    The Pedagogy of Digital Storytelling in the College Classroom

    In the fall of 2008, Rachel Raimist and Walter Jacobs collaboratively designed and taught the course “Digital Storytelling in and with Communities of Color” to 18 undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines. Candance Doerr-Stevens audited the class as a graduate student. This article examines the media making processes of the students in the course, asking how participants used digital storytelling to engage with themselves and the media through content creation that both mimicked and critiqued current media messages. In particular, students used the medium of digital storytelling to build and revise identities for purposes of rememory, reinvention, and cultural remixing. We provide a detailed online account of the digital stories and composing processes of the students through the same multimedia genre that the students were asked to use, that of digital storytelling

    COMPARISON OF TWO METHODS OF MANUAL DIGITIZATION ON ACCURACY AND TIME OF COMPLETION

    The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy and time efficacy of two methods of manual digitization (frame by frame, FXF and points over frame, POF). Two groups (experienced, N=20 and inexperience, N= 20) digitized markers using the FXF and POF method. The markers were digitized automatically using software HUMAN and the coordinates from the automatic digitizing were the true values and the manually digitized values were the measured values. These coordinates were used to compute an average root mean square (RMS) value for each subject. An ANOVA (Group x Method) was used to analyze the difference between digitizing time and RMS values. The POF method was more accurate than the FXF method in all of the landmarks analyzed. The advantage of the POF method lies in the ability of the subjects to continuously track the same point throughout the trial

    Interactome comparison of human embryonic stem cell lines with the inner cell mass and trophectoderm

    Networks of interacting co-regulated genes distinguish the inner cell mass (ICM) from the differentiated trophectoderm (TE) in the preimplantation blastocyst, in a species specific manner. In mouse the ground state pluripotency of the ICM appears to be maintained in murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from the ICM. This is not the case for human ESCs. In order to gain insight into this phenomenon, we have used quantitative network analysis to identify how similar human (h)ESCs are to the human ICM. Using the hESC lines MAN1, HUES3 and HUES7 we have shown that all have only a limited overlap with ICM specific gene expression, but that this overlap is enriched for network properties that correspond to key aspects of function including transcription factor activity and the hierarchy of network modules. These analyses provide an important framework which highlights the developmental origins of hESCs

    Enhancement of the in vivo circulation lifetime of l-α-distearoylphosphatidylcholine liposomes: importance of liposomal aggregation versus complement opsonization

    AbstractIncorporation of N-(ω-carboxy)acylamido-phosphatidylethanolamines (-PEs) into large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) of l-α-distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) was found to dramatically increase the in vivo liposomal circulation lifetime in rats, reaching a maximal effect at 10 mol.% of the total phospholipid. Neither pure DSPC liposomes nor those with the longest circulating derivative, N-glutaryl-dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (-DPPE), were found to significantly bind complement from serum. Therefore, the relatively short circulation time of pure DSPC liposomes did not appear to be related to greater complement opsonization leading to uptake by the reticuloendothelial system. However, N-(ω-carboxy)acylamido-PEs were particularly efficient inhibitors of a limited aggregation detected for pure DSPC liposomes. The aggregation tendency of DSPC liposomes incorporating various structural analogs of N-glutaryl-DPPE correlated inversely with the circulation lifetimes. Therefore, it is concluded that such PE derivatives enhance the circulation time by preventing liposomal aggregation and avoiding a poorly understood mechanism of clearance that is dependent on size but is independent of complement opsonization. At high concentrations of N-glutaryl-DPPE (above 10 mol.%), the liposomes exhibited strong complement opsonization and were cleared from circulation rapidly, as were other highly negatively charged liposomes. These data demonstrate that both the lack of opsonization and the lack of a tendency to aggregate are required for long circulation. Liposomal disaggregation via N-(ω-carboxy)acylamido-PEs yields a new class of large unilamellar DSPC liposomes with circulation lifetimes that are comparable to those of sterically stabilized liposomes

    Why do semi-analytic models predict higher scatter in the stellar mass-halo mass relation than cosmological hydrodynamic simulations?

    Semi-analytic models (SAMs) systematically predict higher stellar-mass scatter at a given halo mass than hydrodynamical simulations and most empirical models. Our goal is to investigate the physical origin of this scatter by exploring modifications to the physics in the SAM Dark Sage. We design two black hole formation models that approximate results from the IllustrisTNG 300-1 hydrodynamical simulation. In the first model, we assign a fixed black hole mass of 106M10^{6}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot} to every halo that reaches 1010.5M10^{10.5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}. In the second model, we disregard any black hole growth as implemented in the standard Dark Sage model. Instead, we force all black hole masses to follow the median black hole mass-halo mass relation in IllustrisTNG 300-1 with a fixed scatter. We find that each model on its own does not significantly reduce the scatter in stellar mass. To do this, we replace the native Dark Sage AGN feedback model with a simple model where we turn off cooling for galaxies with black hole masses above 108M10^{8}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}. With this additional modification, the SMBH seeding and fixed conditional distribution models find a significant reduction in the scatter in stellar mass at halo masses between 101114M10^{11-14}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}. These results suggest that AGN feedback in SAMs acts in a qualitatively different way than feedback implemented in cosmological simulations. Either or both may require substantial modification to match the empirically inferred scatter in the Stellar Mass Halo Mass Relation (SMHMR).Comment: 21 pages, 16 figure

    Teaching for implementation: A framework for building implementation research and practice capacity within the translational science workforce

    Implementation science offers a compelling value proposition to translational science. As such, many translational science stakeholders are seeking to recruit, teach, and train an implementation science workforce. The type of workforce that will make implementation happen consists of both implementation researchers and practitioners, yet little guidance exists on how to train such a workforce. We-members of the Advancing Dissemination and Implementation Sciences in CTSAs Working Group-present the Teaching For Implementation Framework to address this gap. We describe the differences between implementation researchers and practitioners and demonstrate what and how to teach them individually and in co-learning opportunities. We briefly comment on educational infrastructures and resources that will be helpful in furthering this type of approach

    Professional closure by proxy: the impact of changing educational requirements on class mobility for a cohort of Big 8 partners

    Closure events impacting on class mobility may include mechanisms initiated by bodies other than the professional body. The research examines if the introduction of full-time study requirements at universities for aspiring accountants effectively introduced a closure mechanism in the accounting profession. Data was derived from an Oral History study of partners in large firms. The younger partners (born after the Second World War) completed full-time degree study at university, but did not provide evidence of class mobility into the profession. The older cohort, born between 1928 and 1946, completed part-time studies only, few completed a degree, and, in contrast to the younger cohort, shows a perceptible upward movement from lower socio-economic classes into the professional class. This suggests that changing the preferred educational routes for new accountants entering the large chartered accounting (CA) firms compromised the "stepping stone" function of accounting as a portal into the professional class

    Sympathy for the Devil: A Conservation Strategy for Devil and Manta Rays

    Background  International trade for luxury products, medicines, and tonics poses a threat to both terrestrial and marine wildlife. The demand for and consumption of gill plates (known as Peng Yu Sai, “Fish Gill of Mobulid Ray”) from devil and manta rays (subfamily Mobulinae, collectively referred to as mobulids) poses a significant threat to these marine fishes because of their extremely low productivity. The demand for these gill plates has driven an international trade supplied by largely unmonitored and unregulated catches from target and incidental fisheries around the world. Scientific research, conservation campaigns, and legal protections for devil rays have lagged behind those for manta rays despite similar threats across all mobulids. Methods  To investigate the difference in attention given to devil rays and manta rays, we examined trends in the scientific literature and updated species distribution maps for all mobulids. Using available information on target and incidental fisheries, and gathering information on fishing and trade regulations (at international, national, and territorial levels), we examined how threats and protective measures overlap with species distribution. We then used a species conservation planning approach to develop the Global Devil and Manta Ray Conservation Strategy, specifying a vision, goals, objectives, and actions to advance the knowledge and protection of both devil and manta rays. Results and Discussion  Our literature review revealed that there had been nearly 2.5-times more “manta”-titled publications, than “mobula” or “devil ray”-titled publications over the past 4.5 years (January 2012–June 2016). The majority of these recent publications were reports on occurrence of mobulid species. These publications contributed to updated Area of Occupancy and Extent of Occurrence maps which showed expanded distributions for most mobulid species and overlap between the two genera. While several international protections have recently expanded to include all mobulids, there remains a greater number of national, state, and territory-level protections for manta rays compared to devil rays. We hypothesize that there are fewer scientific publications and regulatory protections for devil rays due primarily to perceptions of charisma that favour manta rays. We suggest that the well-established species conservation framework used here offers an objective solution to close this gap. To advance the goals of the conservation strategy we highlight opportunities for parity in protection and suggest solutions to help reduce target and bycatch fisheries

    Antibiotic treatment leads to the elimination of Wolbachia endosymbionts and sterility in the diplodiploid collembolan Folsomia candida

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Wolbachia </it>is an extremely widespread bacterial endosymbiont of arthropods and nematodes that causes a variety of reproductive peculiarities. Parthenogenesis is one such peculiarity but it has been hypothesised that this phenomenon may be functionally restricted to organisms that employ haplodiploid sex determination. Using two antibiotics, tetracycline and rifampicin, we attempted to eliminate <it>Wolbachia </it>from the diplodiploid host <it>Folsomia candida</it>, a species of springtail which is a widely used study organism.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Molecular assays confirmed that elimination of <it>Wolbachia </it>was successfully achieved through continuous exposure of populations (over two generations and several weeks) to rifampicin administered as 2.7% dry weight of their yeast food source. The consequence of this elimination was total sterility of all individuals, despite the continuation of normal egg production.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Microbial endosymbionts play an obligatory role in the reproduction of their diplodiploid host, most likely one in which the parthenogenetic process is facilitated by <it>Wolbachia</it>. A hitherto unknown level of host-parasite interdependence is thus recorded.</p
