Hotspots of soil organic carbon storage revealed by laboratory hyperspectral imaging

    Get PDF
Subsoil organic carbon (OC) is generally lower in content and more heterogeneous than topsoil OC, rendering it difficult to detect significant differences in subsoil OC storage. We tested the application of laboratory hyperspectral imaging with a variety of machine learning approaches to predict OC distribution in undisturbed soil cores. Using a bias-corrected random forest we were able to reproduce the OC distribution in the soil cores with very good to excellent model goodness-of-fit, enabling us to map the spatial distribution of OC in the soil cores at very high resolution (~53 × 53 µm). Despite a large increase in variance and reduction in OC content with increasing depth, the high resolution of the images enabled statistically powerful analysis in spatial distribution of OC in the soil cores. In contrast to the relatively homogeneous distribution of OC in the plough horizon, the subsoil was characterized by distinct regions of OC enrichment and depletion, including biopores which contained ~2–10 times higher SOC contents than the soil matrix in close proximity. Laboratory hyperspectral imaging enables powerful, fine-scale investigations of the vertical distribution of soil OC as well as hotspots of OC storage in undisturbed samples, overcoming limitations of traditional soil sampling campaigns

Incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations in single-crystalline LiFeAs studied by inelastic neutron scattering

We present an inelastic neutron scattering study on single-crystalline LiFeAs devoted to the characterization of the incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations at Q=(0.5±δ,0.5∓δ,ql)\mathbf{Q}=(0.5\pm\delta, 0.5\mp\delta, q_l). Time-of-flight measurements show the presence of these magnetic fluctuations up to an energy transfer of 60 meV, while polarized neutrons in combination with longitudinal polarization analysis on a triple-axis spectrometer prove the pure magnetic origin of this signal. The normalization of the magnetic scattering to an absolute scale yields that magnetic fluctuations in LiFeAs are by a factor eight weaker than the resonance signal in nearly optimally Co-doped BaFe2_2As2_2, although a factor two is recovered due to the split peaks owing to the incommensurability. The longitudinal polarization analysis indicates weak spin space anisotropy with slightly stronger out-of-plane component between 6 and 12 meV. Furthermore, our data suggest a fine structure of the magnetic signal most likely arising from superposing nesting vectors.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Rotational levels in quantum dots

Low energy spectra of isotropic quantum dots are calculated in the regime of low electron densities where Coulomb interaction causes strong correlations. The earlier developed pocket state method is generalized to allow for continuous rotations. Detailed predictions are made for dots of shallow confinements and small particle numbers, including the occurance of spin blockades in transport.Comment: RevTeX, 10 pages, 2 figure

    Scheme Independence of g1p(x,Q2)g_1^p (x, Q^2)

We work with two general factorization schemes in order to explore the consequences of imposing scheme independence on g1p(x,Q2)g_1^p (x, Q^2). We see that although the light quark sector is indifferent to the choice of a particular scheme, the extension of the calculations to the heavy quark sector indicates that a scheme like the MSˉ\bar{MS} is preferable.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. Experience affects exercise-induced changes in catecholamines, glucose, and FFA

The interference of the experimental conditions on the exercise-induced alterations in plasma catecholamines, plasma free fatty acids, and glucose and insulin concentrations was investigated in rats. Exercise consisted of strenuous swimming against a countercurrent (0.22 m/s) for 15 min in a pool with water of 33°C. Before, during, and after swimming, blood samples were taken through a permanent heart catheter. The blood component levels in rats that were confronted with exercise for the very first time were compared with the levels in rats that were well accustomed to the exercise conditions. The very first time rats swam caused an enhanced release of epinephrine from the adrenal medulla and a reduced output of norepinephrine from the sympathetic nerve endings. Furthermore, in the first time swim group, blood glucose levels were higher and plasma free fatty acid concentrations were lower compared with the well-accustomed animals. There were no differences in plasma insulin concentrations. It is concluded that the experimental conditions may interfere considerably with the hormonal and metabolic response to exercise. Furthermore the results reinforce the idea that the two parts of the sympathoadrenal system are functionally and metabolically dissociated

High Enthalpy Flow Characterization Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
This research aims at analysing thermo-chemical properties of the hypersonic high-enthalpy flow in the L2K wind tunnel, situated in Köln at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). In the L2K wind tunnel, Martian atmosphere can be created, and the facility can simulate heat load conditions encountered during atmospheric entry of Martian missions. The focus of this project is the analysis of the non-intrusive experimental technique "Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy" (TDLAS), based on line of sight absorption spectroscopy, and applied to hypersonic flow. A simplified Martian atmosphere (97% CO2 and 3% N2) was used. A new interpretation for CO-TDLAS experimental technique applied to hypersonic wind tunnel flow analysis was developed. Numerical simulations with the DLR-TAU non-equilibrium flow solver were used as support of this analysis, and match between simulations and experiments was observed. Flow speed and absorption line’s width were measured, and the knowledge of L2K’s flow structure was extended
