Black habits of the heart : the American dream and the Black middle-class
Conversations with middle-class black males and females are analyzed in this study. The objective is to identify, and to better understand the life goals of these men and women, whose traditions and aspirations have been excluded from mainstream descriptions of American culture. Two hundred and five lives are probed. Public, private material, private nonmaterial, and private materialistic typologies are used to classify the voiced wishes. Ideas of freedom, equality and justice are also explored. Guided by Andrew Greeley's 'ethnogenesis,' the study proposes that, its respondents hold dual membership in culture, and subculture. Expressions of individualism and wants of economic success reflect association with the larger society, whereas concern with the good of the "in-group" suggests the presence of collectivism, a trait often associated with the African-American tradition.Sociolog
