Concluding remarks on QCD-N'02 Workshop at Ferrara
A summary is given of some important developments in QCD studies of the
nucleon as presented at this workshop. Based on these developments some
expectations for the short- and long-term future of the field are sketched.
Taken together, the summary of the workshop and the future perspectives result
in a {\sl Road Map} for experimental studies of the QCD structure of the
nucleon. The Road Map includes as a long-term goal the construction of new
lepton-hadron scattering facilities both in Europe and the United States.Comment: 10 pages, no figures, contribution to the proceedings of European

Final State Charge Exchange Interactions in the Reaction
The reaction is analyzed in a model which explicitly includes
final state interactions due to the coupling of the proton and neutron emission
channels. We find that the effects of the final state interactions due to
charge exchange reactions are important to get a good description of the
symmetry properties of the recently measured Mainz spectral functions. We
discuss the possible role the off-shell effects may play for the correct
interpretation of spectral functions at large positive missing momenta.Comment: 9 pages Revtex, 4 figure
The Transparency of 12C for Protons
Existing cross-section data for 1p-shell knockout in the reaction 12C(e,e'p)
- as obtained under different kinematic conditions - are shown to be mutually
consistent, apart from a recent measurement performed in Mainz. New data have
been collected at the Amsterdam Pulse Stretcher that confirm the normalization
of the older measurements. An analysis of the world's 12C(e,e'p) data has
yielded precise values of the spectroscopic factor for 1p-shell and 1s-shell
knockout from 12C. These values have been used to evaluate the transparency of
the 12C nucleus for 1p-shell and 1s-shell protons separately on the basis of
recent high-energy 12C(e,e'p) data taken at a four-momentum transfer squared of
1.1 GeV/c^2. As the resulting average value of the nuclear transparency,
0.81(0.04), is considerably higher than the value obtained from previous
analyses and theoretical estimates, the high Q^2 data were used instead for an
independent determination of the spectroscopic strength for 1p + 1s knockout.
Combining these results with the low Q^2 data the spectroscopic factors appear
to be momentum-transfer dependent. Possible explanations of these surprising
results in terms of reaction-mechanism effects or a possible breakdown of the
quasi-particle concept at high Q^2 are discussed as well.Comment: 11 pages 8 figure
Minor influence of humeral component size on torsional stiffness of the Souter-Strathclyde total elbow prosthesis
The use of Souter-Strathclyde total elbow prostheses is a well-studied replacement therapy for reconstruction of the elbow, but loosening of the humeral component is still of concern at long-term follow-up. In this study we looked at the effect of humeral component size and bone mineral density with respect to the bone size, torsional stiffness and torque to failure in cadaveric bones. Fourteen cadaveric humeri were available for testing purposes and four different humeral component size categories were used. First, we calculated the bone quality using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The torsional stiffness of the prosthetic humeri was measured during two mechanical tests: Firstly, the applied torque was recorded during a torsion fatigue test. The change of torsional stiffness between the tenth and last cycle was calculated. Secondly, a simple torsion test was performed and the torque to failure was recorded. No significant differences in outcome were seen between sizes of humeral components, even after correction for the bone size. Torsional stiffness and torque to failure were significantly correlated with bone mineral density and not with component size. In conclusion, bone quality seems to be a major eminent factor in the fixation of the humeral component in elbow replacement surgery
Restoration of Overlap Functions and Spectroscopic Factors in Nuclei
An asymptotic restoration procedure is applied for analyzing bound--state
overlap functions, separation energies and single--nucleon spectroscopic
factors by means of a model one--body density matrix emerging from the Jastrow
correlation method in its lowest order approximation for and
nuclei . Comparison is made with available experimental data and mean--field
and natural orbital representation results.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX style, to be published in Physical Review
Exclusive 16O(γ,π-p) reaction in the Δ resonance region
We report the first exclusive (γ,π-p) measurements on a complex nucleus. The 16O(γ,π-p) reaction was measured at pion laboratory angles of 64° and 120°. Coincident protons were detected over the quasifree angular correlation range using a vertical array of seven plastic scintillator detectors spanning ±33° about the scattering plane. The cross sections are compared to factorized distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations; these provide a good description of the backward angle data, but are in serious disagreement with the forward angle data

A retrospective analysis of bilateral fractures over sixteen years: localisation and variation in treatment of second hip fractures
The aim of this study was the evaluation of contralateral hip fractures after a previous hip fracture. For this retrospective analysis patients were selected from the database of the LUMC, a teaching hospital in the south-west of the Netherlands. We analyzed all patients with a second fracture of a hip between 1992 and 2007. The exclusion criteria were high impact trauma and patients with diseases or medication known to have a negative effect on bone metabolism. A total of 1,604 hip fractures were identified. The possible predictive factors for the second fracture and descriptive statistics related to surgery (Hb and HT before and after the operation, total amount of intra- and postoperative blood loss, type of osteosynthesis, complications, time of death after the last fracture, time between arrival in the hospital and operation and hospital stay for both fractures) were recorded. A total of 32Â second hip fractures were identified (2%) at a mean of 27.5 (SD 28.9) months after the initial hip fracture. The mean age at the first fracture was 77.2Â years (SD 11.7), and 27 of 32 patients were female. Of these 32 patients (64 bilateral hip fractures), 32 fractures were intracapsular (1 femoral neck, 31 subcapital) and 32 were extracapsular fractures (6 subtrochanteric, 26 transtrochanteric). Although 24 of the 32 patients had identical first and second hip fractures, only eight out of 32 hips were treated with the same implants. There was a significant difference in Singh index between both hips at the time of the first fracture. There was also a significant difference in Singh index between the hip which was not fractured compared with its subsequent index when it was broken. All other studied patient and fracture characteristics were not significantly different. In this population the percentage of second hip fractures was relatively low compared to other studies. The choice of implants in this study shows that implants were chosen randomly. Because there is a significant difference in the Singh index during first and second hip fracture, osteoporosis medication might help reduce the incidence of second hip fractures
