    Antioxidant Properties of Soybean Oil Supplemented with Ginger and Turmeric Powders

    Soybean oil has been supplemented with 10% (w/w) of ginger and turmeric powders derived from commercial products (GC—commercial ginger and TC—commercial turmeric), freeze-dried rhizomes (freeze-dried ginger (GR) and freeze-dried turmeric rhizome—TR) and peels (freeze-dried ginger peel (GP) and freeze-dried turmeric peel—TP) for developing a functional seasoning with great lipid stability for human consumption. The exhausted ginger and turmeric powders were also recovered and recycled two times to promote a more sustainable process. The antioxidant activity and oxidative stability of oil samples were evaluated respectively by spectrophotometric and Rancimat methods. Folin–Ciocalteu assay and HPLC analysis were also performed to quantify total polyphenols, ginger-derived 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol, and turmeric-derived curcumin. Their antioxidant activity as well as oxidative stability, which non-linearly decreased over cycles because of a strongly reduced phenolic extractability, linearly increased with increasing phenolic yields. Hence, ginger and turmeric can be proposed as healthy spices containing bioactive compounds to control lipid oxidation and improve oil stability. Moreover, the valorization of peels as eco-friendly source of natural antioxidants is a valid strategy for providing added-value to these agro-food wastes

    Effects of a Short Educational Program for the Prevention of Foot Ulcers in High-Risk Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background. Patient education is capable of reducing the risk for diabetic foot ulcers. However, specific education on foot ulcer prevention was either included in broader programs addressing different parts of diabetes care or provided with time- and resource-consuming curricula. The aim of the study is to assess the feasibility and efficacy of a brief educational program for the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers in high-risk patients. Methods. The study was performed on type 2 diabetic patients, randomized in a 1 : 1 ratio either to intervention or to control group. The principal endpoint was the incidence of foot ulcers. The intervention was a two-hour program provided to groups of 5–7 patients, including a 30-minute face-to-face lesson on risk factors for foot ulcers, and a 90-minute interactive session with practical exercises on behaviors for reducing risk. Results. The study was prematurely terminated due to a highly significant difference in outcome between the two treatment groups. The final sample was therefore composed of 121 patients. Six patients, all in the control group, developed ulcers during the 6-month follow-up (10% versus 0%, p=0.012). Conclusions. A brief, 2-hour, focused educational program is effective in preventing diabetic foot ulcers in high-risk patients

    Does laparoscopic management of deep infiltrating endometriosis improve quality of life? A prospective study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) can affect importantly patients' quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the laparoscopic management of DIE on QOL after six months from treatment.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>It is a prospective cohort study. In a tertiary care university hospital, between April 2008 and December 2009, 100 patients underwent laparoscopic management of DIE and completed preoperatively and 6-months postoperatively a QOL questionnaire, the short form 36 (SF-36).</p> <p>Quality of life was measured through the SF-36 scores. Intra-operative details of disease site, number of lesions, type of intervention, period of hospital stay and peri-operative complications were noted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Six months postoperatively all the women had a significant improvement in every scale of the SF-36 (p < 0,0005). Among patients with intestinal DIE, significant differences in postoperative scores of SF-36 were not detected between patients submitted to nodule shaving and segmental resection (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the SF-36 scores at 6 months from surgery between patients who received postoperative medical treatment and patients who did not (p > 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Laparoscopic excision of DIE lesions significantly improves general health and psycho-emotional status at six months from surgery without differences between patients submitted to intestinal segmental resection or intestinal nodule shaving.</p

    Long-Term Outcome After Adoptive Immunotherapy With Natural Killer Cells: Alloreactive NK Cell Dose Still Matters

    Recently, many reports were published supporting the clinical use of adoptivelytransferred natural killer (NK) cells as a therapeutic tool against cancer, including acutemyeloid leukemia (AML). Our group demonstrated promising clinical response usingadoptive immunotherapy with donor-derived alloreactive KIR-ligand-mismatched NK cellsin AML patients. Moreover, the antileukemic effect was correlated with the dose of infusedalloreactive NK cells (“functional NK cell dose”). Herein, we update the results of ourprevious study on a cohort of adult AML patients (median age at enrollment 64) infirstmorphological complete remission (CR), not eligible for allogeneic stem celltransplantation. After an extended median follow-up of 55.5 months, 8/16 evaluablepatients (50%) are still off-therapy and alive disease-free.     The baseline comorbidity burden affects survival in elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia receiving hypomethylating agents: Results from a multicentric clinical study

    Background: In older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the definition of fitness, prognosis, and risk of death represents an open question. Methods: In the present study, we tested the impact on survival of disease- and patient-related parameters in a large cohort of elderly AML patients homogeneously assigned to treatment with hypomethylating agents (HMAs). Results: In 131 patients with a median age of 76 years, we confirmed that early response (&lt;0.001) and biology-based risk classification (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.003) can select patients with better-predicted survival. However, a full disease-oriented model had limitations in stratifying our patients, prompting us to investigate the impact of baseline comorbidities on overall survival basing on a comorbidity score. The albumin level (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.001) and the presence of lung disease (p&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.013) had a single-variable impact on prognosis. The baseline comorbidity burden was a powerful predictor of patients' frailty, correlating with increased incidence of adverse events, especially infections, and predicted overall survival (p &lt; 0.001). Conclusion: The comorbidity burden may contribute to impact prognosis in addition to disease biology. While the therapeutic armamentarium of elderly AML is improving, a comprehensive approach that combines AML biology with tailored interventions to patients' frailty is likely to fully exploit the anti-leukemia potential of novel drugs

    Gamma-Ray Burst observations by the high-energy charged particle detector on board the CSES-01 satellite between 2019 and 2021

    In this paper we report the detection of five strong Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) mounted on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01), operational since 2018 on a Sun-synchronous polar orbit at a ∼\sim 507 km altitude and 97∘^\circ inclination. HEPD-01 was designed to detect high-energy electrons in the energy range 3 - 100 MeV, protons in the range 30 - 300 MeV, and light nuclei in the range 30 - 300 MeV/n. Nonetheless, Monte Carlo simulations have shown HEPD-01 is sensitive to gamma-ray photons in the energy range 300 keV - 50 MeV, even if with a moderate effective area above ∼\sim 5 MeV. A dedicated time correlation analysis between GRBs reported in literature and signals from a set of HEPD-01 trigger configuration masks has confirmed the anticipated detector sensitivity to high-energy photons. A comparison between the simultaneous time profiles of HEPD-01 electron fluxes and photons from GRB190114C, GRB190305A, GRB190928A, GRB200826B and GRB211211A has shown a remarkable similarity, in spite of the different energy ranges. The high-energy response, with peak sensitivity at about 2 MeV, and moderate effective area of the detector in the actual flight configuration explain why these five GRBs, characterised by a fluence above ∼\sim 3 ×\times 10−5^{-5} erg cm−2^{-2} in the energy interval 300 keV - 50 MeV, have been detected.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ

    Achievement of the planetary defense investigations of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission

    NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission was the first to demonstrate asteroid deflection, and the mission's Level 1 requirements guided its planetary defense investigations. Here, we summarize DART's achievement of those requirements. On 2022 September 26, the DART spacecraft impacted Dimorphos, the secondary member of the Didymos near-Earth asteroid binary system, demonstrating an autonomously navigated kinetic impact into an asteroid with limited prior knowledge for planetary defense. Months of subsequent Earth-based observations showed that the binary orbital period was changed by –33.24 minutes, with two independent analysis methods each reporting a 1σ uncertainty of 1.4 s. Dynamical models determined that the momentum enhancement factor, β, resulting from DART's kinetic impact test is between 2.4 and 4.9, depending on the mass of Dimorphos, which remains the largest source of uncertainty. Over five dozen telescopes across the globe and in space, along with the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids, have contributed to DART's investigations. These combined investigations have addressed topics related to the ejecta, dynamics, impact event, and properties of both asteroids in the binary system. A year following DART's successful impact into Dimorphos, the mission has achieved its planetary defense requirements, although work to further understand DART's kinetic impact test and the Didymos system will continue. In particular, ESA's Hera mission is planned to perform extensive measurements in 2027 during its rendezvous with the Didymos–Dimorphos system, building on DART to advance our knowledge and continue the ongoing international collaboration for planetary defense

    Foam Characteristics and Sensory Analysis of Arabica Coffee, Extracted by Espresso Capsule and Moka Methods

    The coffee extraction methods modify the structure of the foam (when it is present) and the sensory profile of the beverage. In this research, three ways of extracting and two varieties of 100% Arabica were compared. Nineteen bars and fifteen bars were applied to the coffee thanks to the use of compatible capsules and machines. The method with the moka was considered, which acts at low pressures and does not allow the formation of foam (crema). In addition, the Brazil and Guatemala Arabica varieties were considered to understand the extent to which Arabica coffee can respond in structural and sensorial terms to the extraction techniques applied. The results show that 19-bar espresso coffees have a very stable crema with very small bubbles, which give a uniform and fine structure to the coffee crema. On the contrary, the pressure at 15 bars generates more unstable foams and bubbles that tend to be disproportionate, with more marked effects in the Brazil variety. The sensory profiles of the coffees respond to the extraction techniques applied. While the coffee extracted with the moka has sensory descriptors with rather low values, those obtained at 19 and 15 bars have much wider profiles. In conclusion, different pressure intensities to the coffee extraction affect the quality of crema and the solubilization of organoleptically active compound

    Valorization of ginger and turmeric peels

    The Zingiberaceae family includes ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) zhizomes which are primarily used in the dried spices or essential oil production and are widely recognized for their health benefits due to their strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. This work is aimed to investigate the antioxidant potential of ginger and turmeric peels which are usually discarded during post-harvest operations.The total phenolic contents and the antioxidant activities of the extracts obtained from the powdered peels of ginger and turmeric rhizomes resulted in statistically relevant differences (P 640.0001) depending on the Zingiberaceae species and extraction method. In details, the ethanol extraction compared with infusion and sonication techniques was more effective in increasing their antioxidant activities based on DPPH (4.16, 2.17, 2.17 mg TE/g, respectively) and FRAP (65.07, 18.81, 15.49 mg TE/g, respectively) assays because of higher yields of phenolic substances (78.73, 36.84, 33.08 mg GAE/g, respectively) such as 6-gingerol (12.78, 0.41, 0.58 mg/g, respectively) and curcumin (48.62, 5.42, 1.38 mg/g, respectively) detected by HPLC analysis in ginger and turmeric extracts, respectively. Moreover the ethanolic extracts of turmeric peels showed the better performances than those of ginger peels with higher amounts of phenolic substances (104.88, 52.57 mg GAE/g, respectively) and consequently greater antioxidant activities based on DPPH (4.45, 3.87 mg TE/g, respectively) and FRAP (72.38, 57.77 mg TE/g, respectively) assays. In conclusions, the discarded peels of ginger and turmeric rhizomes can be recovered as a source of natural antioxidants not only in food additives but also cosmetic and medicinal product

    Characterization of crude esterase activity from two plants used in cheese making: Cynara cardunculus L. and ficus carica L

    For centuries, extracts of Cynara cardunculus and the latex of Ficus carica, have been used in cheesemaking, thanks to their proteases that clot milk casein. Since esterase activity is very important to release odorous compounds in cheese, in this study we characterized the esterase activity of an extract of Cynara cardunculus and the latex of Ficus carica. The results, obtained by titration, spectrophotometric techniques, zymograms and tests on agar plates, show the presence of esterase activity in the samples tested, with affinity towards the esters of short chain fatty acids, such as acetic, propionic and butyric acid. In conclusion, this study provides a background information on esterases of two plants used in cheesemaking and represents a starting point for further investigations of their applications, not only in dairying but also in other industries involved in the processing and transformation of fats
