    Public domain or private data? Developing an ethical approach to social media research in an inter-disciplinary project.

    This paper discusses the ethical issues faced in undertaking research about the role of learning in the subjective experience of chronic illness, where data were taken from social media. Drawing on psychology and education, this paper discusses the ways in which authors from these disciplines are laying the groundwork for legitimate online research by actively debating the public versus private nature of online spaces. The paper explains how this debate informed the development of an ethical approach to research. Relevant ethical guidelines and previous research are used to support the argument that individuals' informed consent is not necessary in online contexts where data exist within the public domain, and where risk of harm to users is low. This paper provides an insight into one educational researcher's journey through the process of doing ethical social media research, and suggests ways forward for others embarking upon that same journey

    Patients' learning in cyberspace: a thematic analysis of patient-patient discussions in a chronic illness Facebook page.

    Online support groups play an increasingly important role in patients' lived experience of chronic illness. The objective of this study was to explore how learning takes place from patients' interactions in an online chronic illness support group. Qualitative data consisted of 1,478 messages posted to a publicly accessible non-illness specific Facebook support page. Data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Four themes were identified from the analysis. This paper presents two themes, information sharing and dis(trust). Employing Wenger's communities of practice theoretical framework (Wenger, 1998), themes are discussed in terms of learning, participation in practices and identity. Online support groups can be pivotal to learning in illness. Patients' online information sharing provides them with opportunities for informal learning about their condition to take place. These online interactions lead to patients developing trust for one another and distrust for the medical care system

    The ultimate test of self-discipline: lockdown and the NoFap community.

    NoFap is a community of mostly heterosexual men abstaining from what they see as an addictive cycle of pornography, masturbation, and orgasm, induced by the exploitation of innate male urges by the pornography industry. In the general population, increased masturbation and consumption of pornography are associated with psychological factors including low affect, loneliness, and boredom, all of which may be exacerbated by the lockdown/social distancing measures adopted in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The present study explores how the NoFap community has responded to the pandemic through discourse analysis of an online message board. We identify four key themes: i) I let go in lockdown, ii) the opportunity of lockdown, iii) testing the parameters of NoFap, and iv) community cohesion. Each is defined and discussed. Combined they illustrate a digital community struggling to honor its meritocratic masculine ideals in the face of challenging circumstances

    New Binary and Exoplanet Candidates from STEREO Light Curves

    AbstractThe Heliospheric Imagers (HI) onboard the STEREO satellites are observing an abundance of background stars as they follow their respective Sun-centered orbits. These are wide-angled CCD cameras with a 20°×20° field of view, directed ~14° from the solar disk. These imagers monitor 20% of the sky over one year, providing light curves for over 500,000 stars down to 12th magnitude and brighter than 7th. We are currently analysing the photometric data from the HI-1 cameras, obtained since March 2007. Following a standard data reduction of the raw photometric images, the resultant light curves underwent a sequence of detrending procedures to minimize systematics in the data, which can contribute to red noise. A transit search was performed using the BLS algorithm, which is sensitive to the box-like shape associated with planetary transits. The resulting candidates were subjected to a number of false-alarm tests to determine the most promising candidates and these were investigated further, visually and using available catalogue data. Possible new exoplanet and binary candidates will now be submitted for follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations to confirm their nature.</jats:p

    Social and environmental determinants of physical activity and dietary choices in adolescents with intellectual disabilities

    PURPOSE: The prevalence of obesity is higher in those with intellectual disabilities than the general population. The aim of the study was to understand the determinants of physical activity and dietary patterns in this population during their final year of school. METHODS: Participants were recruited from four additional support needs (ASN) schools in the Greater Glasgow and South Lanarkshire area of Scotland. Qualitative data were generated from 10 interviews with adolescents with mild-moderate intellectual disabilities. A phenomenological approach was utilised to explore their perceptions of factors influencing their lifestyle behaviours. Transcripts were analysed for recurrent themes relating to PA and diet using a deductive thematic analysis, employing Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a theoretical framework. Themes were identified based on the explicit meanings of the data, until the point of saturation. RESULTS: Three major themes, each with two respective sub-themes, were identified as influencing participants’ engagement with PA and dietary choices. These were: 1) situatedness (sub themes: school culture and family/home culture); 2) motivation (sub themes: self-efficacy and social connectedness); and 3) wider environmental influences (sub themes: weather and availability and price). Overall, the school and home environments were found to have the strongest influence on participants’ lifestyle behaviours, but in very distinct and often conflicting ways. School structure, high self-efficacy, and social connectedness facilitate increased physical activity and healthier diet in adolescents with intellectual disabilities, whereas home life, low self-efficacy and a lack of social connectedness can serve as a barrier to PA and a healthy diet. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents’ environment and social interactions play a pivotal role in influencing physical activity and dietary patterns. These findings suggest that influences on the young people in this population’s PA and dietary patterns are multifaceted and complex in nature

    A realist synthesis of educational interventions to improve nutrition care competencies and delivery by doctors and other healthcare professionals

    Objective: To determine what, how, for whom, why, and in what circumstances educational interventions improve the delivery of nutrition care by doctors and other healthcare professionals work. Design: Realist synthesis following a published protocol and reported following Realist and Meta-narrative Evidence Synthesis: Evolving Standards (RAMESES) guidelines. A multidisciplinary team searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC, EMBASE, PsyINFO, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Science Direct for published and unpublished (grey) literature. The team identified studies with varied designs; appraised their ability to answer the review question; identified relationships between contexts, mechanisms and outcomes (CMOs); and entered them into a spreadsheet configured for the purpose. The final synthesis identified commonalities across CMO configurations. Results: Over half of the 46 studies from which we extracted data originated from the USA. Interventions that improved the delivery of nutrition care improved skills and attitudes rather than just knowledge; provided opportunities for superiors to model nutrition care; removed barriers to nutrition care in health systems; provided participants with local, practically relevant tools and messages; and incorporated non-traditional, innovative teaching strategies. Operating in contexts where student and qualified healthcare professionals provided nutrition care in developed and developing countries, these interventions yielded health outcomes by triggering a range of mechanisms, which included feeling competent, feeling confident and comfortable, having greater self-efficacy, being less inhibited by barriers in healthcare systems and feeling that nutrition care was accepted and recognised. Conclusions: These findings show how important it is to move education for nutrition care beyond the simple acquisition of knowledge. They show how educational interventions embedded within systems of healthcare can improve patients’ health by helping health students and professionals to appreciate the importance of delivering nutrition care and feel competent to deliver it

    Sunlight and red to far-red ratio impact germination of tropical montane cloud forest species

    Context: Australia’s tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) exhibit exceptional species richness and endemism. Determinants of regeneration via seed of these species are next to unknown, limiting our ability to quantify and project their vulnerability to climate change. The ratio of red to far-red light (R:FR) has been shown to influence seed germination of many tropical species.Aims: We investigated germination of six previously unstudied TMCF species in relation to the presence or absence of light (light/dark) and light quality (R:FR). We hypothesised that increased R:FR would lead to increased germination and that small-seeded species would be more likely to have a light requirement and be less sensitive to R:FR compared to larger-seeded species.Methods: Sunlight and polyester filters were used to create a gradient of R:FR ranging from 0.1 to 1.14. Seeds were also sown in constant darkness.Key results: Across species we saw varying germination responses. Three of the four smallest-seeded species exhibited an absolute light requirement for germination and did not discriminate between different R:FR. Germination of the small-seeded TMCF endemic Dracophyllum increased exponentially with increasing R:FR. Germination of the largest-seeded species was inhibited by both low and high R:FR, and germination was higher in constant darkness than diurnal light/dark. All six species were able to germinate at remarkably low R:FR values.Conclusions: Light affects seed germination of Australia’s TMCF plant species in a variety of ways.Implications: The findings of this study provide insights into plant recruitment in situ, and the acclimation potential of these species under reduced R:FR predicted for the future

    Semantic Web Applications and Tools for Life Sciences, 2008 – Introduction

    BACKGROUND: Semantically-enriched browsing has enhanced the browsing experience by providing contextualized dynamically generated Web content, and quicker access to searched-for information. However, adoption of Semantic Web technologies is limited and user perception from the non-IT domain sceptical. Furthermore, little attention has been given to evaluating semantic browsers with real users to demonstrate the enhancements and obtain valuable feedback. The Sealife project investigates semantic browsing and its application to the life science domain. Sealife's main objective is to develop the notion of context-based information integration by extending three existing Semantic Web browsers (SWBs) to link the existing Web to the eScience infrastructure. METHODS: This paper describes a user-centred evaluation framework that was developed to evaluate the Sealife SWBs that elicited feedback on users' perceptions on ease of use and information findability. Three sources of data: i) web server logs; ii) user questionnaires; and iii) semi-structured interviews were analysed and comparisons made between each browser and a control system. RESULTS: It was found that the evaluation framework used successfully elicited users' perceptions of the three distinct SWBs. The results indicate that the browser with the most mature and polished interface was rated higher for usability, and semantic links were used by the users of all three browsers. CONCLUSION: Confirmation or contradiction of our original hypotheses with relation to SWBs is detailed along with observations of implementation issues
