Caroline Pratt: Progressive Pedagogy In Statu Nascendi

This article explores two themes in the life of Caroline Pratt, founder of the Play School, later the City and Country School. These themes, central to Harriet Cuffaro’s values as a teacher and scholar, are Pratt’s early progressive pedagogy, developed during experimental shopwork between 1901 and 1908; and her theories on play and toys, developed while observing children play with her Do-With Toys and Unit Blocks between 1908 and 1914. Focusing on her early and previously unexplored writings, this article illustrates how Caroline Pratt developed a coherent theory of innovative progressive pedagogy

Comparison of wild and cultivated extracts of Cordyceps sinensis apoptotic potential

Cordyceps sinensis is a mushroom which contains the compound cordycepin (3’-deoxyadenosine), an analogue of adenosine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cordycepin has multipurpose pharmacological uses including purported anti-tumor effects. In the present study, cordycepin was extracted from the wild mushroom as well as from various commercially available cultivated extracts. Previous research in this lab has demonstrated that cultivated extracts contain less cordycepin than the wild mushroom. However, it is unclear if the decrease in cordycepin correlates with decreased activity. To measure anti-tumor activity, extracts were used to treat human breast cancer cells (MCF-7 cells). In other labs, cordycepin has been shown to induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death in MCF-7 cells. Activity was evaluated using light microscopy to observe cell morphology and DNA electrophoresis to discern DNA laddering, both of which should be hallmarks of apoptosis. Using these methods the anticipated outcome is to determine if there is a dose and time dependent manner to the cordycepin-induced cell death as well as differential effects across the various cordycepin supplements which may contain other active compounds. These hypotheses were supported by our data with a dose-dependent cell death and marked differential in apoptotic potential among the various types of cordycepin sources

The Tomb of Ptahemwia, 'Great Overseer of Cattle' and 'Overseer of the Treasury of the Ramesseum', at Saqqara

In early 1859, the French Egyptologist Théodule Devéria was in Egypt to assist Auguste Mariette—who had just been appointed as Director of Antiquities—with copying texts at a number of sites in Egypt. At Saqqara, Devéria photographed a doorway of the now-lost tomb of Ptahemwia, the early Nineteenth Dynasty Great Overseer of Cattle and Overseer of the Treasury of the Ramesseum. This article starts with a note on Mariette’s work at Saqqara and early photography in Egypt. Then, the architecture, iconography, and texts of the tomb’s doorway are analysed, followed by an updated list of objects pertaining to Ptahemwia. __Abstract__ ‘Ons immigratiebeleid is restrictief, rechtvaardig en gericht op integratie’, aldus een passage in het regeerakkoord Bruggen slaan (2012) van het huidige kabinet. Dit kabinet en de Tweede Kamer hebben sindsdien over de uitvoering van de zogenaamde ‘wortelingswet’ en de strafbaarstelling van illegaal verblijf van vreemdelingen gediscussieerd. Het wetsvoorstel is uiteindelijk niet aangenomen en dat is maar goed ook omdat de onbedoelde effecten van een strafbaarstelling naar mijn idee grote consequenties voor de ongedocumenteerden en voor de samenleving gehad zouden hebben

Crimmigratie en de morele economie van illegale vreemdelingen

In haar openbare les uit 2009 beschrijft Van der Leun het proces van ‘crimmigratie’, de samensmelting van strafrecht en migratiewetgeving, en gaat ze in op de vraag of dit proces zich ook in Nederland voordoet.1 Ze behandelt dit aan de hand van drie elementen: de aanpak van mensenhandel en mensensmokkel, de mogelijke strafbaarstelling illegaal verblijf, en de ongewenstverklaringen. Het aantal ongewenstverklaringen blijkt sinds 2000 fors te zijn toegenomen: van 750 personen naar 1750 personen in 2005 − en lijkt zich nu te stabiliseren rond 1500 personen. De strafrechtelijke aanpak van mensenhandel en mensensmokkel richt zich primair op de werkgevers, de mensensmokkelaars en de huisjesmelkers en niet zozeer op de vermeende slachtoffers. Ook was er in 2009 geen sprake van een kabinet dat illegaal verblijf op dat moment strafbaar wilde stellen. Integendeel, in het debat dat in die periode over strafbaarstelling van illegaal verblijf werd gevoerd, was de eindconclusie om hiervan verder af te zien vanuit de gedachte dat deze strafbaarstelling weinig zou toevoegen aan het palet van middelen dat de overheid al ter beschikking stond om illegaal verblijf te ontmoedigen en aan te pakken. Van der Leun concludeert dan ook dat als er al sprake is van samensmelting van het strafrecht en migratiewetgeving, het dan toch vooral om selectieve vormen gaat en stelt voorzichtig dat er ‘tekenen van crimmigratie zichtbaar zijn’. In deze bijdrage zal ik mij allereerst kort richten op het beantwoorden van de vraag of dit als gematigd getypeerde proces van crimmigratie inmiddels niet een stap verder is. In de tweede plaats zal ik de vraag beantwoorden wat de consequenties zijn van dit proces van crimmigratie voor het verblijf van illegale vreemdelingen in Nederland. Ik zal bij de beantwoording van deze laatste vraag vrijelijk putten uit Nederlands onderzoek dat sinds het midden van de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw is verricht onder illegale vreemdelingen. ..
