A Way of Reaching out to the Community for a Swiss Reformed State Church

The Church often neglects reaching out because “mission” for her ended at the time of the apostles and has received a negative connotation. Part One of this doctoral project presents the development in one parish, as well as some of the relevant demographic realities in and around Kirchberg/BE. Cultural changes will be discussed as well, such as the change from farmer community to sleeping community, the development of a shoppingmile, the distance between the people and the Church. Then, the parish of Kirchberg is presented, looking back on thirty years. Numbers show that more and more people are leaving the church; baptisms, confirmations, and the total number of members have been on the decline. Theological reflections in Part Two will review an essay, “Reformation Views of the Church,” by Paul Basden and David S. Dockery; a book, Church in the Power of the Spirit, by Jürgen Moltmann; and a report by the General Synod of the Church of England, Mission-Shaped Church. The state parish system will be discussed and the relation of mission and Church is examined. Mission is shown as flowing from God and therefore essential to the Church. Mission is relational and Jesus’ life proves that reality, as evident in Matthew 16:13-20: in a heathen setting the Church is built. Finally, this section will examine what is indispensible for Jesus and therefore for the Church. In Part Three, an art project and a theme for the year is described. Detailed planning and evaluation is set out to help the whole church and every subgroup in it to reach out into the community. All of this has started on the basis of relationships and friendships that are still growing, which should be the basis for any outreach. They point beyond, to the essence of God’s perfect relationship in the Trinity. Theological Mentor: Kurt Fredrickson, Ph

    Priority Paradoxes in Patent Law

The constitutional provision governing patents gives Congress the power to promote the progress of useful arts by securing for limited Times to... Inventors the exclusive Right to their... Discoveries. \u27Because an exclusive right suggests an exclusive grant, the Patent Office interference proceeding has been created for the purpose of determining administratively the question of priority of rights between two or more parties claiming substantially the same invention. This article attempts to state in terms of an informal axiomatic system the rules of law for determining priority of invention, and then examine that system to explore its possible paradoxes Finally, an amendment is proposed to eliminate a serious paradox in the present statute, which permits the occurrence of a circularity of priorities in which a may be prior to b, b prior to c, and c prior to a

The following report is based on an interdisciplinary research study undertaken to investigate the social, economic, and cultural aspects of reindeer herding in northwestern Alaska. The primary purpose of the research project was to gather data on the past and present reindeer herding practices of the region, but also to seek information on herding and land uses, the future potential of this essentially Native industry, and its impacts on the people and economy of the area.National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, and carried out by staff of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks

An IR-Selected Galaxy Cluster at z=1.27

We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z=1.27. ClG J0848+4453 was found in a near-IR field survey as a high density region of objects with very red J-K colors. Optical spectroscopy of a limited number of 24 < R < 25 objects in the area shows that 6 galaxies within a 90 arcsec (0.49/h Mpc, q_O = 0.1) diameter region lie at z=1.273 +/- 0.002. Most of these 6 member galaxies have broad-band colors consistent with the expected spectral energy distribution of a passively-evolving elliptical galaxy formed at high redshift. An additional 2 galaxies located ~2 arcmin from the cluster center are also at z=1.27. Using all 8 of these spectroscopic members, we estimate the velocity dispersion is 700 +/- 180 km/s, similar to that of Abell R=1 clusters in the present epoch. A deep Rosat PSPC observation detects X-ray emission at the 5 sigma level coincident with the nominal cluster center. Assuming that the X-ray flux is emitted by hot gas trapped in the potential well of a collapsed system (no AGN is known to exist in the area), the resulting X-ray luminosity in the rest frame 0.1-2.4 keV band of L_x = 1.5 x 10^44 ergs/s suggests the presence of a moderately large mass. ClG J0848+4453 is the highest redshift cluster found without targetting a central active galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal; 22 pages, 6 figures; corrected titl

The inhibition of neutrophil antibacterial activity by ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene particles.

Following infection, bacterial killing by polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils) is the main host defense against bacteria. Our hypothesis is that particles of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWP) may impair local neutrophil function and consequently reduce neutrophil bacterial killing. To determine how the in vitro phagocytic-bactericidal activity of neutrophils was affected by exposure to wear particles, tests were run comparing the effects of different particle composition, and different concentrations and sizes of UHMWP particles. There was a significant correlation between the number of particles and the decrease in neutrophil bactericidal activity (p<0.01), and the greatest effect was obtained with a concentration of 10(7) UHMWP/ml. There was a significant decrease in neutrophil bactericidal activity by incubation with particles of 0.1-5 microm (p<0.01), but not with larger size. The results suggest that neutrophil functional defects triggered by the presence of UHMWP particles may potentially contribute to the susceptibility of loose implants to bacterial infections
