Empirical investigation of investment behaviour in Australia's pastoral region
Optimal intertemporal investment behaviour ofAustralian pastoralists is modelled using panel data for the period 1979–1993.Results indicate that quasi-fixity of inputs of labour, capital, sheep numbers and cattle numbers is characteristic of production in the pastoral region. It takes about two years for labour, four years for capital and a little over two years for both sheep numbers and cattle numbers to adjust towards long-run optimal levels. Structural and Functional Dissection of Mif2p, a Conserved DNA-binding Kinetochore Protein
Mif2p is the budding-yeast orthologue of the mammalian centromere-binding protein CENP-C. We have mapped domains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Mif2p and studied the phenotyptic consequences of their deletion. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and electrophoretic mobility shift assays, we have further shown that Mif2p binds in the CDEIII region of the budding-yeast centromere, probably in close spatial association with Ndc10p. Moreover, ChIP experiments show that Mif2p recruits to yeast kinetochores a substantial subset of inner and outer kinetochore proteins, but not the Ndc80 or Spc105 complexes. We have determined the crystal structure of the C-terminal, dimerization domain of Mif2p. It has a "cupin" fold, extremely similar both in polypeptide chain conformation and in dimer geometry to the dimerization domain of a bacterial transcription factor. The Mif2p dimer seems to be part of an enhanceosome-like structure that nucleates kinetochore assembly in budding yeast.Molecular and Cellular Biolog
Greenhouse gas balance over thaw-freeze cycles in discontinuous zone permafrost
Peat in the discontinuous permafrost zone contains a globally significant reservoir of carbon that has undergone multiple permafrost-thaw cycles since the end of the mid-Holocene (~3700 years before present). Periods of thaw increase C decomposition rates which leads to the release of CO2 and CH4 to the atmosphere creating potential climate feedback. To determine the magnitude and direction of such feedback, we measured CO2 and CH4 emissions and modeled C accumulation rates and radiative fluxes from measurements of two radioactive tracers with differing lifetimes to describe the C balance of the peatland over multiple permafrost-thaw cycles since the initiation of permafrost at the site. At thaw features, the balance between increased primary production and higher CH4 emission stimulated by warmer temperatures and wetter conditions favors C sequestration and enhanced peat accumulation. Flux measurements suggest that frozen plateaus may intermittently (order of years to decades) act as CO2 sources depending on temperature and net ecosystem respiration rates, but modeling results suggest that—despite brief periods of net C loss to the atmosphere at the initiation of thaw—integrated over millennia, these sites have acted as net C sinks via peat accumulation. In greenhouse gas terms, the transition from frozen permafrost to thawed wetland is accompanied by increasing CO2 uptake that is partially offset by increasing CH4 emissions. In the short-term (decadal time scale) the net effect of this transition is likely enhanced warming via increased radiative C emissions, while in the long-term (centuries) net C deposition provides a negative feedback to climate warming
Primary accumulation in the Soviet transition
The Soviet background to the idea of primary socialist accumulation is presented. The mobilisation of labour power and of products into public sector investment from outside are shown to have been the two original forms of the concept. In Soviet primary accumulation the mobilisation of labour power was apparently more decisive than the mobilisation of products. The primary accumulation process had both intended and unintended results. Intended results included bringing most of the economy into the public sector, and industrialisation of the economy as a whole. Unintended results included substantial economic losses, and the proliferation of coercive institutions damaging to attainment of the ultimate goal - the building of a communist society
NuSTAR study of Hard X-Ray Morphology and Spectroscopy of PWN G21.5-0.9
We present NuSTAR high energy X-ray observations of the pulsar wind nebula
(PWN)/supernova remnant G21.5-0.9. We detect integrated emission from the
nebula up to ~40 keV, and resolve individual spatial features over a broad
X-ray band for the first time. The morphology seen by NuSTAR agrees well with
that seen by XMM-Newton and Chandra below 10 keV. At high energies NuSTAR
clearly detects non-thermal emission up to ~20 keV that extends along the
eastern and northern rim of the supernova shell. The broadband images clearly
demonstrate that X-ray emission from the North Spur and Eastern Limb results
predominantly from non-thermal processes. We detect a break in the spatially
integrated X-ray spectrum at ~9 keV that cannot be reproduced by current SED
models, implying either a more complex electron injection spectrum or an
additional process such as diffusion compared to what has been considered in
previous work. We use spatially resolved maps to derive an energy-dependent
cooling length scale, with . We find
this to be inconsistent with the model for the morphological evolution with
energy described by Kennel & Coroniti (1984). This value, along with the
observed steepening in power-law index between radio and X-ray, can be
quantitatively explained as an energy-loss spectral break in the simple scaling
model of Reynolds (2009), assuming particle advection dominates over diffusion.
This interpretation requires a substantial departure from spherical
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), magnetic-flux-conserving outflow, most plausibly in

We survey recent research on the Soviet economy in the state, party, and military
archives of the Stalin era. The archives have provided rich new evidence on the economic
arrangements of a command system under a powerful dictator including
Stalin’s role in the making of the economic system and economic policy, Stalin’s accumulation
objectives and the constraints that limited his power to achieve them, the
limits to administrative allocation, the information flows and incentives that governed
the behavior of economic managers, the scope and significance of corruption and
market-oriented behavior, and the prospects for economic reform
Locating the most energetic electrons in Cassiopeia A
We present deep (2.4 Ms) observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova
remnant with {\it NuSTAR}, which operates in the 3--79 keV bandpass and is the
first instrument capable of spatially resolving the remnant above 15 keV. We
find that the emission is not entirely dominated by the forward shock nor by a
smooth "bright ring" at the reverse shock. Instead we find that the 15 keV
emission is dominated by knots near the center of the remnant and dimmer
filaments near the remnant's outer rim. These regions are fit with unbroken
power-laws in the 15--50 keV bandpass, though the central knots have a steeper
() spectrum than the outer filaments ().
We argue this difference implies that the central knots are located in the 3-D
interior of the remnant rather than at the outer rim of the remnant and seen in
the center due to projection effects. The morphology of 15 keV emission does
not follow that of the radio emission nor that of the low energy (12 keV)
X-rays, leaving the origin of the 15 keV emission as an open mystery. Even
at the forward shock front we find less steepening of the spectrum than
expected from an exponentially cut off electron distribution with a single
cutoff energy. Finally, we find that the GeV emission is not associated with
the bright features in the {\it NuSTAR} band while the TeV emission may be,
suggesting that both hadronic and leptonic emission mechanisms may be at work.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Antagonism of STAT3 signalling by Ebola virus
Many viruses target signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) 1 and 2 to antagonise antiviral interferon signalling, but targeting of signalling by other STATs/cytokines, including STAT3/interleukin 6 that regulate processes important to Ebola virus (EBOV) haemorrhagic fever, is poorly defined. We report that EBOV potently inhibits STAT3 responses to interleukin-6 family cytokines, and that this is mediated by the interferon-antagonist VP24. Mechanistic analysis indicates that VP24 effects a unique strategy combining distinct karyopherin-dependent and karyopherin-independent mechanisms to antagonise STAT3-STAT1 heterodimers and STAT3 homodimers, respectively. This appears to reflect distinct mechanisms of nuclear trafficking of the STAT3 complexes, revealed for the first time by our analysis of VP24 function. These findings are consistent with major roles for global inhibition of STAT3 signalling in EBOV infection, and provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of STAT3 nuclear trafficking, significant to pathogen-host interactions, cell physiology and pathologies such as cancer
Ginzburg-Landau-Gor'kov Theory of Magnetic oscillations in a type-II 2-dimensional Superconductor
We investigate de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the mixed state of a
type-II two-dimensional superconductor within a self-consistent Gor'kov
perturbation scheme. Assuming that the order parameter forms a vortex lattice
we can calculate the expansion coefficients exactly to any order. We have
tested the results of the perturbation theory to fourth and eight order against
an exact numerical solution of the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes
equations. The perturbation theory is found to describe the onset of
superconductivity well close to the transition point . Contrary to
earlier calculations by other authors we do not find that the perturbative
scheme predicts any maximum of the dHvA-oscillations below . Instead we
obtain a substantial damping of the magnetic oscillations in the mixed state as
compared to the normal state. We have examined the effect of an oscillatory
chemical potential due to particle conservation and the effect of a finite
Zeeman splitting. Furthermore we have investigated the recently debated issue
of a possibility of a sign change of the fundamental harmonic of the magnetic
oscillations. Our theory is compared with experiment and we have found good
