First Stars. II. Evolution with mass loss
The first stars are assumed to be predominantly massive. Although, due to the
low initial abundances of heavy elements the line-driven stellar winds are
supposed to be inefficient in the first stars, these stars may loose a
significant amount of their initial mass by other mechanisms.
In this work, we study the evolution with a prescribed mass loss rate of very
massive, galactic and pregalactic, Population III stars, with initial
metallicities and , respectively, and initial masses
100, 120, 150, 200, and 250 during the hydrogen and helium burning
phases.
The evolution of these stars depends on their initial mass, metallicity and
the mass loss rate. Low metallicity stars are hotter, compact and luminous, and
they are shifted to the blue upper part in the Hertzprung-Russell diagram. With
mass loss these stars provide an efficient mixing of nucleosynthetic products,
and depending on the He-core mass their final fate could be either
pair-instability supernovae or energetic hypernovae. These stars contributed to
the reionization of the universe and its enrichment with heavy elements, which

Intelligence within BAOR and NATO's Northern Army Group
During the Cold War the UK's principal military role was its commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) through the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR), together with wartime command of NATO's Northern Army Group. The possibility of a surprise attack by the numerically superior Warsaw Pact forces ensured that great importance was attached to intelligence, warning and rapid mobilisation. As yet we know very little about the intelligence dimension of BAOR and its interface with NATO allies. This article attempts to address these neglected issues, ending with the impact of the 1973 Yom Kippur War upon NATO thinking about warning and surprise in the mid-1970s. It concludes that the arrangements made by Whitehall for support to BAOR from national assets during crisis or transition to war were - at best - improbable. Accordingly, over the years, BAOR developed its own unique assets in the realm of both intelligence collection and special operations in order to prepare for the possible outbreak of conflict
The HIPASS Catalogue - II. Completeness, Reliability, and Parameter Accuracy
The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind extragalactic HI 21-cm
emission line survey covering the whole southern sky from declination -90 to
+25. The HIPASS catalogue (HICAT), containing 4315 HI-selected galaxies from
the region south of declination +2, is presented in Meyer et al. (2004a, Paper
I). This paper describes in detail the completeness and reliability of HICAT,
which are calculated from the recovery rate of synthetic sources and follow-up
observations, respectively. HICAT is found to be 99 per cent complete at a peak
flux of 84 mJy and an integrated flux of 9.4 Jy km/s. The overall reliability
is 95 per cent, but rises to 99 per cent for sources with peak fluxes >58 mJy
or integrated flux > 8.2 Jy km/s. Expressions are derived for the uncertainties
on the most important HICAT parameters: peak flux, integrated flux, velocity
width, and recessional velocity. The errors on HICAT parameters are dominated

The Northern HIPASS catalogue - Data presentation, completeness and reliability measures
The Northern HIPASS catalogue (NHICAT) is the northern extension of the
HIPASS catalogue, HICAT (Meyer et al. 2004). This extension adds the sky area
between the declination range of +2 deg < dec. < +25.5 deg to HICAT's
declination range of -90 deg < dec. < +2 deg. HIPASS is a blind HI survey using
the Parkes Radio Telescope covering 71% of the sky (including this northern
extension) and a heliocentric velocity range of -1,280 km/s to 12,700 km/s .
The entire Virgo Cluster region has been observed in the Northern HIPASS. The
galaxy catalogue, NHICAT, contains 1002 sources with v_hel > 300 km/s . Sources
with -300 km/s < v_hel < 300 km/s were excluded to avoid contamination by
Galactic emission. In total, the entire HIPASS survey has found 5317 galaxies
identified purely by their HI content. The full galaxy catalogue is

One step closer to understanding the role of bacteria in diabetic foot ulcers: characterising the microbiome of ulcers
Background:
The aim of this study was to characterise the microbiome of new and recurrent diabetic foot ulcers using 16S amplicon sequencing (16S AS), allowing the identification of a wider range of bacterial species that may be important in the development of chronicity in these debilitating wounds. Twenty patients not receiving antibiotics for the past three months were selected, with swabs taken from each individual for culture and 16S AS. DNA was isolated using a combination of bead beating and kit extraction. Samples were sequenced on the Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform.
Results:
Conventional laboratory culture showed positive growth from only 55 % of the patients, whereas 16S AS was positive for 75 % of the patients (41 unique genera, representing 82 different operational taxonomic units (OTU’s). S. aureus was isolated in 72 % of culture-positive samples, whereas the most commonly detected bacteria in all ulcers were Peptoniphilusspp., Anaerococcus spp. and Corynebacterium spp., with the addition of Staphylococcus spp. in new ulcers. The majority of OTU’s residing in both new and recurrent ulcers (over 67 %) were identified as facultative or strict anaerobic Gram-positive organisms. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed no difference in clustering between the two groups (new and recurrent ulcers).
Conclusions:
The abundance of anaerobic bacteria has important implications for treatment as it suggests that the microbiome of each ulcer “starts afresh” and that, although diverse, are not distinctly different from one another with respect to new or recurrent ulcers. Therefore, when considering antibiotic therapy the duration of current ulceration may be a more important consideration than a history of healed ulcer
Australian health care providers' views on opt-out HIV testing
Background: Opt-out HIV testing is a novel concept in Australia. In the opt-out approach, health care providers (HCPs) routinely test patients for HIV unless they explicitly decline or defer. Opt-out HIV testing is only performed with the patients' consent, but pre-test counselling is abbreviated. Australian national testing guidelines do not currently recommend opt-out HIV testing for the general population. Non-traditional approaches to HIV testing (such as opt-out) could identify HIV infections and facilitate earlier treatment, which is particularly important now that HIV is a chronic, manageable disease. Our aim was to explore HCPs' attitudes toward opt-out HIV testing in an Australian context, to further understanding of its acceptability and feasibility. Methods: In this qualitative study, we used purposeful sampling to recruit HCPs who were likely to have experience with HIV testing in Western Australia. We interviewed them using a semi-structured guide and used content analysis as per Graneheim to code the data. Codes were then merged into subcategories and finally themes that unified the underlying concepts. We refined these themes through discussion among the research team. Results: Twenty four HCPs participated. Eleven participants had a questioning attitude toward opt-out HIV testing, while eleven favoured the approach. The remaining two participants had more nuanced perspectives that incorporated some characteristics of the questioning and favouring attitudes. Participants' views about opt-out HIV testing largely fell into two contrasting themes: normalisation and routinisation versus exceptionalism; and a need for proof versus openness to new approaches. Conclusion: Most HCPs in this study had dichotomous attitudes toward opt-out HIV testing, reflecting contrasting analytical styles. While some HCPs viewed it favourably, with the perceived benefits outweighing the perceived costs, others preferred to have evidence of efficacy and cost-effectiveness
The First Stars
The first stars to form in the Universe -- the so-called Population III stars
-- bring an end to the cosmological Dark Ages, and exert an important influence
on the formation of subsequent generations of stars and on the assembly of the
first galaxies. Developing an understanding of how and when the first
Population III stars formed and what their properties were is an important goal
of modern astrophysical research. In this review, I discuss our current
understanding of the physical processes involved in the formation of Population
III stars. I show how we can identify the mass scale of the first dark matter
halos to host Population III star formation, and discuss how gas undergoes
gravitational collapse within these halos, eventually reaching protostellar
densities. I highlight some of the most important physical processes occurring
during this collapse, and indicate the areas where our current understanding
remains incomplete. Finally, I discuss in some detail the behaviour of the gas
after the formation of the first Population III protostar. I discuss both the
conventional picture, where the gas does not undergo further fragmentation and
the final stellar mass is set by the interplay between protostellar accretion
and protostellar feedback, and also the recently advanced picture in which the
gas does fragment and where dynamical interactions between fragments have an

Identifying the Age Cohort Responsible for Transmission in a Natural Outbreak of Bordetella bronchiseptica
Identifying the major routes of disease transmission and reservoirs of infection are needed to increase our understanding of disease dynamics and improve disease control. Despite this, transmission events are rarely observed directly. Here we had the unique opportunity to study natural transmission of Bordetella bronchiseptica – a directly transmitted respiratory pathogen with a wide mammalian host range, including sporadic infection of humans – within a commercial rabbitry to evaluate the relative effects of sex and age on the transmission dynamics therein. We did this by developing an a priori set of hypotheses outlining how natural B. bronchiseptica infections may be transmitted between rabbits. We discriminated between these hypotheses by using force-of-infection estimates coupled with random effects binomial regression analysis of B. bronchiseptica age-prevalence data from within our rabbit population. Force-of-infection analysis allowed us to quantify the apparent prevalence of B. bronchiseptica while correcting for age structure. To determine whether transmission is largely within social groups (in this case litter), or from an external group, we used random-effect binomial regression to evaluate the importance of social mixing in disease spread. Between these two approaches our results support young weanlings – as opposed to, for example, breeder or maternal cohorts – as the age cohort primarily responsible for B. bronchiseptica transmission. Thus age-prevalence data, which is relatively easy to gather in clinical or agricultural settings, can be used to evaluate contact patterns and infer the likely age-cohort responsible for transmission of directly transmitted infections. These insights shed light on the dynamics of disease spread and allow an assessment to be made of the best methods for effective long-term disease control
