Trade Liberalization and Growth: Plant-Level Evidence from Switzerland
This paper estimates the effect of trade liberalization on growth, using plant-level data from Switzerland. We employ a natural experiment framework to quantify the effect of a bundle of treaties liberalizing trade between Switzerland and the EU enacted in June 2002 ("Bilateral Agreements I") on the growth of Swiss plants. Using both a semi-parametric difference-indifferences and a matching approach, we find that the liberalization of trade increased the growth of affected plants by 1-2 percent during the first six years after liberalization. Regulation of neuronal ion channels via P2Y receptors
Within the last 15Â years, at least 8 different G protein-coupled P2Y receptors have been characterized. These mediate slow metabotropic effects of nucleotides in neurons as well as non-neural cells, as opposed to the fast ionotropic effects which are mediated by P2X receptors. One class of effector systems regulated by various G protein-coupled receptors are voltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the modulation of such neuronal ion channels via P2Y receptors. The regulated proteins include voltage-gated Ca2+ and K+ channels, as well as N-methyl-d-aspartate, vanilloid, and P2X receptors, and the regulating entities include most of the known P2Y receptor subtypes. The functional consequences of the modulation of ion channels by nucleotides acting at pre- or postsynaptic P2Y receptors are changes in the strength of synaptic transmission. Accordingly, ATP and related nucleotides may act not only as fast transmitters (via P2X receptors) in the nervous system, but also as neuromodulators (via P2Y receptors). Hence, nucleotides are as universal transmitters as, for instance, acetylcholine, glutamate, or Îł-aminobutyric acid
SO(d,1)-invariant Yang-Baxter operators and the dS/CFT correspondence
We propose a model for the dS/CFT correspondence. The model is constructed in terms of a âYangâBaxter operatorâ R for unitary representations of the de Sitter group SO(d,1) . This R-operator is shown to satisfy the YangâBaxter equation, unitarity, as well as certain analyticity relations, including in particular a crossing symmetry. With the aid of this operator we construct: (a) a chiral (light-ray) conformal quantum field theory whose internal degrees of freedom transform under the given unitary representation of SO(d,1) . By analogy with the O(N) non-linear sigma model, this chiral CFT can be viewed as propagating in a de Sitter spacetime. (b) A (non-unitary) Euclidean conformal quantum field theory on Rdâ1 , where SO(d, 1) now acts by conformal transformations in (Euclidean) spacetime. These two theories can be viewed as dual to each other if we interpret Rdâ1 as conformal infinity of de Sitter spacetime. In the last couple of years, a lot of research has been done about the effects of light pollution. The interest in light pollution has been growing in many fields of science, extending from the traditional field of astronomy to atmospheric physics, environmental sciences, natural sciences and human sciences. Better insight in light pollution is likely to contribute to design and operation of Facility Management (FM) based on evidence. According to Cinzano, Falchi, & Elvidge (2001), the Netherlands is one of the countries with the highest amount of light pollution, just as the United States. A sample of students in the Netherlands and the United States has been taken to explore differences and similarities between the two countries
