Universality of dispersive spin-resonance mode in superconducting BaFe2As2
Spin fluctuations in superconducting BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (x=0.34, Tc = 29.5 K)
are studied using inelastic neutron scattering. Well-defined commensurate
magnetic signals are observed at ({\pi},0), which is consistent with the
nesting vector of the Fermi surface. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations
in the normal state exhibit a three-dimensional character reminiscent of the
AFM order in nondoped BaFe2As2. A clear spin gap is observed in the
superconducting phase forming a peak whose energy is significantly dispersed
along the c-axis. The bandwidth of dispersion becomes larger with approaching
the AFM ordered phase universally in all superconducting BaFe2As2, indicating
that the dispersive feature is attributed to three-dimensional AFM
correlations. The results suggest a strong relationship between the magnetism

Evidence for charge orbital and spin stripe order in an overdoped manganite
We present diffraction data on a single-layered manganite
La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 with hole doping (x>0.5). Overdoped La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4
exhibits a complex ordering of charges, orbitals and spins. Single crystal
neutron diffraction experiments reveal three incommensurate and one
commensurate order parameters to be tightly coupled. The position and the shape
of the distinct superstructure scattering points to a stripe arrangement in
which ferromagnetic zigzag chains are disrupted by additional Mn4+ stripes
Excess portal venous long-chain fatty acids induce syndrome X via HPA axis and sympathetic activation
We tested the hypothesis that excessive portal venous supply of long-chain fatty acids to the liver contributes to the development of insulin resistance via activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) and sympathetic system. Rats received an intraportal infusion of the long-chain fatty acid oleate (150 nmol/min, 24 h), the medium-chain fatty acid caprylate, or the solvent. Corticosterone (Cort) and norepinephrine (NE) were measured as indexes for HPA axis and sympathetic activity, respectively. Insulin sensitivity was assessed by means of an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT). Oleate infusion induced increases in plasma Cort (Δ = 13.5 ± 3.6 µg/dl; P < 0.05) and NE (Δ = 235 ± 76 ng/l; P < 0.05), whereas caprylate and solvent had no effect. The area under the insulin response curve to the IVGTT was larger in the oleate-treated group than in the caprylate and solvent groups (area = 220 ± 35 vs. 112 ± 13 and 106 ± 8, respectively, P < 0.05). The area under the glucose response curves was comparable [area = 121 ± 13 (oleate) vs. 135 ± 20 (caprylate) and 96 ± 11 (solvent)]. The results are consistent with the concept that increased portal free fatty acid is involved in the induction of visceral obesity-related insulin resistance via activation of the HPA axis and sympathetic system.
Rotational levels in quantum dots
Low energy spectra of isotropic quantum dots are calculated in the regime of
low electron densities where Coulomb interaction causes strong correlations.
The earlier developed pocket state method is generalized to allow for
continuous rotations. Detailed predictions are made for dots of shallow
confinements and small particle numbers, including the occurance of spin
