Nuclear thermal rocket workshop reference system Rover/NERVA
The Rover/NERVA engine system is to be used as a reference, against which each of the other concepts presented in the workshop will be compared. The following topics are reviewed: the operational characteristics of the nuclear thermal rocket (NTR); the accomplishments of the Rover/NERVA programs; and performance characteristics of the NERVA-type systems for both Mars and lunar mission applications. Also, the issues of ground testing, NTR safety, NASA's nuclear propulsion project plans, and NTR development cost estimates are briefly discussed
Method for analyzing radiation sensitivity of integrated circuits
A method for analyzing the radiation sensitivity of an integrated circuit is described to determine the components. The application of a narrow radiation beam to portions of the circuit is considered. The circuit is operated under normal bias conditions during the application of radiation in a dosage that is likely to cause malfunction of at least some transistors, while the circuit is monitored for failure of the irradiated transistor. When a radiation sensitive transistor is found, then the radiation beam is further narrowed and, using a fresh integrated circuit, a very narrow beam is applied to different parts of the transistor, such as its junctions, to locate the points of greatest sensitivity
Reverse Engineering the Yield Curve
Prices of riskfree bonds in any arbitrage-free environment are governed by a pricing kernel: given a kernel, we can compute prices of bonds of any maturity we like. We use observed prices of multi-period bonds to estimate, in a log-linear theoretical setting, the pricing kernel that gave rise to them. The high-order dynamics of our estimated kernel help to explain why first-order, one-factor models of the term structure have had difficulty reconciling the shape of the yield curve with the persistence of the short rate. We use the estimated kernel to provide a new perspective on Hansen-Jagannathan bounds, the price of risk, and the pricing of bond options and futures.
Using experiments and expert judgment to model catchability of Pacific rockfishes in trawl surveys, with application to bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis) off British Columbia
The time series of abundance indices for many groundfish
populations, as determined from trawl surveys, are often imprecise and short, causing stock assessment estimates
of abundance to be imprecise. To improve precision, prior probability distributions (priors) have been developed
for parameters in stock assessment models by using meta-analysis, expert judgment on catchability, and empirically based modeling. This article presents a synthetic approach for formulating priors for rockfish trawl survey catchability (qgross). A multivariate prior for qgross for different surveys is formulated by using 1) a correction factor for bias in estimating fish density between trawlable and untrawlable areas, 2) expert judgment on trawl net catchability, 3) observations from trawl survey experiments, and 4) data on the fraction of population
biomass in each of the areas surveyed. The method is illustrated by using bocaccio (Sebastes paucipinis) in British Columbia. Results indicate that expert judgment can be updated markedly by observing the catch-rate ratio from different trawl gears in the same areas. The marginal priors
for qgross are consistent with empirical estimates obtained by fitting a stock assessment model to the survey data under a noninformative prior for qgross. Despite high prior uncertainty (prior coefficients of variation ≥0.8) and high prior correlation between qgross, the prior for qgross still enhances the precision of key stock assessment

Human complement factor H
We isolated cDNA clones coding for the functionally important tryptic N-terminal38-
kDa fragment of human complement control protein factor H using polyclonal and
monoclonal antibodies to screen a human liver cDNA library cloned in a bacterial
expression vector, PEX-1. By testing the reactivity of antibodies specific for the
recombinant proteins produced by individual clones with proteolytic fragments of
serum H the exact position of these cDNA clones within H was mapped. One clone,
H-19, coding for the 38-kDa fragment of H was sequenced and found to code for 289
amino acids derived from the 38-kDa N-terminal fragment as well as for the first 108
amino acids belonging to the complementary 142-kDa tryptic fragment. The derived
protein sequence could be arranged in 6 highly homologous repeats of about 60 amino
acids each, the homology between the repeats being determined by the characteristic
position of cysteine, proline, glycine, tyrosine and tryptophane residues. The region
coding for the epitope recognized by one of our monoclonal antibodies was localized
by subcloning restriction fragments of H-19 into the expression plasmid and testing
for the expression of this epitope
Revolutionary Climatology: Rings of Saturn, Ringed by Red Lightning
Walter Benjamin’s concept of historical materialism is considered as a practice of media archaeology invented through literary montage and photo philosophy. The Arcades Project that facilitated this new research methodology involving a mobile archive. The main case involving architectural theory considers how Benjamin redeployed Sigfried Giedion and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy’s Building in France as a media environment, drawing upon its layout design, photo illustrations and textual systems. In terms of his urban writing, a reading of ‘A Berlin Chronicle’ considers how the diagram contributes to Benjamin’s archaeological methods, as a theory to generate site writing. Benjamin’s mode of media archaeology is then employed to map the arcades architecture onto the train stations and libraries in Berlin and Paris, sites that informed The Arcades Project. The final section assembles a set of citations as ‘Revolutionary Climatology’, thought-images as flashes of red lightning
