    The Pest Status of Yellowjackets in Ohio (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

    Since 1975 in Ohio, there has been an escalation in the number of complaints and inquiries regarding yellowjackets (Vespula and Dolichovespula spp.) to the Ohio pest control operators, the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service (OCES) County Agents and the OCES Entomologists at the Ohio State University. A survey was distributed in May 1985 to both groups in order to determine the pest status of yellowjackets in Ohio. The results of this survey strongly suggest that yelIowjackets in Ohio are largely an economic pest , with most economic disturbances associated with homeowners, outdoor businesses, and outdoor recreational facilities

    We develop a framework for analyzing the capital allocation and capital structure decisions facing financial institutions such as banks. Our model incorporates two key features: I) value-maximizing banks have a well-founded concern with risk management; and ii) not all the risks they face can be frictionlessly hedged in the capital market. This approach allows us to show how bank-level risk management considerations should factor into the pricing of those risks that cannot be easily hedged. We examine several applications, including: the evaluation of proprietary trading operations; and the pricing of unhedgeable derivatives portfolios.     Herd on the Street: Informational Inefficiencies in a Market with Short-Term Speculation

    Standard models of informed speculation suggest that traders try to learn information that others do not have. This result implicitly relies on the assumption that speculators have long horizons, i.e, can hold the asset forever. By contrast, we show that if speculators have short horizons, they may herd on the same information, trying to learn what other informed traders also know. There can be multiple herding equilibria, and herding speculators may even choose to study information that is completely unrelated to fundamentals. These equilibria are informationally inefficient.

    AbstractStudy designCase report.Background and importanceTranscatheter arterial embolization is an interventional radiological procedure that is increasingly used to stop bleeding particularly in trauma. As previous reports allude to paraplegia complicating this procedure in blunt trauma, we describe a complication of this procedure following penetrating trauma to the posterior trunk.Clinical presentationA 21 year old male sustained a stab wound to the back with profuse bleeding. CT angiography showed a bleeding paraspinal branch of the 10th intercostal artery, for which he had intercostal embolization using Embozene® 500μm. Although hemostasis was achieved immediately, the patient developed weakness in both lower limbs shortly after the procedure and rapidly progressed to complete cord injury with sensory level at T10.ConclusionTranscatheter embolization of the intercostal artery, though safe and effective, may be accompanied by a complete and permanent spinal cord injury. It is probably best avoided where it would involve embolizing vessels close to the origin of the artery of Adamkiewicz (T8–T11) and situations where it will involve embolizing the vessel in proximity to its origin in the midline. In the haemodynamically stable patient with penetrating injury, other options including wound exploration should be considered

    LDC Debt: Forgiveness, Indexation, and Investment Incentives

    We compare different indexation schemes in terms of their ability to facilitate forgiveness and reduce the investment disincentives associated with the large LDC debt overhang. Indexing to an endogenous variable (e.g., a country's output) has a negative moral hazard effect on investment, This problem does not arise when payments are linked to an exogenous variable such as commodity prices. Nonetheless, indexing payments to output may be useful when debtors know more about their willingness to invest than lenders. We also reach new conclusions about the desirability of default penalties under asymmetric information.

    Dry-season Water Quality in the San Gabriel River Watershed

    Dry-season flow in the San Gabriel River system is comprised mostly of discharges from water reclamation plants (WRPs), imported water, and storm drains. Although the magnitude of dry-season discharge is generally known, the water quality associated with most of these ‘‘introduced’’ discharges has not been characterized, nor has the associated in-stream response, particularly near storm drain discharges. The goal of this study was to characterize the pattern and magnitude of storm drain and WRP inputs to the San Gabriel River system and the associated in-stream response. To accomplish this, two synoptic dry-weather surveys were conducted, one in 2002 and the other in 2003 during which flow, metals, bacteria, and nutrient concentrations were measured from the WRPs, storm drains, and in-stream locations at a single point in time. For bacteria and most metals, storm drains accounted for the majority of mass emissions to the river. In contrast, WRPs were the primary source for nutrients. In-stream water quality concentrations generally reflected the main sources. For example, in-stream ammonia concentrations were highest downstream of WRP discharges. In-stream bacteria concentrations were consistently high and showed no apparent spatial pattern, suggesting that storm drains or other in-stream sources are present throughout the watershed
