Youth In(VOL)ved is an 8 week youth volunteer program directed by the Grant Wood Area American Red Cross, which is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The purpose of the program is to contribute to the American Red Cross’ goal of motivating and recruiting a new generation of volunteers, which supports the organization’s mission of alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies. This paper examines the impact of Youth In(VOL)ved on participants’ attitudes toward volunteerism, which is information that can be used by the American Red Cross to apply for grant funding and to improve the program in future years. The program met once a week and consisted of a half hour lesson on character and leadership development, followed by a volunteer project that was conducted at a local not-for-profit organization. Volunteer projects were held at a new organization each week. Participants came from a class of students participating in the Jane Boyd Community Center summer day camp and ranged from age 11 to 15. The Social and Personal Responsibility Scale was adapted for relevance to the participants and was administered at the beginning and end of the program. The survey scores were analyzed using an independent samples t-test (as attendance at Jane Boyd changed from week to week) and a series of 2 × 2 ANOVAs to evaluate results along demographic characteristics. Results show that post-test scores did not differ significantly from the initial assessment. This could be due, in part, to low attendance on the day the post-survey was administered

EPA/ECLSS consumables analyses for the Spacelab 1 flight

    Get PDF
The results of electrical power system (EPS) and environmental control/life support system (ECLSS) consumables analyses of the Spacelab 1 mission are presented. The analyses were performed to assess the capability of the orbiter systems to support the proposed mission and to establish the various non propulsive consumables requirements. The EPS analysis was performed using the shuttle electrical power system (SEPS) analysis computer program. The ECLSS analysis was performed using the shuttle environmental consumables requirements evaluation tool (SECRET) program

Environmental control and life support system: Analysis of STS-1

The capability of the orbiter environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) to support vehicle cooling requirements in the event of cabin pressure reduction to 9 psia was evaluated, using the Orbiter versions of the shuttle environmental consumbles usage requirement evaluation (SECURE) program, and using heat load input data developed by the spacecraft electrical power simulator (SEPS) program. The SECURE model used in the analysis, the timeline and ECLSS configuration used in formulating the analysis, and the results of the analysis are presented. The conclusion which may be drawn drom these results. is summarized. There are no significant thermal problems with the proposed mission. There are, however, several procedures which could be optimized for better performance: setting the cabin HX air bypass and the interchanger water bypass to the zero flow position is of questionable efficacy; the cabin air pressure monitoring procedure should be re-evaluated; and the degree of equipment power down specified for this analysis and no problems were noted

Healthy moms. Healthy babies. That\u27s my goal as a board certified OB/GYN. The University of Iowa, most specifically the Women\u27s Health Department, will always remain a special place to me. I will forever be grateful for the knowledge I learned, the support I continue to receive, and for the camaraderie that we have in support of Women\u27s health for all of Iowa

A Reappraisal of the Taxation of Wealth Transfers Incident to Divorce

The intent of this article is to inspire a review of the entire area of wealth transfers incident to divorce; to take the scope of review beyond fixation on Davis, with the view of integrating the present regimes in a scheme that is less dependent on the subtle and often invisible distinction between support and property rights. The article discusses first, the purpose of the rules governing periodic cash payments; second, the evolution of the rule on transfers of appreciated property; third, an assessment of the need for reform; and fourth, a proposal for unified treatment of all marital wealth transfers, influenced primarily by the objective of allocating income and the attendant tax liability simply and equitably between husband and wife

Analysis of ECLSS performance during reentry after loss of one ammonia tank

    Get PDF
An analysis was performed to determine whether, in case of a loss of one of the ammonia tanks, the Ammonia Boiler System can provide adequate heat rejection for the orbiter ECLSS during reentry. Results indicate that temperatures can be maintained as long as NH3 is available, but that one tank does not contain sufficient NH3 to complete all missions. A recommendation is made to investigate incorporation of onboard NH3 quantity calculations, and/or addition of a third NH3 tank

    ECLSS consumables analysis: ALT captive/active 1 and captive/active 3

    Get PDF
A consumables analysis of the environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) was performed for approach and landing test (ALT) captive/active missions 1 through 3 and is also applicable to missions 4 and 5. The ECLSS configuration analyzed and the guidelines and assumptions used in performing the analysis are presented. A projection of ammonia temperatures and pressures during the captive/active 1 mission is also included. The resulting consumables, budgets are presented in tabular and graphic form. Adequate margins were obtained for all systems
