Evaluating the Labor-Market Effects of Compulsory Military Service
We identify the causal effect of compulsory military service on conscripts’ subsequent labor-market outcomes by exploiting the regression-discontinuity design of the military draft in Germany during the 1950s. Unbiased estimates of the effect of military service on lifetime earnings, wages, and employment are obtained by comparing men born before July 1, 1937 (the "White Cohort") who were exempted from compulsory military service to men who were born on or shortly after this threshold date and hence faced a positive probability of being drafted. Do Guns Displace Books? – The Impact of Compulsory Military Service on Educational Attainment
Compulsory military service typically drafts young men when they are at the height of their learning ability. Thus, it can be expected to depress the demand for higher education since skill atrophy and the delayed entry into the civilian labor market reduce the returns to human-capital investments. Attending university, however, might open the possibility to avoid the draft, leading to an increase in the demand for tertiary education. To estimate the causal eff ect of conscription on the probability to obtain a university degree, we use a regression-discontinuity design that employs special regulations associated with the introduction of conscription in Germany in 1956. On the commutability of homogenization and linearization in finite elasticity
We study non-convex elastic energy functionals associated to (spatially)
periodic, frame indifferent energy densities with a single non-degenerate
energy well at SO(n). Under the assumption that the energy density admits a
quadratic Taylor expansion at identity, we prove that the Gamma-limits
associated to homogenization and linearization commute. Moreover, we show that
the homogenized energy density, which is determined by a multi-cell
homogenization formula, has a quadratic Taylor expansion with a quadratic term
that is given by the homogenization of the quadratic term associated to the
linearization of the initial energy density
The new Felsenkeller 5 MV underground accelerator
The field of nuclear astrophysics is devoted to the study of the creation of
the chemical elements. By nature, it is deeply intertwined with the physics of
the Sun. The nuclear reactions of the proton-proton cycle of hydrogen burning,
including the 3He({\alpha},{\gamma})7Be reaction, provide the necessary nuclear
energy to prevent the gravitational collapse of the Sun and give rise to the by
now well-studied pp, 7Be, and 8B solar neutrinos. The not yet measured flux of
13N, 15O, and 17F neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycle is affected
in rate by the 14N(p,{\gamma})15O reaction and in emission profile by the
12C(p,{\gamma})13N reaction. The nucleosynthetic output of the subsequent phase
in stellar evolution, helium burning, is controlled by the
12C({\alpha},{\gamma})16O reaction.
In order to properly interpret the existing and upcoming solar neutrino data,
precise nuclear physics information is needed. For nuclear reactions between
light, stable nuclei, the best available technique are experiments with small
ion accelerators in underground, low-background settings. The pioneering work
in this regard has been done by the LUNA collaboration at Gran Sasso/Italy,
using a 0.4 MV accelerator.
The present contribution reports on a higher-energy, 5.0 MV, underground
accelerator in the Felsenkeller underground site in Dresden/Germany. Results
from {\gamma}-ray, neutron, and muon background measurements in the
Felsenkeller underground site in Dresden, Germany, show that the background
conditions are satisfactory for nuclear astrophysics purposes. The accelerator
is in the commissioning phase and will provide intense, up to 50{\mu}A, beams
of 1H+, 4He+ , and 12C+ ions, enabling research on astrophysically relevant

A model of semimetallic behavior in strongly correlated electron systems
Metals with values of the resistivity and the Hall coefficient much larger
than typical ones, e.g., of sodium, are called semimetals. We suggest a model
for semimetals which takes into account the strong Coulomb repulsion of the
charge carriers, especially important in transition-metal and rare-earth
compounds. For that purpose we extend the Hubbard model by coupling one
additional orbital per site via hybridization to the Hubbard orbitals. We
calculate the spectral function, resistivity and Hall coefficient of the model
using dynamical mean-field theory. Starting from the Mott-insulating state, we
find a transition to a metal with increasing hybridization strength
(``self-doping''). In the metallic regime near the transition line to the
insulator the model shows semimetallic behavior. We compare the calculated
temperature dependence of the resistivity and the Hall coefficient with the one
found experimentally for . The comparison demonstrates that the
anomalies in the transport properties of possibly can be
assigned to Coulomb interaction effects of the charge carriers not captured by

High-Resolution Spectroscopic Study of Extremely Metal-Poor Star Candidates from the SkyMapper Survey
The SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey is carrying out a search for the most
metal-poor stars in the Galaxy. It identifies candidates by way of its unique
filter set that allows for estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters. The
set includes a narrow filter centered on the Ca II K 3933A line, enabling a
robust estimate of stellar metallicity. Promising candidates are then confirmed
with spectroscopy. We present the analysis of Magellan-MIKE high-resolution
spectroscopy of 122 metal-poor stars found by SkyMapper in the first two years
of commissioning observations. 41 stars have [Fe/H] <= -3.0. Nine have [Fe/H]
<= -3.5, with three at [Fe/H] ~ -4. A 1D LTE abundance analysis of the elements
Li, C, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, Ba and Eu shows
these stars have [X/Fe] ratios typical of other halo stars. One star with low
[X/Fe]
[X/Fe values appears to be "Fe-enhanced," while another star has an extremely
large [Sr/Ba] ratio: >2. Only one other star is known to have a comparable
value. Seven stars are "CEMP-no" stars ([C/Fe] > 0.7, [Ba/Fe] < 0). 21 stars
exhibit mild r-process element enhancements (0.3 <=[Eu/Fe] < 1.0), while four
stars have [Eu/Fe] >= 1.0. These results demonstrate the ability to identify
extremely metal-poor stars from SkyMapper photometry, pointing to increased
sample sizes and a better characterization of the metal-poor tail of the halo

Cytidine-5-diphosphocholine reduces microvascular permeability during experimental endotoxemia
Background: Microvascular permeability and leukocyte adhesion are pivotal mechanisms in sepsis pathophysiology contributing to the development of shock and mortality. No effective pharmacological therapy is currently available to restore microvascular barrier function in sepsis. Cholinergic mediators have been demonstrated to exert anti-inflammatory effects during inflammation. Cytidine-5-diphosphocholine (CDP-choline) is an extensively studied cholinergic drug due to its brain protective characteristics in cerebrovascular diseases. This study evaluated the effect of CDP-choline on microvascular permeability and leukocyte adhesion during endotoxemia. Methods: Macromolecular leakage, leukocyte adhesion, and venular wall shear rate were examined in mesenteric postcapillary venules of rats by using intravital microscopy (IVM). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (4 mg/kg/h) or equivalent volumes of saline were continuously infused following baseline IVM at 0 min. IVM was repeated after 60 and 120 min in endotoxemic and nonendotoxemic animals. CDP-choline (100 mg/kg) was applied as an i.v. bolus. Animals received either saline alone, CDP-choline alone, CDP-choline 10 min before or 30 min after LPS administration, or LPS alone. Due to nonparametric data distribution, Wilcoxon test and Dunn's multiple comparisons test were used for data analysis. Data were considered statistically significant at p < 0.05. Results: Treatment with LPS alone significantly increased microvascular permeability and leukocyte adhesion and decreased venular wall shear rate. CDP-choline significantly reduced microvascular permeability in animals treated with LPS. Leukocyte adhesion and venular wall shear rate were not affected by CDP-choline during endotoxemia. Conclusion: CDP-choline has a protective effect on microvascular barrier function during endotoxemia. Considering the excellent pharmacologic safety profile of CDP-choline, its use could be an approach for the treatment of capillary leakage in sepsis
Muscarinic M1 receptors modulate endotoxemia-induced loss of synaptic plasticity
Septic encephalopathy is associated with rapid deterioration of cortical functions. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) we detected functional abnormalities in the hippocampal formation of patients with septic delirium. Hippocampal dysfunction was further investigated in an animal model for sepsis using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injections to induce endotoxemia in rats, followed by electrophysiological recordings in brain slices. Endotoxemia induced a deficit in long term potentiation which was completely reversed by apamin, a blocker of small conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) channels, and partly restored by treatment with physostigmine (eserine), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, or TBPB, a selective M1 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor agonist. These results suggest a novel role for SK channels in the etiology of endotoxemia and explain why boosting cholinergic function restores deficits in synaptic plasticity. Drugs which enhance cholinergic or M1 activity in the brain may prove beneficial in treatment of septic delirium in the intensive care unit
