    Charge Fluctuations on Membrane Surfaces in Water

    We generalize the predictions for attractions between over-all neutral surfaces induced by charge fluctuations/correlations to non-uniform systems that include dielectric discontinuities, as is the case for mixed charged lipid membranes in an aqueous solution. We show that the induced interactions depend in a non-trivial way on the dielectric constants of membrane and water and show different scaling with distance depending on these properties. The generality of the calculations also allows us to predict under which dielectric conditions the interaction will change sign and become repulsive

    Propagator of a Charged Particle with a Spin in Uniform Magnetic and Perpendicular Electric Fields

    We construct an explicit solution of the Cauchy initial value problem for the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for a charged particle with a spin moving in a uniform magnetic field and a perpendicular electric field varying with time. The corresponding Green function (propagator) is given in terms of elementary functions and certain integrals of the fields with a characteristic function, which should be found as an analytic or numerical solution of the equation of motion for the classical oscillator with a time-dependent frequency. We discuss a particular solution of a related nonlinear Schroedinger equation and some special and limiting cases are outlined.Comment: 17 pages, no figure

    Protein sequence and structure: Is one more fundamental than the other?

    We argue that protein native state structures reside in a novel "phase" of matter which confers on proteins their many amazing characteristics. This phase arises from the common features of all globular proteins and is characterized by a sequence-independent free energy landscape with relatively few low energy minima with funnel-like character. The choice of a sequence that fits well into one of these predetermined structures facilitates rapid and cooperative folding. Our model calculations show that this novel phase facilitates the formation of an efficient route for sequence design starting from random peptides.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to appear in J. Stat.     Solar Intranetwork Magnetic Elements: bipolar flux appearance

    The current study aims to quantify characteristic features of bipolar flux appearance of solar intranetwork (IN) magnetic elements. To attack such a problem, we use the Narrow-band Filter Imager (NFI) magnetograms from the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board \emph{Hinode}; these data are from quiet and an enhanced network areas. Cluster emergence of mixed polarities and IN ephemeral regions (ERs) are the most conspicuous forms of bipolar flux appearance within the network. Each of the clusters is characterized by a few well-developed ERs that are partially or fully co-aligned in magnetic axis orientation. On average, the sampled IN ERs have total maximum unsigned flux of several 10^{17} Mx, separation of 3-4 arcsec, and a lifetime of 10-15 minutes. The smallest IN ERs have a maximum unsigned flux of several 10^{16} Mx, separations less than 1 arcsec, and lifetimes as short as 5 minutes. Most IN ERs exhibit a rotation of their magnetic axis of more than 10 degrees during flux emergence. Peculiar flux appearance, e.g., bipole shrinkage followed by growth or the reverse, is not unusual. A few examples show repeated shrinkage-growth or growth-shrinkage, like magnetic floats in the dynamic photosphere. The observed bipolar behavior seems to carry rich information on magneto-convection in the sub-photospheric layer.Comment: 26 pages, 14 figure

    A model for the Q2Q^2 dependence of polarized structure functions

    We present an update of a phenomenological model for the spin dependent structure functions g1(x,Q2)g_1(x,Q^2) of the proton and neutron. This model is based on a broken SU(6) wavefunction parametrized by the unpolarized structure functions. The two free parameters of the model are choosen to fulfill the Bjorken and Ellis--Jaffe sum rules. The model respects isospin symmetry and has zero strange sea polarization. Using new values for F/DF/D from hyperon beta decay the resulting Q2Q^2 dependent asymmetries A1A_1 are in perfect agreement with the existing data. Therefore we do not see any evidence for a ``spin crisis''. With two choices for g2g_2 the Q2Q^2 dependence of A1(x,Q2)A_1(x,Q^2) and A2(x,Q2)Q2/MA_2(x,Q^2)\sqrt{Q^2}/M is predicted and shown to be small for both cases.Comment: 18 pages and 11 figures as uudecoded ps file

    Electrically tunable solid-state silicon nanopore ion filter

    We show that a nanopore in a silicon membrane connected to a voltage source can be used as an electrically tunable ion filter. By applying a voltage between the heavily doped semiconductor and the electrolyte, it is possible to invert the ion population inside the nanopore and vary the conductance for both cations and anions in order to achieve selective conduction of ions even in the presence of significant surface charges in the membrane. Our model based on the solution of the Poisson equation and linear transport theory indicates that in narrow nanopores substantial gain can be achieved by controlling electrically the width of the charge double layer

    Breast feeding in Australia: A comparative study of Aboriginal and non Aboriginal women

    The superiority of breast feeding over bottle feeding is universally acknowledged, and its crucial contribution to infant health is accepted by health authorities. Australia in recognition of the importance of breast feeding to infant health, aims to increase the prevalence of breast feeding. Breast feeding provides benefits for all children, however the health advantage that is gained by breast feeding in comparison to artificial feeding is more apparent among disadvantaged groups. Aboriginal Australians are identified as one such disadvantaged group. This study compares the available literature regarding the prevalence of breast feeding in Aboriginal and non Aboriginal women. It is apparent that breast feeding prevalence differs, between population groups within Australia. Aboriginal children are less likely to have been breast fed than non Aboriginal children. The comparison, indicates that there are deficiencies in the research regarding breast feeding prevalence in both population groups. Many factors affect a woman's decision to breast feed, and the duration of her breast feeding. These factors include, socioeconomic status, age, marital status, educational attainment, occupation and smoking status. These factors are clearly associated with breast feeding in non Aboriginal women. For Aboriginal women, the factors influencing breast feeding are more complex. It is recommended therefore, that it is essential for future research to examine the attitudinal and socialdeterminants of infant feeding practices in Aboriginal women. This is necessary, if educational or interventional strategies are to be effective for this population

    Significant suppression of weak ferromagnetism in (La1.8{}_{1.8}Eu0.2{}_{0.2})CuO4{}_4

    The magnetic structure of (La1.8{}_{1.8}Eu0.2{}_{0.2})CuO4{}_4 has been studied by magnetization measurements of single crystals, which show antiferromagnetic long-range order below TNT_N = 265 K and a structural phase transition at TsT_s = 130 K. At Ts<T<TNT_s < T < T_N, the Cu spin susceptibility exhibits almost the same behavior as that of La2{}_2CuO4{}_4 in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, which indicates the existence of finite spin canting out of the CuO2{}_2 plane. At T<TsT < T_s, the magnitude of the weak-ferromagnetic moment induced by the spin canting is suppressed approximately by 70{%}. This significant suppression of the weak-ferromagnetic moment is carefully compared with the theoretical analysis of weak ferromagnetism by Stein {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 53}, 775 (1996)), in which the magnitude of weak-ferromagnetic moments strongly depend on the crystallographic symmetry. Based on such comparison, below TsT_s (La1.8{}_{1.8}Eu0.2{}_{0.2})CuO4{}_4 is in the low-temperature less-orthorhombic phase with a space group of PccnPccn. We also discuss the possible magnetic structure of the pure low-temperature tetragonal phase with space group P42/ncmP4_2/{ncm}, which is relevant for rare-earth and alkaline-earth ions co-doped La2{}_2CuO4{}_4.Comment: 16 pages including 5 figures, submitted to Phys.
