward the physical pion mass. We also provide the coefficient multiplying the quenched chiral log, which may be useful if the quenched lattice studies are performed with very light mesons.Comment: 33 pages, 8 PostScript figures, version to appear in PR
