A New Use for the Makerspace

If you want to elicit a groan and an eye roll from almost anyone in the field of education, you need only whisper two words: test prep. Standardized testing is a reality across the country, but even for those who can see its value, the testing is time consuming and can be soul-crushing for teachers and students. At Warrenton Grade School, a Makerspace was established at the end of last year as a way to create opportunities for hands-on learning. It is housed in the art room, and teachers can bring their classes to work on projects. With this space available, we decided to bundle SBAC Test Prep with fun projects that keep the curriculum hands-on and simultaneously help students build background knowledge for performance tasks they will face

Freight Transportation Demands on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers

This paper estimates structural demands for grain transportation on the upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Grain is the predominant commodity transported on these waterways. Analysis indicates Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) to be a superior method for estimating each waterway's structural demand. Results show rates, foreign and domestic demands, floods, season, and river water level influence demands. Further, the analysis suggests that a detailed analysis of river freight demand is a necessary precursor of a defendable study into the economic feasibility of improving transportation infrastructure on the upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers

Treatment of Chloroquine-Resistant \u3ci\u3ePlasmodium vivax\u3c/i\u3e with Chloroquine and Primaquine or Halofantrine

Optimal therapy gor infection by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium vivax has not been established. From 1992 to 1994 during three separate studies, 147 Javanese residents of Irian Jaya infected by P. vivax were treated with either chloroquine (2 5 mg of base/kg during 3 days or 10mg of base/kg in one dose) plus primaquine (1 0 mg/kg during 28 days or 2.5 mg/kg during 3 days)( n = 78), chloroquine plus placebo( n = 50), or halofantrine (24 mg base/kg in 12 h; n = 19). There was no difference in tolerance to or side effects of any of the regimens. Within 14 days of starting therapy, therapeutic failure among these patients was 44% for chloroquine, 5% for chloroquine plus primaquine (P \u3c .001), and 0 for halofantrine (P \u3c .001). After 28 days, therapeutic failure was 78%, 15%, and 6% respectively. Thus, chloroquine plus primaquine in combination and halofantrine alone are effective therapies for chloroquine-resistant P. vivax

A model for quality of life measures in patients with dementia: Lawron's next step

The introduction of drugs that are claimed to improve cognitive function and activities of daily living in patients with Alzheimer's disease raises the question of whether these drugs also influence dementia patients' quality of life (QOL). We describe a hierarchic model of QOL of dementia patients, which can guide the development of measurement instruments. After initially discussing broadly QOL research, we focus on two highly important characteristics of the concept, its broadness and subjectivity, against the background of the relevant literature on QOL in dementia. Dementia-specific dimensions and domains are presented. We identify psychological well-being as the core dimension for QOL of patients with dementia. Copyright © 2004 S. Karger AG, Basel
