    Evaluation of EREP techniques for geological mapping

    The author has identified the following significant results. Skylab photographs may be successfully utilized for preparing a reconnaissance geological map in the areas where no maps or semi-detailed maps exist. Large coverage of area and regional perspective from Skylab photographs can help better coordination in regional mapping. It is possible to delineate major structural trends and other features like mega-lineaments, geofractures, and faults, which have evaded their detection by conventional methods. The photointerpretability is better in areas dominated by sedimentary rocks. Rock units of smaller extent and having poor geomorphic expressions are difficult to map. Demarcation of quaternary river alluvium can be made with better precision and ease with the Skylab photographs. Stereoscopic viewing greatly helps in interpretation of area structures. Skylab photographs are not good for preparing geological maps larger than 1:270,000 scale

    Patterning of polar active filaments on a tense cylindrical membrane

    We study the dynamics and patterning of polar contractile filaments on the surface of a cylindrical cell using active hydrodynamic equations that incorporate couplings between curvature and filament orientation. Cables and rings spontaneously emerge as steady state configurations on the cylinder, and can be stationary or moving, helical or segments moving along helical trajectories. Contractility induces coalescence of proximal rings. We observe phase transitions in the steady state patterns upon changing cell diameter and make several testable predictions. Our results are relevant to the dynamics and patterning of a variety of active biopolymers in cylindrical cells.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, (Includes Supplementary information

    Optical Phonon Lineshapes and Transport in Metallic Carbon Nanotubes under High Bias Voltage

    We calculate the current-voltage characteristic of metallic nanotubes at high bias voltage showing that a bottleneck exists for short nanotubes in contrast to large ones. We attribute this to a redistribution of lower-lying acoustic phonons caused by phonon-phonon scattering with hot optical phonons. The current-voltage characteristic and the electron and phonon distribution functions are derived analytically, and serve to obtain in a self-contained way the frequency shift and line broadening of the zone center optical phonons due to the electron-phonon coupling at high bias. We obtain a positive frequency shift from the zero bias shift and no broadening of the optical phonon mode at very high voltages, in agreement with recent experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, minor changes, pusblished in PR

    For m,nNm,n\in\mathbb{N}, let fm,n(x)=[ψ(m)(x)]2+ψ(n)(x)f_{m,n}(x)=\bigr[\psi^{(m)}(x)\bigl]^2+\psi^{(n)}(x) on (0,)(0,\infty). In the present paper, we prove using two methods that, among all fm,n(x)f_{m,n}(x) for m,nNm,n\in\mathbb{N}, only f1,2(x)f_{1,2}(x) is nontrivially completely monotonic on (0,)(0,\infty). Accurately, the functions f1,2(x)f_{1,2}(x) and fm,2n1(x)f_{m,2n-1}(x) are completely monotonic on (0,)(0,\infty), but the functions fm,2n(x)f_{m,2n}(x) for (m,n)(1,1)(m,n)\ne(1,1) are not monotonic and does not keep the same sign on (0,)(0,\infty).Comment: 9 page
