Low HDL Cholesterol, Smoking and IL-13 R130Q Polymorphism are Associated with Myocardial Infarction in Greek Cypriot Males. A Pilot Study

This study was carried out in Greek Cypriot males to identify risk factors that predispose to myocardial infarction (MI). Genetic and lipid risk factors were investigated for the first time in a Greek Cypriot male case-control study.Contrary to other studies, mean low density lipoprotein cholesterol did not differ between cases and controls. High density lipoprotein cholesterol on the other hand, although within normal range in cases and controls, was significantly higher in the control population. In agreement with many other studies, smoking was significantly more prevalent in cases compared with controls. In pooled cases and controls, smokers had a significantly lower HDL-C level compared with non-smokers. The frequency of the IL-13 R130Q homozygotes for the mutation (QQ), as well as the mutant allele were significantly higher in cases compared with controls. Genetic and physical mapping in the terminal region of human chromosome 1p

Markers which lie in 1p36 have been ordered by different physical mapping techniques. Somatic cell hybrids with chromosome 1 translocations were analysed by the polymerase chain reaction and Southern hybridization resulting in the assignment of markers with respect to the translocation breakpoints. Dual colour fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and single colour FISH allowed the accurate determination of the order of markers from 1pter to the centromere. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was also applied to study the physical relationship between loci in 1p36. Long range maps constructed around markers indicated that none of the loci analysed were physically linked. Variable methylation patterns were observed around the PGD locus in cell lines and peripheral white blood cell DNA. A Yeast artificial chromosome was isolated for one of these markers (p58) and will be an important nucleation point in YAC contig construction in the region. In addition this has been mapped by FISH experiments in a region commonly lost in tumours of neural crest origin and is a candidate gene whose inactivity contributes to these anomalies. Partial exon-intron organization was determined at the PGD locus accompanied by a detailed characterization of the 5' CpG island. Additional 5' PGD coding sequence has been isolated by PCR screening of a cDNA library, followed by direct sequencing of the PCR product. Genetic mapping studies facilitated by the CEPH pedigrees and data base have allowed a tentative location for the PGD locus in the map of chromosome 1. Segregation analysis of the D1F15S1 polymorphism in these pedigrees has led to its assignment at a location proximal to PND. The ACE gene and endurance performance during the South African Ironman triathlons

Transonic flows through axial, multi-stage, transcritical ORC turbines, are investigated by using a numerical solver including advanced multiparameter equations of state and a high-order discretization scheme. The working fluids in use are the refrigerants R134a and R245fa, classified as dense gases due to their complex molecules and relatively high molecular weight. Both inviscid and viscous numerical simulations are carried out to quantify the impact of dense gas effects and viscous effects on turbine performance. Both supercritical and subcritical inlet conditions are studied for the considered working fluids. In the former case, flow across the turbine is transcritical, since turbine output pressure is subcritical. Numerical results show that, due to dense gas effects characterizing the flow at supercritical inlet conditions, supercritical ORC turbines enable, for a given pressure ratio, a higher isentropic efficiency than subcritical turbines using the same working fluid. Moreover, for the selected operating conditions, R134a provides a better performance than R245fa.ADEME-PROJET SUROR
