    An Analysis of Procedures Used in the Formulation of School Board Policies in Cerro Gordo, Illinois

    The purpose of this field experience was to develop a comprehensive and viable school board policy manual for the Cerro Gordo CUSD #100 Board of Education. On August 12, 1976, the superintendent, being new to the school district, recommended to the board that it develop policies to guide the day-to-day operation of the schools. This task was assigned to the superintendent. Much time and effort were devoted to this project leading to the final approval of the school board policy in the late spring of 1980. The author of this school board policy manual used the existing policy manual of the Dwight schools for the format. This format breaks the policy manual into eleven parts or sections for easy identification and classification of materials. In all, the school board policy manuals of eight different Illinois schools were compiled and used for the development of the Cerro Gordo CUSD #100 Board of Education policy manual. Existing local policies derived from an antiquated local policy manual last revised in 1963, and the local school board official minutes since January 1, 1970, were incorporated into the new policy manual when possible. Research, writing of the rough draft, and the determination of policy entries into the new school board policy manual were discussed at some length for an understanding of the developmental process. Policies are unique to each school district for which they serve. Consequently, a policy covering a particular area in most cases needed to be rewritten for local use. The writing of a school board policy manual is a monumental undertaking. The author recommends that anyone assigned this task should solicit the aid of others in every area possible. To administer a school district and at the same time develop a school board policy manual is so demanding that a fair allocation of time for both is very difficult

    Impacts of flow releases on invertebrate drift and juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) diet on the Trinity River below Lewiston Dam

    Benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) drift, species composition and abundance are specific to local hydrologic and habitat conditions, which can restrict or enhance availability to salmonids as a food resource. Currently, a knowledge gap exists on the Trinity River (northern California) in how flow releases from Lewiston Dam potentially impact BMI drift and feeding opportunities for juvenile salmonids. Samples of BMIs from drift, benthos, and diets of juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were collected from two sites in the upper Trinity River February-April 2018, during stable flow conditions (~8 ) and two increased flow conditions peaking at ~50 . Chironomidae (Diptera) and Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) were dominant BMI taxa in the drift, benthos and diets. Although contributions to biomass were more even across BMI taxa in the drift, biomass consumed by fish was dominated by Chironomidae and Baetidae at both study sites. BMI taxonomic composition was more similar between benthic, drift and diet samples at the upstream study site below Lewiston Dam, whereas compositional similarities diverged during peak discharge conditions at the downstream study site.     A versatile high resolution objective for imaging quantum gases

    We present a high resolution objective lens made entirely from catalog singlets that has a numerical aperture of 0.36. It corrects for aberrations introduced by a glass window and has a long working distance of 35mm, making it suitable for imaging objects within a vacuum system. This offers simple high resolution imaging for many in the quantum gas community. The objective achieves a resolution of 1.3{\mu}m at the design wavelength of 780nm, and a diffraction-limited field of view of 360{\mu}m when imaging through a 5mm window. Images of a resolution target and a pinhole show quantitative agreement with the simulated lens performance. The objective is suitable for diffraction-limited imaging on the D2 line of all the alkalis by changing only the aperture diameter, retaining numerical apertures above 0.32. The design corrects for window thicknesses of up to 15mm if the singlet spacings are modified

    Reducing smoking in adolescents: cost-effectiveness results from the cluster randomized ASSIST (A Stop Smoking In Schools Trial)

    Introduction: School-based smoking prevention programmes can be effective, but evidence on cost-effectiveness is lacking. We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of a school-based “peer-led” intervention.<p></p> Methods: We evaluated the ASSIST (A Stop Smoking In Schools Trial) programme in a cluster randomized controlled trial. The ASSIST programme trained students to act as peer supporters during informal interactions to encourage their peers not to smoke. Fifty-nine secondary schools in England and Wales were randomized to receive the ASSIST programme or usual smoking education. Ten thousand seven hundred and thirty students aged 12–13 years attended participating schools. Previous work has demonstrated that the ASSIST programme achieved a 2.1% (95% CI = 0%–4.2%) reduction in smoking prevalence. We evaluated the public sector cost, prevalence of weekly smoking, and cost per additional student not smoking at 24 months.<p></p> Results: The ASSIST programme cost of £32 (95% CI = £29.70–£33.80) per student. The incremental cost per student not smoking at 2 years was £1,500 (95% CI = £669–£9,947). Students in intervention schools were less likely to believe that they would be a smoker at age 16 years (odds ratio [OR] = 0.80; 95% CI = 0.66–0.96).<p></p> Conclusions: A peer-led intervention reduced smoking among adolescents at a modest cost. The intervention is cost-effective under realistic assumptions regarding the extent to which reductions in adolescent smoking lead to lower smoking prevalence and/or earlier smoking cessation in adulthood. The annual cost of extending the intervention to Year 8 students in all U.K. schools would be in the region of £38 million and could result in 20,400 fewer adolescent smokers.<p></p&gt
