New York City's success at driving crime down to unprecedented lows has ushered in a new era of policing: one in which more time is spent preventing crimes than reacting to them. In this report, the Crime Commission recommends that to sustain these crime reductions, the police and the growing body of responsible stakeholders should prioritize efforts that address youth victimization and exposure to violence; develop the youth workforce; enhance legitimacy; break down silos to improve coordination; and address the negative impacts that state and local policies have on youth

Exploring Facebook as an online support group for smoking cessation

2012 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.This paper employed a quantitative content analysis of the messages posted to a public Facebook page about smoking cessation. The study's population consisted of posts from October and November of 2010, from which a two-week constructed sample was drawn. The sample yielded 118 threads made up of 344 individual posts for analysis. Within the sample, 98 individuals (35 men, 54 women, 9 unidentifiable) served as the unit of analysis. This research explored the types of messages posted on Facebook to see if participants acted in line with gender norms for communicating online and about health. The types of support explored through the posts were informational, esteem and emotional. Results showed that men and women acted differently on the page than traditional gender norms would predict. Specifically, men and women posted to the page at similar rates and both groups used informational support more often than esteem support or emotional support. Smoking status was related to page use; the most active individuals posting to the page were recent quitters and they had a tendency to use informational and esteem support more often than emotional support. Participants also used Facebook's "like" function more often than posting messages containing overt support

Happy Hearts: A Caregiver\u27s Guide to Assisting Patients with Heart Failure

The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a holistic guide that could be provided by occupational therapists (OTs) to caregivers of individuals with heart failure (HF). A thorough literature review was completed on the impact that caregiving for individuals with HF has on mental, physical and environmental aspects of the caregiver and their role as a caregiver. The literature revealed that there is a significant number of individuals with HF and the role of caregiving is on the rise. As the need for caregivers’ increases, the demands associated with caregiving responsibilities increases accordingly. Activities that caregivers assist HF patients with are: bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, medical health, home care, financial assistance, and medication assistance. The current literature lacks information pertaining ways caregivers received and utilized resources to improve quality of life while caring for an individual with HF. Based on the unmet needs of caregivers of individuals with HF, Happy Hearts: A Caregiver Guide to Assisting Patients with Heart Failure was created. Guided by the Person-Environment-Occupation Model, this guide addresses the transactive interaction between the person, environment and occupation and strives to achieve the best fit between those components. The Adult Learning Theory was also considered in the creation of this guide as it presents concepts that assist with the most effective methods of learning for adults. By using this model, it provided a way for the information to be followed and easily understood by caregivers of various educational levels. Within this caregiver guide, the following areas are addressed: the definition and stages of HF, the role of the caregiver, the role of healthcare professionals, the physical and mental factors that influence caregiving, optimizing the caregiver’s environment, and maximizing efficiency in the caregiver role. A supplemental guide was created to demonstrate how OTs can educate and assist caregivers of HF in their everyday lives. Overall, this guide was created to find the best fit between the caregiver’s health and caring for the individual with HF

The Influence of Faith on Women in Leadership Positions

Women are still underrepresented in leadership roles and still suffer from gender stereotypes and injustice. Women of faith are frequently stigmatized by both their faith and place of employment. This study is about women of faith who held leadership roles in rural communities. The objective of this study is to examine the experiences of women of faith in leadership, their qualities, and knowledge as effective leaders. The data used in this study is secondary and it was obtained from a parent study entitled, “Women Ascending to Leadership Positions in Rural Nonprofit Organizations.” This parent study used a snowball approach to interview 32 women who were serving in leadership roles in rural nonprofit organizations. The current study used a phenomenological qualitative approach to determine how their faith influenced their leadership ascension. It is necessary to investigate the journey of women’s leadership development to identify how to best develop future female leaders in nonprofit organizations in rural communities. There is limited research regarding women’s leadership experiences in rural organizations and faith
