X-Ray Diffraction Studies on Alicyclic Saturated Discotic Liquid Crystals
The discotic liquid crystalline phase of a new class of disc-like molecules (hexa-O-alkanoylscyllo- inositoles) is studied by small angle X-ray scattering, DSC and optical observations. Comparison of these three methods allows the determination of the structural arrangement. X-ray film exposures of oriented samples clearly demonstrate the hexagonal columnar ordered type of mesophases. A simple model calculation shows that the alkyl chains of neighbouring columns interpenetrate each other to a small extent
Smectic Phases with Cubic Symmetry: The Splay Analog of the Blue Phase
We report on a construction for smectic blue phases, which have quasi-long
range smectic translational order as well as long range cubic or hexagonal
order. Our proposed structures fill space with a combination of minimal surface
patches and cylindrical tubes. We find that for the right range of material
parameters, the favorable saddle-splay energy of these structures can stabilize
them against uniform layered structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures, RevTe
Circularly-Polarized Light Emission from Semiconductor Planar Chiral Photonic Crystal
We proposed and demonstrated a scheme of surface emitting circularly
polarized light source by introducing strong imbalance between left- and
right-circularly polarized vacuum fields in an on-waveguide chiral grating
structure. We observed circularly polarized spontaneous emission from InAs
quantum dots embedded in the wave guide region of a GaAs-based structure.
Obtained degree of polarization reaches as large as 25% at room temperature.
Numerical calculation visualizes spatial profiles of the modification of vacuum
field modes inside the structure with strong circular anisotropy.Comment: REVTeX4.1, 6pages, 3figure
Induced Anticlinic Ordering and Nanophase Segregation of Bow-Shaped Molecules in a Smectic Solvent
Recent experiments indicate that doping low concentrations of bent-core
molecules into calamitic smectic solvents can induce anticlinic and biaxial
smectic phases. We have carried out Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of mixtures of
rodlike molecules (hard spherocylinders with length/breadth ratio ) and bow- or banana-shaped molecules (hard spherocylinder dimers
with length/breadth ratio or 2.5 and opening angle ) to
probe the molecular-scale organization and phase behavior of rod/banana
mixtures. We find that a low concentration (3%) of dimers
induces anticlinic (SmC) ordering in an untilted smectic (SmA) phase for
. For smaller , half of each bow-shaped
molecule is nanophase segregated between smectic layers, and the smectic layers
are untilted. For , no tilted phases are induced. However,
with decreasing we observe a sharp transition from {\sl intralamellar}
nanophase segregation (bow-shaped molecules segregated within smectic layers)
to {\sl interlamellar} nanophase segregation (bow-shaped molecules concentrated
between smectic layers) near . These results demonstrate that
purely entropic effects can lead to surprisingly complex behavior in rod/banana
mixtures.Comment: 5 pages Revtex, 7 postscript figure
Entropy-induced smectic phases in rod-coil copolymers
We present a self-consistent field theory (SCFT) of semiflexible (wormlike)
diblock copolymers, each consisting of a rigid and a flexible part. The
segments of the polymers are otherwise identical, in particular with regard to
their interactions, which are taken to be of an Onsager excluded-volume type.
The theory is developed in a general three-dimensional form, as well as in a
simpler one-dimensional version. Using the latter, we demonstrate that the
theory predicts the formation of a partial-bilayer smectic-A phase in this
system, as shown by profiles of the local density and orientational
distribution functions. The phase diagram of the system, which includes the
isotropic and nematic phases, is obtained in terms of the mean density and
rigid-rod fraction of each molecule. The nematic-smectic transition is found to
be second order. Since the smectic phase is induced solely by the difference in
the rigidities, the onset of smectic ordering is shown to be an entropic effect
and therefore does not have to rely on additional Flory-Huggins-type repulsive
interactions between unlike chain segments. These findings are compared with
other recent SCFT studies of similar copolymer models and with computer
simulations of several molecular models.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
Tilt order parameters, polarity and inversion phenomena in smectic liquid crystals
The order parameters for the phenomenological description of the smectic-{\it
A} to smectic-{\it C} phase transition are formulated on the basis of molecular
symmetry and structure. It is shown that, unless the long molecular axis is an
axis of two-fold or higher rotational symmetry, the ordering of the molecules
in the smectic-{\it C} phase gives rise to more than one tilt order parameter
and to one or more polar order parameters. The latter describe the indigenous
polarity of the smectic-{\it C} phase, which is not related to molecular
chirality but underlies the appearance of spontaneous polarisation in chiral
smectics. A phenomenological theory of the phase transition is formulated by
means of a Landau expansion in two tilt order parameters (primary and
secondary) and an indigenous polarity order parameter. The coupling among these
order parameters determines the possibility of sign inversions in the
temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarisation and of the helical pitch
observed experimentally for some chiral smectic-{\it } materials. The
molecular interpretation of the inversion phenomena is examined in the light of
the new formulation.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, RevTe
NEXAFS measurements of the molecular ordering in the boundary layers of liquid crystalline free standing films
By near edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy a finite molecular tilt angle in the surface layer of a free standing film in the liquid crystalline smectic A phase of C7 was directly detected. Analysis of the angular dependent intensities of the oxygen K edge NEXAFS spectra leads to an average tilt angle of the molecules in the surface layer of about 34°, which is characteristic for the bulk smectic C* phase of C7
Surface ordering and destruction of the first order phase transition smectic A-smectic C in free standing smectic films
The thermodynamic behaviour of the first order phase transition smectic A-smectic C in free standing films is studied numerically. Profiles of the tilt angle across the film, the free energy and average structural parameters and are calculated. By diminishing the number of smectic layers the phase transition disappears at a critical film thickness , which is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the penetration length of the surface induced order. Computer simulation results describe well recent experimental data
