Development and Characterization of Curcumin-Silver Nanoparticles as a Promising Formulation to Test on Human Pterygium-Derived Keratinocytes

Pterygium is a progressive disease of the human eye arising from sub-conjunctival tissue and extending onto the cornea. Due to its invasive growth, pterygium can reach the pupil compromising visual function. Currently available medical treatments have limited success in suppressing efficiently the disease. Previous studies have demonstrated that curcumin, polyphenol isolated from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, induces apoptosis of human pterygium fibroblasts in a dose- and time-dependent manner showing promising activity in the treatment of this ophthalmic disease. However, this molecule is not very soluble in water in either neutral or acidic pH and is only slightly more soluble in alkaline conditions, while its dissolving in organic solvents drastically reduces its potential use for biomedical applications. A nanoformulation of curcumin stabilized silver nanoparticles (Cur-AgNPs) seems an effective strategy to increase the bioavailability of curcumin without inducing toxic effects. In fact, silver nitrates have been used safely for the treatment of many ophthalmic conditions and diseases for a long time and the concentration of AgNPs in this formulation is quite low. The synthesis of this new compound was achieved through a modified Bettini's method adapted to improve the quality of the product intended for human use. Indeed, the pH of the reaction was changed to 9, the temperature of the reaction was increased from 90 °C to 100 °C and after the synthesis the Cur-AgNPs were dispersed in Borax buffer using a dialysis step to improve the biocompatibility of the formulation. This new compound will be able to deliver both components (curcumin and silver) at the same time to the affected tissue, representing an alternative and a more sophisticated strategy for the treatment of human pterygium. Further in vitro and in vivo assays will be required to validate this formulation

Factors influencing choice of chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC)

    Get PDF
Management of metastatic colorectal cancer requires a multimodal approach and must be performed by an experienced, multidisciplinary expert team. The optimal choice of the individual treatment modality, according to disease localization and extent, tumor biology, and patient clinical characteristics, will be one that can maintain quality of life and long-term survival, and even cure selected patients. This review is an overview of the different therapeutic approaches available in metastatic colorectal cancer, for the purpose of defining personalized therapeutic algorithms according to tumor biology and patient clinical features

The article discusses the results of a retrospective analysis of outpatient records of patients with gastritis and gastroduodenitis, who were treated for caries. The total number of the sample is 31 people, age 36-44 years: 10 patients - men, 21 patients - women. Bleeding gums and herpes simplex on the lip in the group of men in 50% and 30%; in the group of women in 72% and 45% of patients, halitosis (27%), dry mouth, ulcers. The combination of three or more dental diseases in the group of men in 30%, in the group of women in 86%. The value of CFR in men (9.9 ± 3.5), in women (12.2 ± 3.9), in the control groups (5, 6 ± 3.2) and (8.6 ± 6.2), respectively, significant differences between all groups, no. In the group of men with gastropathology, the proportion of teeth with caries prevails in the structure of CFR (53%), in women - filled (61.5%). The level of dental care in the groups of patients was 48% in men (insufficient), in the group of women - 67% (satisfactory). The results of the study indicate a more attentive attitude of women with gastropathology to the sanitation of the oral cavityВ статье обсуждаются результаты ретроспективного анализа амбулаторных карт пациентов с заболеваниями «гастрит» и «гастродуоденит», проходивших лечение по поводу кариеса.

English version The Authors discuss about a case of retroperitoneal mass, recently observed in their Institution. About the nature of the mass, by the imaging and clinical evolution, the Authors suppose a traumatic genesis: subcapsular renal hematoma, occourred 2 years before, broken and expanded in retroperitoneal space and then superficialized in the left lumbar region

Intrameatal aneurysm of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery

Aneurysms of the distal part of the anterior-inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) are rare, with an incidence of 0.1% to 0.5%. We report a 55-year-old woman suffering from a subarachnoid hemorrhage resulting from a ruptured intrameatal aneurysm of the AICA. A left retrosigmoid craniotomy was performed and the aneurysm was clipped without post-operative deficits. Follow-up angiography demonstrated exclusion of the aneurysm, confirming preservation of the distal AICA. We review the pertinent literature and discuss clinical presentation, radiological findings and surgical management of this patien
